Prison Conditions

What do you think about the conditions that criminals endure at the prisons? Do you think that the conditions are too harsh or too lenient? I recently visited the Champaign County Jail on a class trip and saw that all the prisoners were free to do whatever they wanted. They were allowed to watch TV, play games and cards, work out and play basketball at any time. Some of these prisoners were convicted of rape, murder, and child molestation. Do you think that these criminals should be given the same treatment as other criminals that have committed lesser crimes? Should our tax money be going to a place that lets murderers and rapists watch
TV and play cards any time they feel like it?

they are as they should be, not alot you can do with so many pigs in one pen. i do think that given their crime, they should be divided up, prolly would knock out alot of prison crime and outbreaks.

O.K. no way to govern millions of people, there is no one answer to this question for me. I think that if you put people in a 5x9 cell all day w/nothing to do orlook at they will go crazy. Do I think that prisoners should be watching more t.v. than I do? No. Our tax $ has to go towards these sort of istitutions b/c what would you propose otherwise? Killing every criminal? It would be impossible for the prison system to fully generate it's own funds to run.

With everything prison "offers", I would not be surprised if people purposely commited crimes just so they could have a better life. They get three full course meals a day, television, everything. All the homeless people on the streets who have commited no crime are paying a much dearer price than the murderers and rapists in their so-called "horrible" prison cells.

In a way, everyone in prison is there for the same exact reason. They commited some sort of crime. Therefore none of them should be treated any differently than the others. The way they should be treated differently is how long they stay in prison, not what privileges they receive.

And what privileges should they receive? Not all the ones they are currently receiving. Meals, sure. A little TV every now and then, sure. Everything they have now, no. They shouldn't be getting so much freedom. They're in prison, by golly!

I really think the prison system is a little dumb. It is basicall like a resort where you get raped once in awhile. They shouldn't be allowed to enjoy the priveleges that they do. They should be locked up and placed in the worst conditions possible. Besides, if they lessened the number of ammenities the inmates get, then possibly John Q. Taxpayer wouldn't have to pay as much. Although, it is nice that Illinois uses the prisoners to make license plates, it really lowers the prices. But all in all, I think they need to get rid of some of the luxuries that prisoners get.

I really don't know a whole lot about ths situtation, but I always thought jail was supposed to be a place where you didn't want to go. So why all this time where they can sit around and play cards? Everybody is in there for committing some sort of crime, so why aren't they paying for it? I can definitely see why homeless people would rather be in jail. A crime is a crime. The only difference that should be given is the amount of time they serve.

I think that the things they "endure" as you say are somewhat good. I mean people are supossed to be serving a sentence for something they did that broke the law. They should be a little more strict. I mean i have known someone in jail and they would watch Tv and said the food was good and got treated very nicley. I mean people can treat others nicely in jail it is just that i think that people have too much freedom even while in jail. Depending on their crime should depend on what the get to do or not to do.

I think that most inmates have it made. I know a couple of people who have been in jail repeatedly. It seems like the second they get out, they go right back in. Why wouln't they though; they have a roof over their head, food to eat, entertainment, and it's all free. They don't have to do anything but lay around, read, and lift weights. I think repeat offenders prefer jail to the real world because in the real worldthey actually have to work to take care of themselves. The conditions in prison are supposed to be difficult, not glamorous and inviting like a all inclusive hotel. Criminals should not get the royal treatment while hard working honest individuals get crapped on. Criminals who have committed the most heinous crimes should get no privilages whatsoever. Our tax money could definately be put to much better use. I saw a proram about a warden who made his prisoners wear all pink clothing. The food they ate was moldy or rotten and they were not allowed such luxuries as Tv. When those prisoners got out of jail there was a good chance they wouln't return. Thatis how it should be. We are talking about prison not Disneyland. If you commit a crime, you should not get rewarded for it. Punishment is not supposed to be fun. Murderers and child molesters are already crazy, so they can just stay confined for the rest of their lives. If our tax dollars go toward anything in the prison system it should be to educate these people so they quit commiting crimes.

I think the prison conditions are like a little getaway for convicts. I mean some of their homelives weren't as good as what they're getting prison. It's ridiculous! I think that if someone committed a crime, that the rest of their life should be a living hell. I don't think watching their favorite show, and eating good food qualifies. They don't deserve to be treated well. Some of them took innocent peoples life, and I don't think they should be rewarded by receiving good treatment in prison. Something needs to change, or people just need to stop committing crimes.

i disagree with the fact that prisoners get to watch tv and pretty much do what ever they want. You do the crime you should do the time. That shouldnt be time watching television or working out. Look them in a 5X9 cell and let them go a little crazy. But let them think about why they are in there and maybe they will feel some remorse.

Well my uncle went to jail and he complained the whole time about the conditions, and I really didn't care. If you committ a crime, you need to man up and deal with the consequences. I have never been inside a jail, so I really dont know what they are like. But the jailors should not be treated like freaking royalty. Yea, my uncle didnt committ a huge crime, but it was a crime, so he should have to pay. I really hate the fact that they can lift weights in jail because its just making them stronger and I dont know i just dont feel comfortable knowing they are going to come out of jail stronger than they were when they entered. I do NOT think that murderes and rapists and extreme convicts like these should be able to do whatever they want in jail. Really, no one should. I don't care how harsh their crime was. Why should we let them do whatever they want when they are breaking the law? What kind of example does that give them? seriously! As i keep talking about this subject the more mad i get. They shouldnt enjoy their time in jail. THey shouldnt be able to do what they want because they shouldnt want to ever come back.

I think that the prison conditions are ridiculous these days. They are given too many good things that they honestly don't deserve. Sometimes I feel like they're so good that people will commit a crime, just so they can live a better life and be put in prison--that's sad. They aren't getting the treatment that they should be. The only downfall now to being in prison, is what, not being able to go other places? But, who knows, maybe in a couple months they'll start giving them field trips. If I committed a crime and got put in prison, but was still able to do the majority of the things that i did at home, i would be like hell ya this is sweet.

Criminals don't really endure anything. They are able to do what they want except for leave. I believe that jail conditions are too lenient. Jail has become almost like a camp. Free food, games, and lots of "friends." Criminals shouldn't be treated like campers. People in jail should be punished, not protected. The luxury that prisoners receive is a crime in itself. Jail has become a safe haven. They get the luxuries that law abiding citizens receive but don't have to worry about paying for anything. I think that life outside of jail has become more punishing than that of a prisoner's.

I think prisons shouldn't allow criminals to do as they way all day. They are in prison because they did something horrible. By allowing them to play video games and cards, it's kind of a reward, which doesn't make sense. I think there should be some kind of activity so they aren't locked up in a cell all day, but it should be structured. I also think it's ridiculous how some people in jail get released if the jail gets overcrowded. What in the world? Ship them to a different jail, don't set them free.

I don't know much from personal experience of the conditions inside except that prisons are overcrowded these days. I disagree with TV being allowed in prison. Prisoners could keep themselves busy with books and card playing just fine. I believe there should be a limited amount of free time also. I agree with others that prison should be the last place a person wants to spend time.

It all depends on the prison. Some prisons are stricter than others. The prisons that are too lenient should probably tighten up a little bit, but it doesnt really matter as long as the inmates are shielded from society. The inmates that have commited the hannis crimes such as rape and murder should be on lock down on all times. The inmates that are in for the so called "petty crimes" should be allowed to watch tv and play all the games they want. As far as im concerned the prison conditions should be based on what kind of inmates you are holding. If they are killers and rapists then lock them down; if they are minor crime committers let them do as they please, while still keeping a close eye on them.

I think that the prison conditions are too lenient on some prisoners. Like when you say that you saw the prisoners playing cards and etc. whenever they want, I don't believe that it is right. I think that based on the crime they committed, is how they should be split up into different places. I don't agree with our tax money going to places like this, but if it gets better then I would agree with giving our tax dollars to it.

I think that prisoners do get to many activities that there not there for. They could of did all of those things on the outside, but they chose to commit crimes and get put into prison. They are there to serve hard time for the punishment and thats exactly what they should be doing. It's way to lenient. I watched on some rison television show where the prisoners were allowed to have there won weightlifting competition. To me thats ridiculous, they could of done all of these things on the outside. These guys lost all of these priveleges on the outisde and they give it right back to them on the inside. All prisoners should be treated th e same, no more no less, if you can't do the time then don't commit the crime.

I believe that prisons should be used for what they were created for. We should be spending our tax money on making prisoners somewhat responsible citizens when they get out. A prisoner's day should consist of education, social rehabilitation, and hard labor. If the prisoner should refuse to adhere to the program, the prisoner should be forced to do hard labor 18 hours a day with no other activities besides sleep. Sound harsh? That is a military punishment that thousands of soldiers a year go through for minor offenses (like showing up late for formation repeatedly). So yes, I think that prison conditions are way too lenient. Prisoners should be motivated to stay out of jail. But they also need to be taught skills so that they can make a living outside of crime. If we could spend our tax money on programs that are actually sucessful in rehabilitating prisoners, we might not have such a prison overcrowding problem.

I mean, I'm not sure exactly what goes on in jails, but I do think that in they are prisoners, then they should work all day. Not be able to just lay around and hang out as if they're not in jail. They commited a crime, they should put some work into it.

As far as I know, there are few harsh conditions in prisons and prisons are far too lenient. I think that criminals that have committed harsh crimes such as murder and rape need to be restricted in any activities that they do. I don’t think that our tax money is being used in a way that anyone wants but whether we like it or not that’s where it’s going to keep going. All that we can do is hope that people who don’t deserve it won’t receive any kind of special treatment in jail.

I beleive that the prison conditions are harsh enough as is. Although the inmates may be able to play basketball and cards as long as they are not our roaming the streets then thats fine with me. I'm sure there is a handful of inmates that don't deserve any priveleges whatsoever but for the criminials in their with lesser charges to take basketball and what not away from them would be unfair. I mean there confined to a little area, barely get to go outside, can't hang out with any woman, and eat horrible food day in and day out. So overall I think the prison conditions are suited well for these individuals. Also most the time they make up for using our tax dollars by going out and doing community service on the roads and what have you.
