Euthanasia, legal or illegal?

Should physician assisted suicide continue to be illegal? Physician assisted suicide, also known as Euthanasia, is illegal in 49 out of 50 states. This is the procedure where the physician provides a lethal prescription to a terminally ill patient who intends to end their life. Passively, assisted suicide already takes place by patients refusing treatment, which ultimately results in their slow and untimely death.

- Could you be the one to prescribe a fatal dose of drugs?
- Is euthanasia an issue with which the government should even be concerned?
- Should physician assisted suicide be a personal choice based on values, beliefs and religion?

To find more information on this subject, read the following links:

Please remember, I am asking whether this should be legal or illegal, not whether the issue is morally or ethically right.

I believe it should be legalized. Only the way for the euthanasia to happen it should require a video record of the patient agreeing to the procedure and a consent from 2-3 family memebers, so if one wants the patient to die for money or some other reason it must past the consent. I personally couldnt be the one to give the fatal medication to terminate the patient. The government should be just as concerned about euthanasia as they are about abortion. Euthanasia should be based upon the condition of the patient not their beliefs or religon.

I believe it should be legalized, but only with strict guidelines to be followed. There are countless people that are slowly dieing of various types of cancer that have no hope and are suffering until they die. I think in these cases either they or their family members should consult with their doctor on what they should do in these circumstances. Yes, I think I could make the decision for the fatal dose in the right circumstance. The government is involved in everything, so yes they will be concerned. Yes, it should be baesd on values, beliefs and religion, but also the condition of the patient.

I believe it should be illegal. You are going to die when you are going to die, just face it and go on with life. I would never be able to prescribe anything to help in an assisted suicide. What if the family found out about it, they could put you up for murder. That is just no good. I do believe the government should be concerned because you would be killing someone when they don't want to wait to die.
If the patient is going to die anyway, I still belive that they shouldn't do it.
If you have morals and values I don't think you would be asking for an assisted suicide. You would wait till it's your time to die

I believe it should be legalized. There are many cases when a person will not get better and live in terrible pain. If euthanasia was to be legalized I am sure the government would put many conditions on it like they do with many of the laws. Is it really any different that a living will? You have the choose to not be placed on live support so why should you not be able to end your live with a little dignity? If I knew that was what a family member really want I could be in the room with them when they die, I do not know that I could prescribe the legal dose. No I do not think the government should be involved in such a personal decision.

HILLARY FEARS..Euthanasia should be illegal in my opinion. Life is a very precious gift given by god. When god gave you life he blessed you with time on earth to fulfill duties; once the duties have been fulfilled or god thinks you have done his work successfully he will relieve you by taking you away. By giving patients this lethal medicine the doctor as well as the physician’s assistant is committing murder and that is crime that should not go unpunished. I think that the government should be concerned about euthanasia, because out of 50 states only one is allowing people to die. Physicians’ assistant should make it their choice as to whether they want to kill the patient. Religious beliefs should play a role in their decision. It’s like the committing murder legally, but by god’s standards you are breaking one of the 10 commandments; therefore making your days on this earth less.

i think it should be legalized. if someone is suffering from a terminal illness they should be able to choose if they want to live or not. if the patient is slowly suffering and they chose to not get treatment they definitley need to be able to choose if they want to go more quickly. there need to be very strict rules with it though so that doctors cant just decide when they want to do it themselves. the family needs to talk with the doctor and also the patient so that the doctor knows what the family and patient want. if they feel it is the right thing to do their needs to be documentations of the decision either through papers, or like someone else said, through a video recording. i personally dont think i could give a fatal dose of drugs to someone i knew personally but if i were a doctor doing someone a favor and it was what they wanted, i might be able to do that. i dont think the government should be concerned with this other then making sure all the proper documentation is done.

I think that if you are terminally ill that it should be your choice if you want to go on living with all the pain or not. Euthanasia would be a better choice for some people than to live out the last few months or years in horrible pain and watching all the heartache it is causing their families. No I don't think I could be the one to prescribe a fatal dose of drugs to anyone. Yeah it should be a personal choice.

I believe that it should be illegal. But I think that in some cases it should be legal too. The patient should be in the right state of mind and fully aware of the choice that they made and have a lawful witness and sign a paper stating the reason why they want to have the lethal injection. It is their life they should do what they want with it. On the other hand I do not think that it should be up to the family if the person dies or not because what if they are trying to get something out the situation like a will or property. People are selfish and cruel and will go to all ends of the earth to get what they want. Of course if the person is mentally unstable or ill, then I dont think they should die just because they are special needs. They have a right to live like everyone else. I guess I think of it as kind of immoral and inhumane. No one should really want to die or have someone want them to die. I think that it should be based on the patient and what they want.

Euthanasia should be legal, but I think there should be regulation on it. For example; their patient needs to be terminally ill, in a good state of mind, and the patient needs to find out how the insurants company will cover their death. I have not heard to much about euthanasia for several years, doctor Covorkeyan was the last time. The government should have some regulations over this topic, such as the idioms listed above. I have worked in the funeral bis. for two years, and had love one which were extremely sick. A few years a go, my grand farther had caner, and was terminal. He would spend his time crying to God to take his life. He would say, “God please take me so I can see my wife,” his wife die two years before him. I did not want him to die, but I can understand why he would want to. My grandfather was a handy man, and when he could not walk any more that killed him, even before he died. Seeing the funeral side, and many families in similar situation. I have come to realize that euthanasia would be a good thing. The patient needs be terminally sick thought. It would not be a good idea to have doctor helping to take the life of someone that just need to have a single bi-pass heart surgery or some other surgery which could save their life. If the patient is not in a good mental state, then a procurer which would take their life should not be preformed. No doctor should just help someone commit suicide. Can you imagine on if you’re a doctor, and some teenager comes into the office saying, “I just broke up with XYZ and I want to die. Can you help me kill myself Doc.?” If I was the Doc. I would laugh and send them to a psychologist. Finally, the patient needs to check with their insurance company. Euthanasia could be a deal breaker; the survivors of this person might not get any money for the funeral. Have situation where the family has to pay for the whole funeral by there selves might be very hard for some families, making the funeral a nightmare. A physician or a person in general should never feel like they need to violate their personal believes, values, or religion for a patient. The choice for euthanasia is just that a choice, and it’s up to the person especially if they fall into the categories, listed above.

Physician assisted suicide; more properly called physician aid in dying, is not the same thing as euthanasia. With the former, a competent, terminally ill adult has the legal right to ask his or her doctor for a prescription for a lethal dose of medicine that the patient can use to end his or her own life when, and if, so desired. As it also requires self-administration, control rests with the patient at all times. Conversely, euthanasia involves the death of a patient at the hands of a third party, which is usually a medical professional, and usually by lethal injection. Thus the patient relinquishes control. Euthanasia is illegal everywhere in the United States but physician aid in dying is not; it has been a legal option in Oregon for ten years. Whether one supports aid in dying or not, it is practiced on a regular basis, even though illegal. Studies show at least 6% of doctors admit to having helped a patient end their life and in some specialty areas, like cancer and infectious diseases, the rates are much higher.

I don't think euthanasia should be legalized. I believe even if the patient agrees to it and want to die they it shouldn't happen regardless what there commands are. I would be better to die naturally then to get murdered and that's whats going to happens. It's the word to use for it is murder! It's not right because a life is precious regardless of what the problem may be. On top of that there are miracles that do happen and if I was a family memeber I couldn't live with myself if I agreed to let the person to be "murdered" and hear a story just like the one that was happening in my families case and with some miracle appeared of out nowhere and saved the other person because what if they could of happened to my family and that miracle happened to us, I couldn't live with the what ifs.

I strongly think that it should be legal. If I was paralized from the neck down,I would rather die, then to continue being a human vegetable. Imagine,to have people feed you, bathe, and help you go to the restroom, that would kill what pride and dignity that I have. Then imagine the pain of the family memebers, the inconvience, the pity-no it definatly should be legalized. I think that if I really loved someone I could precribe the fatel dose of the drugs.

It definately should be illegal. I couldn't see how anyone could do this to someone. I would think it would be almost like killing someone. You would think that would be in their mind forever. I would never be able to do it to someone. The government should about making illegal for all fifty states. Should not be a personal choice.

I think that if there is not a chance of survival for the person and the parents or family members all agree to do it because the person will be brain dead the rest of their lives or if they will just be a vegetable with hardly any reaction to the real world i think that it should be considered. I do also think that if the person is so old that they are bed ridden for the rest of their life and they want it to happen i think that it should be allowed. So i think that it should be allowed but only in certain cases.
