Should the legal drinking age be lowered?

Do you think the legal alcohol consumption age of 21 is right or should it be lowered to 18 or 19? Why? Do you think the penalty for drinking underage is too harsh or is it too lenient? Have you ever drank illegaly underage? Why did you do it or why haven't you done it? If so do you really think people that are 18 or 19 can't handle the resposibily of drinking responsibly? Why?

I personally believe that the legal drinking age should be reduced to 18. If you can go fight for your country I think you should be able to buy a beer. I understand that some people may think that kids under 21 aren't responsible enough to handle alcohol, but I think that most of my friends that drink are pretty responsible about it. I myself do drink, even though I'm underage, but not to get drunk by any means. Unfortunately I think most people who drink do it because it's what everyone does at that age. I drink occasionally when we're hanging out with friends and want to just enjoy ourselves. I do think that people my age can in fact handle themselves when they drink. Most of us know our limits and I know that whenever anyone has had too much everyone takes care of them and makes sure they are OK.

To be honest with you it really would't matter because everyone drinks any damn way. So, in reality, more younger kids would start drinking. For one, I don't really care because I don't drink. Most people drink just get to get drunk which is dumb as hell. Another reason why I don't drink is because I am not 21 yet. When I do turn 21 though I will drink, but only on certain occasions. Such as: on a wedding reception or something. People drink so they can look cool and tough and think they are mature enough to handle. 5 minutes later they are in the bathroom throwing up the 8 shots of patron they just had. So, in the end, I don't really care.

I think the drinking age limit is set at a good age. I believe this because now and days younger people are pretty much raising themselves, due to the infestation of parents on drugs. Therefore these generation of teenagers have no sense of respect for themselves not to mention others. They are not responsible enough to drink. Alcohol is mind altering and if a person don't have a mind to began with, the streets are prone to more drunk drivers and deaths. Insurance companies are making a bundle for young drivers becuase they know young people are prone to accidents. On the other hand like Jarret said "If a 18 year old can go fight for our country, why can't he/she purchase a beer?" I feel they should be able due to the fact the military teaches you respect for yourself and others than,YES buy a beer.

Okay i don't think that the age needs to be lowered. People drink underage, so why does it really matter. Wow then you could go to bars and get lit in the public. You can do that underage, and people do despite the age limit on drinking. People my age drink for one reason, they are bored, wanna have a good time, and want to get rip roaring drunk to blow off a little steam. I have had a cold brew once or twice, and I didn't get out of hand. I think that is an age that it could be lowered to, mayybe 18, but really you could raise it to 30 and everybody in between would still do it. People just need to handle themselves and get crazy when they drink, but they do. They get into fights or drive home.

Well I don't really think it matters Ive met plenty of 21 year old that are just as irresponsible as a 18 year old. They have got to understand that it is not age that makes people irresponsible it is the alcohol. But I can also see were they are coming from in the since that 18 year olds have only had their license
for two years its hard to say one way or another. Although I did drink a lot more before I was 21 so its really kind of a toss up.

I think the drinking age should be lowered. This would make my life a lot easier. It is a pain trying to buy alcohol now. The age should be 18; if you're old enough to vote then you should be old enough to drink a beer. People can drink responsibly underage. A lot of people drink underage and behave quite well with it. There are instances when they don't, but everyone over 21 doesn't always behave when they drink. Lowering the drinking age would cause a lot of people to stop breaking the law. Regardless of whether people are 21 or not, they are going to drink if they want too. So why not just lower the age to 18?

I really don't think that the drinking age should be changed. People are going to drink underage even if the drinking age is changed. I don't really think that it's that wrong for underaged people to drink every once in a while, but people get so out of control. I don't know why people can't just drink and be responsable about it.

I feel having the drinking age at 21 is a good idea. Being 20 years old and drinking since i was 14 i now understand why. For some reason or another when people are younger their tolerance is a lot less and they can not handle themselves. When a big group of highschoolers gets together it is the making of a disaster. On the other hand they might as well change the age to 18 because everyone does it. If alcohol were more acceptable like in Europe when they can drink at whatever age they want then its not such a thrill. I think a lot of the kids start off liking it because only a select few at first can raid their dads liquor cabinet and it sets them apart from there classmates. If your not getting drunk at a high school party then your just not cool. Or atleast thats what society says. Now that i hang out with mostly age legal people its not that big of a deal to get drunk and i sure as hell dont get as plastered as i used to.

I used to think that the drinking age should be lowered, but now im not so sure. Yes, when you are 18 you are an adult and can go and fight in the war and buy cigarettes. But I feel the older I get, the more mature I get and would be able to handle my drinking better. I do drink even though i am not 21, but i really feel that a drinking age really isnt going to stop anyone from getting their hands on alcohol. I've also have had friends that have gotten drinking tickets and after they paid them, they basically vanish of your record, thay are like parking tickets. So to me, if your going to drink underage and do it responsibly, then cool, whatever. But I think people can wait to BUY themselves beer until they are 21, becasue it hant really stopped anyone from getting it.

well. .I believe that there is a line that should be drawn towards responsiblity in our country. We can drive/drop out of school at 16, we can have sex/move out at 17, we can go to war and vote at 18, but why is it that we have to wait until 21 to drink legally??I think that is strange don't you? We can be counted as responsible citizens and our country's future can be put in our hands, but we can't have an alcoholice beverage?!! I don't think the penalty for underage drinking is lenient. You can get in all kinds of trouble from drinking underage! You can get your license taken away, a drinking ticket of $300, on probation, a DUI, and you can get taken to jail for minor consumption and go to court. I have drank underage, but I have never gotten drunk. I have been breathalized at parties(NOT FUN)! I drank because I was in the mood to drink. I have never drank because others wanted me to. It was just a personal choice to drink on occasions that I felt were appropriate. I believe and 18 or 19 year old can handle the responsability just like a 21 year old. I have friends ranging from 13 to 25 and I have 17 year old friends that conduct more responsibly than the 20-25 year olds! It really comes down to how mature the people with the alcohol are and if they are drinking with people that can be trusted.

I believe there are just as many 21 year olds that are unresponsable with drinking as there are 18 year olds out there. Lowering the age limit would not have as much of an impact on drunk driving and people who do drink because if you want alcohol you can get it. You just have to know someone or pay a little extra for it.

I don't think the drinking age should be changed at all. Everyone knows that people drink illegally and that cannnot be changed. I am sure that 18 year olds can indeed handle their alchohol but just look at how young people start drinking when the age is set at 21. If the drinking age is lowered to 18, an age that high schoolers are, then the age that young people feel that it's okay to drink will become younger and younger.

The drinking age should not be lowered to 18, 19, or even 20. Right now we still have the drinking age people not understanding the out come of their actions while drinking. I also don't think that it is ok for high schoolers to be drinking. If someone wants to go out and party in college, that is their own money going down the drain. I know that 18 is only three years from 21 and that men do not mature as fast as some women. I just think that there will be even more stupid acts done if we lower the drinking age.

I think underage drinking is a big problem in our society.I think kids drink now because they think it's cool and they don't want to "not fit in", especially in the college scene. I don't think that changing the drinking age would make any difference because kids will drink if they want. A big problem is that the police don't enforce the law. They may bust a party, but they never seem to do anything about it because the same thing happens the next night. A lot of kids that are partying don't handle themselves well. They get drunk and go crazy because they don't really know what they are doing. The legal drinking age is 21 for a reason. By the time you are that old, you are more mature and can most likely handle yourself better. I think kids should wait until they are 21, but I don't think that will ever happen. I agree that some people are more mature than others, but what about those who aren't?

I do think that it should be lowered. It won't really change anything other than it being legal. Those who do drink at 18, will still and those who don't probally will continue not to. I guess that the whole hare or lenient thing depends on what town your in. As long as the person isn't driving I think that they should just get a ticket or a fine if the person is being like obnoxious, otherwise they should be left alone. I have drank underage. The first time was because the group that I was with ran out of water, but had beer. Other than that first time, well I had already done it once so why not again. I personally think that if you are a resonsible person to begin with you will drink responsibly.

No way! There are enough alcoholics in the world without encouraging more drinking! Kids should be kids as long as they can. You will be a grown up for a long time...enjoy your youth sober!

I don't think the legal drinking age should be lowered. Teenagers are going to drink either way. Even though I am underage I do drink. Every once in a while I will have a drink, but not all time.

This is a really tough subject. I drink and I'm underage. Everyone that I know drinks and they are underage. I've seen kids that are very irresponsible that drink when they are underage, this makes me glad when they age is 21. Even though they drink it's very tough for them to get alcohol. Although it's sooo easy to get alcohol. That's the thing, loads of people do it when they are underage, so why shouldn't the age be 18 or 19? If you're 18 or 19 and legal to kill a person in war for our government, I think you should be able to have a drink legally. When you're in high school and college, there is a huge difference on how easy getting alcohol is. High school it was pretty easy, but there were nights when people couldn't get it so you'd spend the night sober instead of drunk. In college, getting alcohol isn't easy- it's very easy. Our nation is pretty messed up with age limit thing I think. I do agree that the drinking age should be 21, because by that time, you're a muture grown up person and are more responsible with your decisions when drinking than you would be at 18.

If we were a little more relaxed in this country I don't think we'd have all these problems w/kids "country cruisen" But I think it's to late to go back now. I think drinking age should be 16 or 18. You probably assume that I'm a drinker but I'm not. I actually came from a long line of alcoholics and kind of loathed alcohol for a long time. I think that there would be less of a problem if we weren't so uptight in this country about alcohol. What did you do when your parents told you not to touch something and then they left the room? People are always going to abuse substances b/c life is depressing. Maybe if we focused more on why that is or how to fix that, we would drink less. Yes I drank underage, but not a lot. I did it b/c everyone else made it seem like so much fun, and some times it is. I don't even know what the penalty is for underage drinking but I bet it's not too bad, probably not bad enough to stop those kids from getting a DUI.

I really don't see the point of lowering the drinking age. I feel like if it was changed to 18 then even younger kids would start drinking. And, I really don't even see the need to. Why did that even come up in the first place? Kind of random. But yeah, I drink and I'm under 21. I don't do it to look cool and be a rebel. I'd like to say I'm responsible about it but I've made some bad decisions-hey, it happens. Drinking is getting out of control though. But I really don't know a way to change that. Kids are kids--they're rebellious.

I think that the legal drinking age is fine where its at because if it was lowered to 18 or something like that, then teens from about 14-17 would still be drinking and the problem that we have now would still be there. As long as there is an age limit, people younger than that limit will still be breaking the law. The best thing to do would to get rid of the age limit all together. If there was no limit, kids wouldn't drink as much at one time, because they don't have to drink to get drunk. If you know that there is a possibility of getting caught and being in trouble, then you usually try to make the most of what you're doing, such as getting really drunk. So as long as there is a legal limit, kids will still be breaking the law by drinking underage.

Why have it reduced when people are drinking underaged anyway? No, I think it should stay at 21. I think that going harsher with the punishment wouldn't hurt any. No, I haven't ever drank before. I haven't done it because I see what it does to people and I like to stay in control of myself. I even had a cousin kill himself when he was drunk. What it comes down to is how mature you really are. Yeah, some 18 year olds are more mature than 21 year olds, but why drink? Honestly, what is the point of it?

I don't know the penalty for underage drinking. I struggle with lowering the age to 18, but if the military is willing to take you at 18 to possibly kill someone, you must be responsible enough to drink. People who drink irresponsibly seem to be at every age. Maybe we can find a better way to reach teens on drinking responsibly.

i think that it should be lowered to 18. That is what it is in foreign countries such as italy and they dont have as many drinking problems as America does. I think the underage drinking penalty is too harsh. I have drank and i honestly dont think me waiting till i am 21 to drink will make a difference. If you know what your limits are and dont drive drunk then it isnt a problem.

I think it would be very stupid and irresponsible to lower the legal drinking age. Too many kids already drink even though it’s illegal. If the age were to be lowered it would only create more problems. There are enough people risking lives by drinking and driving. I have had my fair share of underage drinking, and I can remember some of the bad choices I made while under the influence. I did it because my friends were doing it.The legal drinking age should remain at twenty-one
