Sports Today vs Sports Back Then. Are sports today exciting as they were back in the 90's? If not, which ones? Did the athletes care about the game more back then? I personally think athletes back then played for the game, not endorsement deals and money. Sure everybody wants money, but the athletes today just seem like they only care about that, and themselves. Some sports today just aren't as fun t0 watch anymore. Why though? Is it because they all want fame? Advertising? Think about some of the athletes in the 90's, tons of them were and still are recognized as the greatest athletes of our time. Michael Jordan, John Elway, Barry Sanders, Deon Sanders, Jerry Rice, Karl Malone, Reggie Miller, Shawn Kemp, Wayne Gretzky, John Daley, and so much more. What do you think? Were sports back then more exciting than sports today?

I completely agree with you, sports back in the 90s and even before that were a whole lot more fun to watch than the sports today. Back in the day you never had to worry about steroids or dog fights or anything like that, professional athletes, for the most part, kept their noses clean. That's not to say however that everyone did, but it was a whole lot better than it is today. Also, I think that a lot of the players today don't play for the same reasons players did back then. Athletes back then played because they loved the game, not because if they won the Super Bowl or the World Series they would get multi-million dollar endorsement deals and a new sneaker line. They played for pride, they played for glory, and they played for their TEAM. A lot of people now are out for themselves, trying to make as much money as they can no matter how many people they piss off and how many times they sell out. Again, not to say that all athletes today are like that. But you look at players like Alex Rodriquez, who has opted out of his HUGE multi-million dollar contract with the Yankees because he wants more money. I also think that because today's sports world is all about the money, that ahtletes have gotten softer and don't want to play as hard if they're not making the big bucks. Sports back in the day, in my mind, blows sports of today out of the water, plain and simple.

I believe sports are a lot more commercialized than they were in the past. I remember the NBA being a huge deal in the 90s. It was the BIG thing. Everyone wanted jerzees, loved Michael Jordan, and windbreaker hoodies with team names. Over the years the NBA has become less and less popular, some people watch but not half as much as before. I think people have been let down by many national sports teams because of the impure nature of professional sports. More and more sports figures are criminals, take performance enhancing drugs, and all they seem to care about is endorsements and contract negotiations. If you ask an older person about sports, I don't think the same feelings would be associated if you had asked about sports today.

The sports in the 90's were way more exciting to watch than sports today. The athletes of today seem to play for themselves, rather than playing for a team. All they care about is their individual performance and how much money they are making. Athletes make more money today than they ever have. In the older days of sports players played as a team. Even the greats like Michael Jordan and Walter Payton played as a team. They were more considerate of other players, and they tried to get everyone involved. This doesn't happen today. It is always about the big name players and how many shots they make or how many touchdowns they score. The players dont treat the fans as well as they used to too. It seems to me like they don't care if any of the average joe fans. The change in sports has brought about a less passionate fan. The fans don't even seem to love the game as much. Sports of today don't even compare to sports back then.

I agree that sports back then were way more exciting. I mean professional sports though. I don't even watch pro sports that often anymore, not like I used to. I enjoy college sports because the athletes are playing with their hearts. They play for keeps each game. I remember when I was younger and the Bulls had that stellar line-up. Everybody in my family would get together and watch the games. We would turn off the lights when they came out on the court like the team did. It was a better time for sports. Now people are completely consumed by the almighty dollar, and to be frank, it is sick.

From my perspective my only basis of comparison is a sport that I participate in, and that is pool I'm not really an observer but a player or participator, so for me that has not changed and I would encourage others to do the same. Why waste hours watching others live and play when you can live and play yourself. So for me it has not changed, whether it be the 90s or the current day.
I don't know. I don't watch sports, I only play them. I think that athletes cared about the game before the 90s. People didn't play for money, they played for the joy it gave them. This, however is only based on sports movies that I've seen, so I don't know how much of the truth has been manipulated. I've never enjoyed watching sports. I don't get the thrill, I actually have to be in the action. According to past generations, sports were more exciting because it wasn't about the fame. Athletes would play with their hearts in it, rather than their checkbook.

I don't really care about sports that much. If MJ was still with the bulls then I may sit down for a little bit to watch him play. Sports today though is as boring as ever. I don't think these star athletes care that much. Back then star athletes actually did care because they tried to make a statment or tried to make people see a different view point of something. These star athletes just care about getting their money and being rich. Some are even selfish.

Sports back then were much more exciting than they are today. The players back then difintely cared mroe about the game than they do today. Some players today do care about their sport, but as a whole, they can't match the intensity that athletes back then brought to the table. The NBA actually played defense, The NFL was all about the team and championships, and so was the MLB. Athletes today just want to go out for themselves and gain money. They are all about appearence and the public eye, but people like the ones you listed gained attention becuase they had love for the game. Many athletes don't seem like they love the game, they just love the spotlight.

Other than basketball I am not much of a sports fan. I was lucky enough to see Jordan's third to last game in D.C. and I had one of the best times in my life. However, I do remember as a kid, in the 90's, everyone seemed to be in to sports. Jersey's were always being sported and cards collected. It just doesn't seem to be the case anymore. The sports industry is nothing more than showbusiness.

I do think that they were better back then in oppose to now. Basket ball and possibly football. Now it seems like the athletes don't care about the game as much, almost as if it doesn't matter if they win or lose, they still get paid the same and I think that is the reason why they arnt fun to watch. With a lot of them there just isn't any heart in it anymore.

I think that sports in the 90's were much more exciting to watch than they are now. The one that i feel the most strongly about would be the NBA. When Michael Jordan left the NBA it seems like the young players came in and began playing more for the money and fame instead of the love of the game. Since that i have found myself getting annoyed watchin the nba because it seems like everyone is just jogging around. I dont feel that the nfl has changed much. There are the jackasses that are just out there to make money and run their mouth but i also feel there are still very many players that play for the love of the game rather than for just the money. I lately have found myself watching a lot more ncaa games because in college players arent getting paid. They are playing because they love playing the sport. They also know that they have to work hard to maintain their positions on the team. In many Professional sports player sign contracts that gaurentee them the money, whether they play hard or not.

I think that sports today are cool, but back in the day they were more exciting. Sports have so many rules these days. Athlets, most of them, care about money and fam and alot don't seem to care about the love for the game. Alot of them are on drugs and comitting crimes.
--Jill Reinhart (noon)
From what it seems, players now play more for the money than they do just for the love of the game. I think I know more athletes now from movies and advertisments then seeing them play. They kind of have it all. They get to play the game they know, get millions of dollars, and and have thousands of fans.
Lindsay Brooks
I really don't know on this. But I would probably say that now of days there are less people who play without money being their main reason. Then again, I don't sit down and watch sports unless it is a holiday and my family has it on.
Elizabeth Kerns (9:00)
I think sports today is way more exciting then sports was back in the 90's. Just look at the NBA, guys now are bigger , more versatile and faster than they were back then. Football is better now because you have the new revolution quarterbacks that run out of the pocket with same speed as the runningbacks. In todays society i feel that athletes have evolved into better atheletes than the past and sports today attracts way more money.

I'm not so sure that sports back then were more exciting than they are now. I think it was just that back then the athletes cared more about their sport, and weren't in it so much for the money or fame. I still think that sports are fun to watch, that is why people are still watching them. Sure there were a lot of great athletes in the 90's, but they aren't necessarily the greatest of all time. I still watch sports all the time and I know of a lot of people who are way more talented and athletic than past athletes. It is just getting out of hand how much these athletes are getting paid, and I think that is why some people are turned off by the sports. Not all athletes are all about the money though. Tim Duncan took less money in order for his team to get better players, and this kind of stuff often goes unnoticed. I think that as long as there are professional sports, people will still be watching.
Chris Bohnhoff (Noon)
I could see how you would think that most athletes aren't in it for the love of the game anymore. However, I don't think sports have gotten any less exciting. Athletes, skill-wise, are continually getting better and better. Lebron is not exactly boring to watch, Im' sorry. You know what is sad though, is all of the steriod usage going on these days. It makes you wonder how much skill and athleticism is actually being exurted from the players, and not these performance-enhancing drugs.
