Body Image

Do people place too much emphasis on the way they look?
Are society's expectations too high?
Are the stars of today a good representation of what we should model ourselves after?
Do you feel the media is to blame-showing advertisements or commercials of thin models and built celebrities?
Should there be more supportive websites to encourage healthy body image?
Are there too many commercials and advertisments on weight loss programs and workout pills?
Who placed the so called requirements of what size is the perfect body image?
What do you think is the ideal body image? Why?

Why do people feel so self conscious about their bodies?
Are men not considered masculine if they are not built and are women not feminine if they are not thin?

I think people today put way too much emphasis on looks and body image. With celebrities like Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie to look perfect in every way, some people go to extreme lengths to try and achieve "the perfect body". Society, too, puts too high an emphasis on the way we look. Everyday hours of infomercials telling us how we can get rock hard abs, toned muscles, and the best ways to lose weight. With some of the websites out there, I'm surprised there aren't more people that look like twigs. There should be more supportive websites, magazines and books, radio spots, and advertisements informing people of how to live healthy, full lives. I think people have to realize that no one is going to have the perfect body, we are all human, and God made us all and we should be proud of what He gave us. The media tells us we have to look like these celebs and be skinny and buff and all that other stuff, but in truth I think the perfect body is a body that a person can be comfortable and proud in. Someone who is comfortable with their body is much more enticing than someone who is trying to reach that unreachable weight or figure. I think people are so self-concious about their weight and figures because they want to be accepted, and they think that by having the perfect body they will be accepted and well liked by everyone. We put way too much thought and worry into how we look instead of how we live.

It seems that people care about their image way to much. Ya sure it's great to have that perfect body and diserable physique, but sometimes people are so determined to get it they become stressful during the process. You can't just magically get the perfect body, you have to work for it. I think your self-confidence has alot to do with your body.I have friends that aren't even close to being big/overweight, but intend to be inconfident about themselves that they won't even take off thier shirts to swim, won't eat a big meal, work out excessivley to the point where it gets unhealthy. I've seen this kind of stuff first hand and it's outragous. I'm not being sexist or anything but it seems like most cases are with girls. They're always so worried about their image and what people think. Guys are also this way to. A big competition to see who has the tightest abs, biggest muscles, who lifts the most. I also have friends that are overweight, they know it and aren't inconfident at all, sure they wish they had a better body, but they except who they are and thats the way they are. If you look at celebs these days, it's just crazy to see how skinny they make themselves. Girls are making themselves wheigh under 100 lbs! You know it's unhealthy when people can see their face bones, ribs, and their arms are as skinny as their wrist. This is a very big problem with todays issues. Everyone just think and worry about how they look way to much I guess.

I think people place way too much emphasis in the way they look. They are too focused on chiseled abs and rock hard glutes. I think that hollywood is to blame. To many people have these supermodel looks. But they aren't natural. Most are airbrushed and all covered in makeup. It's not the way they really look. I think that the ideal body is my own. Almost like a Greek God, if he never worked out, and ate crap food, but still had a high metabolism. I don't think a guy has to be big to look good or a girl to be thin to be gorgeous.

I do believe that there is a huge concentration on looks in our culture (in America). Society's expectations are ridiculous and in reality no one will ever reach them. Some stars have good opinions and healthy messages to send. I don't believe the famous people are the problem it is the media that twists what they look like to be the main focus. I definitely believe that there should be more emphasis on your body's version of healthy and not a fantasy size/weight. There should be more places people can get access to the good information about healthy lifestyles. There are way to many commercials about the "easy way" to lose weight. None of the advertisements are effective in any way. Just because you can get skinny does not mean you are healthy. I remember seeing an ad for a drink that was basically watered down orange flavored water that you were supposed to drink for 6 weeks without eating!!That is the farthest thing from healthy!! The media gives us the "standard desirable figure" to follow. I believe the ideal body image would be someone who lives a healthy life and keeps realistic account of their body type. People should love their bodies and not fill them with crap, but don't obsess over weight. Being comfortable with yourself is the best thing. If you feel great then keep doing what you are doing. Happiness doesn't just come with one body type. Anyone can be happy with themself. Men are men even if they don't look like Lou Ferigno, believe it or not no girls I know like the way bodybuilders look. Men don't like women that whine about their weight all the time and women don't like men talking about lifting constantly either. .

Sex sells and fat is not "sexy"--this is the way society thinks, and whereas a lot of people are a little overweight, I believe that these people that control the way we think about ourselves are feeding us lies about what is healthy. We look at these people on t.v. and movies, hell even on the street and we want to be them. We want to be admired and wanted, and if we cant our self esteem gets lower and lower. Well news flash we are the way we are because of how we were made, and genes have determined quite a lot of how much a person weighs, and how easy it is for them to lose weight. Even for me it is hard to look at myself, and tell her that I love her just the way she is, but I work on it every day, and I believe that everyone should make an attempt to love themselves the way they are.

People nowadays feel that they have to look a certain wait or wear certain clothes to try to fit in that category. To be honest, the media is not to blame for, but its the people because they feel self conscious of the way they look and they want to change that. I think the ideal body image for anyone is wanting to look the way you want to look like regardless of what anyone else has to say. As long as you feel comfortable for the way you look then don't worry about what the media says. This is how God made us and you should appreciate what he has given us. People may try to talk behind their back saying someone ugly and stuff, but they shouldn't worry about it because they know they look good and is going to keep continuing to worry about themselves.

It's all about the image. Society's expectations are almost impossible to achieve. The media is to blame, and also photo-shop. Many times the people in magazines have been edited until they appear to be "perfect." As to celebrities, they shouldn't be the model. Celebrities have to be pretty and buff. And with the pay check that they're getting, it's not hard to do so. They have their personal chefs, trainers, etc. Most people are too busy or can't afford these luxuries. I think that there should be supportive websites to encourage healthy body image. When I mean "healthy" I mean not annorexic. Workout pills aren't to be trusted. There are so many commercials on weight loss, that it's hard to say which is legitimate. I don't know who placed the requirements, but I think that the media has a lot to do with it and also fashion. You don't see a lot of models who are fat. Plus size models are a recent development. The ideal body image should be healthy. We shouldn't have to be twigs. People are always going to feel self conscious because we can't help but compare ourselves with others. I'm not sure about the last question. I guess that the stereotype is that men are buff and women are thin.

With society the way it is today, people do place too much emphasis on the way they look. Society's expectations are too high, people just want to fell accpeted and they think a good body will automatically do that for them. We should not model ourselves after celebrities. Many people do, but I don't blame the media. I see the commercials all the time, but I'm happy with who I am so I feel no need to strive to look like them. People just need more self-confidence. Everybody has their opinion of what looks good, so there is no perfect body image. For me, a perfect body image is a confident one. It is all about presentation and if you're not comfortable with your body, how do you expect people to be comfortable with you. People feel self-conscious becuase no one is ever 100% happy with their appearance. There is always one thing that they see wrong with themselves. Men can still be considered masculine even if they aren't built and women can be big and feminine.

People do care about they way they look more than they should. But that is what our society has become. Thanks to people like celebrities men and woman are growing more and more unsatisfied with their natural bodies and think they need to change them. I think plastic surgery, (unless you were born physically impared or in an accident) is the dumbest thing anyone could do. We need to be happy with who we are, and we as people should stop judging others and makin them feel bad about themselves. No one picks there body or attributes, we are born the way we are born and if only we, as humans, would accept one and other unconditionaly, everyone might be a little happier.

I do think that people put too much emphasis on apperarence. As far as the normal person is concered yes the expectations are unrealistically high. In a way yes, but socity let it get that way, by accepting it. There should be more everything suporting healthy body images. I don't know if there are too many commercials since I really don't have time to watch anything but Gilmore Girls, and that is only on rare occasions. Socity placed the requirements, because if socity didn't accept it when runway models were under 100 lbs. it wouldn't be like that today. I think that being healthy is the ideal body image. It's better to be healthy, then malnourished. People are self conscious because they care too much about what others think. I consider everyone what they are. But then again I have a best friend who everyone thinks is gay, but he isn't. So that may of effected my opinion.

I definitely think that people are to focused on how they look. To some people, looking good is the first priority and everything else just comes second. Girls think they have to be skinny to look attractive, and guys believe that they have have muscles to look good. This is so stupid. I think everyone needs to stop worrying about their appearance so much! Don't get me wrong, everyone wants to feel attractive, but sometimes people go to far. Working out for hours a day, tanning seven days a week, and taking diet pills is just not a normal, healthy routine. I do think Hollywood has contributed to our ongoing problem of the "perfect body." People see celebrities and they want to look like them. I think everyone should just be accepted for the body type they have.

I believe that body image is an important thing in todays society. I think it is mostly caused by the media. Most all celebrities and advertisments are fit people that are dressed nicely. This leads to many people not eating enough and being very self-conscious. I think there are too many comercials on how to loose weight, either by medication, a diet, or excercise equipment. These also have an effect on how people feel they should look. I think that people should just live their life happy whether it be fat or fit.

It is really sad how people think that thin is the ideal body type and will judge people on the way they look. The only time being overweight should be an issue is when it starts to affect your health. I used to think it was the advertisments that should take the blame, but now I think that its more the people in the country that see them everyday and that watch the TV shows. I remember when people who watched "Cold Case" stopped watching because they did'nt like the way one of the women on the show wore her hair. I dont know who set the requirements for the perfect body but its pretty unrealistic. People with the perfect bodies sacrifice alot to look like that. I think that as long as your happy with what you look like it doesnt matter.

I feel that the media is to blame. I think many guys are atractive, even if they aren't really built and strong. Personally I feel that what people are on the inside is what really counts. I have a friend that thinks my ex boyfriend is ugly, but I think he's the "hottest" guy there is, because he treated me so well and he respected me and cared about what I thought, and didn't just care about my body or looks. I knew deep down inside he really loved me for my heart, as did I for him. Alot of people think that looks are the only thing that matters in a relationship. I hope that when I have a boyfriend, he's sees me and loves me for my heart and personality.

We are expected to look a certain way according to society on the "perfect image." If you are fat , short, and out of shape you are mocked. If a person don't feel socially excepted, they tend not to do well in life due to the fact of trying to live up to other peoples' expectations of their life and appearances. This is a terrible way to live. Do I have this perfect image? No. And probably never will, but I work with what I got and LEARNED how to be happy with me.

Yes we place too much emphasis on the way we look.
No way should we model ourselves after celebrities, maybe a few are worth really admiring.
The media is to blame and so are we, it's a cycle and we all take part in it.
web sites, oh yeah that's the way isn't it.
Ideal body type or image? My ideal body type would probably have to do with a comfort level. The general ideal body image is pretty slim despite what people like to spout off about "real women"
People have an ideal body image and are self conscious b/c we are a judgmental people who need ways to constantly validate ourselves in a society where all we do is for service.

It's being advertised everywhere that we all have to be toothpick skinny, but then again, it is sort of our fault for it getting that far cause there are so many people who are overweight. Most of us know that it isn't not what's on the outside that matters, but what's on the inside. Although this is true, it's hard not to feel good about yourself unless you do have a nice looking body. This said, I think that there is too much being published about it. I don't think just because someone is heavier means that they aren't as masculine or feminine, but I will admit that most people do look better without a lot of excess on them. I'm not trying to sound mean, cause I'm not a stick figure at all, but I'm just trying to state the truth.

I think that a lot of people take way too much emphasis on the way they look, but that is the way our country is now. Many people feel that if they don't look a certain way, they will be treated differently or won't have the same opportunities. I don't necessarily blame the media for this because they are just doing what sells, and that is good looking people. You can't blame the television commercials or anything like that, because they are just doing what they have to do to make their money. As long as people continue to hold good-looking individuals in such high regard, many others will strive to look just the same because they want to be adored in the same fashion.

Yes people put way too much emphasis on the way they look. Stars today are not good representation of what we should model ourselves after at all. Many of the stars today are struggling with their body image and it is not healthy.

Yes, most people do place too much emphasis on the way they look. Society is a monster when it comes to peoples appearances. We shouldn’t have to model ourselves after anybody; we should all be comfortable being ourselves. The media does tend to put more focus on stars with negative representations, drawing more attention to what we don’t want people to perceive as ideal. The people on TV are not perfect they are just made to look that way, but young people don’t realize that, so they basically kill themselves trying to achieve perfection. I commend the stars who strive to be positive role models. There should be more supportive anything to encourage healthy body image. The images on TV have the strongest influence, especially on younger people. Heavier people were once perceived as the ideal body type because it meant that they had money and were well fed. Nowadays, it seems that you’re perfect if you turn sideways and disappear. The ideal body image is the weight range considered to be healthy for you’re height. I don’t think it should matter how built you are because everybody is different.
