Americans--Unhealthy or Not?

Are Americans unhealthy? How do we compare with other countries in how we eat, how much we eat, and how often we eat. If we are unhealthy, is it because we eat unhealthy foods or just too much food? Are Americans more dependent on fast food than other countries are? How does this affect obesity rates? Are Americans more inclined to have high cholesterol, and at higher risk for things such as heart disease. Are Americans more inclined to develop eating disorders in comparison to people of other countries? Bottom line--why are we so unhealthy?

Americans are totally unhealthy. We want extra portions of terrible food and we want to take the rest home w/us. I went to Germany and my friend was embarassed of me b/c I wanted a refill of soda, let alone a to-go box. I don't know if we are more dependant on fast food but I'm willing to believe that we are. It affects obesity rates b/c fast food is terrible artificial crap, and we think it's cute to get kids a happy meal. Eating disorders? I would say yes b/c we are the most narcissist country, and the laziest.

As American we are probably the most unhealthy people in the world. Not only do we eat unhealthy food, but we eat a lot of it. We could still eat a lot if we ate more vegetables, fruits, and grains. It's not how much we eat--it's how much unhealthy food we eat. This totally affects the obesity rate. Which has a domino affect on eating disorders. We eat so much, gain weight, and diet, which may end up for some as an eating disorder. Being overweight definitely results in higher cholesterol, heart disease, diabetes, etc. Americans probably are more dependant on fast food places more so than other countries. One of the big reasons this country is so unhealthy is we just don't take time to fix healthy foods--especially, if both parents are working.

Yes, Americans are unhealthy. Not only do we eat unhealthy food, but we have money with which we can spend on a lot of unhealthy food. It's a joint effort. We are constantly eating!

Birthday party: cake and ice cream with all the little handfuls of skittles, MnMs, Reese's...etc.
Company Get-together: punch, 5 different dishes for dinner plus all the side dishes.
Go out to see a movie: popcorn and sody pop.

We are probably one of the only countries who have a big problem with obesity. We depend entirely on fast food places.

I'll bet if everyone saved their money instead of going to fast food places all the time...they'd have a LOT of extra money at the end of the year. A $1.00 small fry every week adds up, my friend.

It would save us money and health problems. The people of America are just too greedy with everything.

I think it is a deep ingrained part of our culture. American's love a good deal and food is no exception. You go to a resturaunt and you get a plate that is 3 or 4 times what the serving size of the dish should be. "Super-size" is part of the American lexicon. I think that part of it is some of the troubles we went throught as a country some time ago. During the depression, if you got to eat meat once a week you were lucky. I think some time between the depression World War 2 and the booming econonmy of the 50's our culture compared sucess with being able to eat what you please. Combine that with the high fat, high salt processed foods that are the cheapest items on the shelves and it is no wonder that we are in this situation.

Americans are so unheatlhy! We eat way to much and way to much of bad stuff. The adult obesity rate has tripled just in the past twenty years! Altought genetics do play some role in our health, I think it is mostly due to our laziness and the convenience. It is easy and hassle-free to just drive up and get your food for less than five dollars. Can't beat that right? Think again. It starts to add up in both your pocket and in your butt! Not to mention the american children. Parents are just taking the easy way out and giving them whatever they want, and that usually results in pulling into McDonalds for a Happy Meal. And when they won't behave we bribe them with candy or pop. Just yesterday a lady I work with told me she let her kids have a peanut butter sandwich with marshmellows, m & m's and left over halloween candy just so they wouldn't run around! It's a serious problem! Americans are so unhealthy the end.

Yes, Americans are unhealthy. Almost three-fourths of adults are overweight while childhood obesity is up forty percent in just over ten years. Excessive weight increases your chances of developing diabetes, heart disease, strokes, and many types of cancer. Three hundred thousand Americans lose their lives each year from obesity. Our portion sizes are out of control. People seem to think that if they eat low-fat food they can eat more. I think we are unhealthy because we eat unhealthy foods and because we eat too much. We would be much healthier if we didn't eat a ton of food and go straight to the couch to watch TV afterward. We also need to exercise more frequently. Kids don't even get the same amount of exercise in school anymore. Passing these bad habits down to our children only creates a bigger problem.

Yes, i think we aer the most obese country in the world. In today's society; millions of Americans are dependent on fast food places to eat like Mcdonalds, Burger King, Wendys and Hardees. Other countries eat food from there resources like rice and mineral types of foodd but here in America we are addicted to fried foods, tons of deserts that has pounds of sugar in it and very few americans eat healthy. Thats why so many people suffer fro mheart problems and diabetes and high cholesterol and high boold pressure because of the foods we eat. So yes, we are unhealthy as americans because our big food resource are fattening and high sugar foods.

Child obesity--Child obesity is very much out of control in our society for the simple facts that parents pretty much give children whatever they want. It is like the children are running the parents lives. To prevent child obesity i think that there should be more outside activity going on. It seems like children these days are getting to be more and more lazy. With all the television and videogames and everything. It seems like kids now spend most of their time inside by themselves in front of the TV. I think it is a very good thing that P.E. is madatory in Illionis for all grade and high schoolers. I really don't think that strict diets are the answer I just think that many kids just need to get outside and play and have fun and get more exercise.
Adult obesity-- adults may find it easier to go out and get something fast and easy to eat for their family rather than take the time to cook a nutritious meal. That may lead to the reason of why many adults are unhealthy. It is just easier to grab something from McDonald's, Hardees, or Burger king on the go than it is to take the time to prepare a meal.

Americans are the most unhealthy people on the planet. 58 million American adults aged 20 through 74 are overweight and one in five children are overweight. Those are staggering numbers. Whenever you see pictures of people from other countires, you never see any fat people but when you see pictures of Americans, all you see is fat because thats what everyone is. America is becoming fatter and fatter every day. We eat a lot more than other countries. On every corner you see either a McDonalds or Burger King. At rush hour you see thirty cars in the drive up at Wendy's, all ordering food to take home to their families. All fast food is terrible for you. Americans go on a want basis rather than a need basis. Whenever we want something, we go out and get it. We may want food, but we aren't really hungry, if that makes sense. That is part of the reason we are unhealthy. We want something to eat quickly, so we go out and buy fast food. Americans are unhealthy because we both eat unhealthy foods and we eat too much food. Some poeple would fall apart if there were no fast food restauraunts around anymore. Fast food is all some people eat, and they would starve to death if they were all shut down. Because Americans are so dependent on fast food, this makes us develop high cholesterol and in turn puts us at risk for heart disease. Bottom line--Americans are unhealthy because they choose to be. They eat the wrong foods when they know they shouldn't. Eating healthy means you are healthy.

America is totally unhealthy. We are definitely a qualifier for the most unhealthy country ever! We are constantly eating butter, fried foods, sugars, and carbs on a daily basis. Even though grocery stores sell healthy fruits and vegetables, americans are always running to the swipe up the chips and other unhealthy snacks. The bad thing about this is that most of us have made it a lifestyle. Most families just consider their eating habits a normal way of living, and they don't think there is anything wrong with it. I understand that families splurge on unhealthy snacks every once in awhile, but I don't think it's okay to do on a daily basis. Americans would be so much more healhty if people would just watch what they eat. I'm a firm believer in the quote "you are what eat," and I think more people need to take that into perspective.

I really do think that America is unhealthy. I know when I am in a hurry, I'm not going to take my time to make something healthy, I'm going to get my butt over to McDonalds and get something off of the dollar menu. And I hate to admit it, but thats how alot of people are. I'm glad some people can realize how nasty McDonalds is, but I havent yet, and I don't know if I ever will. Lately, I've been being careful about what I get at fast food restaraunts, but I know alot of people arent. This definitely affect obesity rates. When Americans just eat whatever they are craving, and what they are craving is something unhealthy, which is normally the case, then I feel like they are going to be the ones taht suffer in the futur. They will probably get high cholesterol and have a higher risk for heart disease. We are unhealthy because we can be.

Americans are a mess with their health. Everyone is so busy so fast food is very dependent on. Also, people are just lazy. They don't want to exercise or do any physical activity. I think so many people eat unhealthy and they don't know what it does to their bodies. Watch "Supersize Me" and I promise your views on fast food will change. Obviously there is a problem in America since we have an obesity epidemic. Children are obese and stagnant. I think that Americans eat too much, too unhealthy, and too often. They eat whenever there is food in front of their face. Our health care will be on the rise for the rest of our lives unless we start becoming healthy. People will be getting heart disease and diabetes at young ages...and we will be paying for it. That will suck. Health care plans are already paying for less because people aren't controlling their health. This is one of the reasons that I am going into the health field. Obesity is out of control and it's embarrassing.

Yeah we're pretty unhealthy these days. A lot of people feel like it takes too much time out of their hectic schedule to make a homemade meal when they can just do fast-food. And, eating unhealthy is so much cheaper. Like let's take McDonald's for example--why pay $6 for a salad when you can get a double cheeseburger for $1? I think that's the reason why we're unhealthy honestly, just because it is so much easier and cheaper to be.

American's are so unhealthy today. Adult obesity rate has tripled in the last 20 years, and child obesity rate has doubled. Compared to other countries, we eat so much, and it's still not enough. We get super-sized everything and are still hungry. And not only is it that we just eat a lot, we are eating a lot of stuff that is bad for us. We depend on fast food because it is quick and easy. With our busy lives it is easy for us to just pull up to the drive thru and for less than 5 dollars and 5 minutes you have an incredibly unhealthy meal. With society becoming more lazy and turning more to fast food, they are going to be more inclined to having high cholesterol and heart disease, which they can pass on to their children. If we just take the time to make a healthy meal with our family I think that we can turn this trend around.

I think that American are unhealthy we eat to much and want to talk more home with. We as Americans have no portion control and food is so accessible to us pretty much every minute of the day. I know here at Parkland if i wanted to grab something to eat in between each class every day i very easily could.

In the Provena pamplet I get every once in awhile, they touched on the subject of how much larger our food has gotten. One example was that a muffin has gone from (guessing) 300 calories to 700 calories do to the increase in size. I believe that the restaurants are also providing way too large of portions. I know this is not possible, but I actually wish their was a restriction on proportion sizes restaurants can give out. This would also cut the cost of the food we order, which would be nice. I also agree that fast food has a huge effect on us, our kids, and our weight. I hate to eat fast food because of all the grease involved. I pretty much get sick everytime. We are also way too lazy. I don't know about Americans and the other countries, except I thought that we had the highest obesity rate.

Americans in general probably eat more food than any other country's citizens. We probably eat more unhealthy food, gain more weight, develop more eating disorders, and continue to slip down the slope of unhealthiness. We have been on a track of unhealthiness since we pioneered fast food. Most, if not all of the other countries of the world take pride in their food, and still set aside time regularly to prepare their meals. I think that if we, as Americans, began to take pride in our meals we would see more healthy foods entering our diets, and along with that comes a healthier lifestyle and better health and fitness.

Interesting post... Looks like solid state memory is really beginning to take off. Hopefully we'll start seeing decreasing solid-state drive prices in the near future. Five dollar 32 gig Micro SDs for your Nintendo DS flash card... imagine that!
