Amnesty for illegal immigrants?

Do you know how many illegal immigrants are currently living in the United States? Many of these people are working and contributing to United States culture, but they are not allowed citizenship and do not have the rights that the American citizens they live among enjoy. Many of them are also unable to pay taxes due to their illegal status. Do you think our country should grant amnesty to illegal immigrants who currently live here so that these people don't feel like criminals and can begin to do their share by paying taxes? What do you see as the advantages and disadvantages of amnesty for illegal immigrants?

Thanks for your comments--

I do not know the exact number of illegal immigrants in the U.S., but I'm sure that it is getting into the tens of thousands. Everyone has their own circumstance that may or may not allow them to be a legal immigrant. I wish that there wasn't such a big deal about letting others come in to this country. I believe that the illegal immigrants should be granted amnesty so that they can be considered equal. They should at least have to pay taxes like the rest of us. The advatages of amnesty would be no more talk about illegal immigrants taking over the country. People would be happier. It would allow for great oppotunities for people that may not have the best life. Disadvantages may be that it could get out of hand on how many people start coming to live in the U.S. Overpopulation could be a potential problem.

I think that anyone who is illegal should not be complaining about not being a citizen. If it was that important, they should have entered the country the legal way. As for illegal people in our country already, our government should find the ones we can and make them become a citizen or go back to their own country. I believe the people who truly want to stay will become citizens. John 9:00

i dont know the number of illegal immigrants living in the united states but i am sure it is alot and is growing everyday. yes these people are working and helping out but there are plenty of legal people that can do these jobs. if someone really wants to come to the united states to better their life they need to do it the right way. i dont think the illegal immigrants that are living here should be granted amnesty so they dont feel like criminals, they should have thought about that in the first place. if you want to be treated the same you need to do the right thing and come into the united states legally, no questions about it. there are no advantages for allowing someone amnesty for illegally coming into the country. they shouldnt get special treatment, they should have to get their stuff done legally.

I think that illegal immigrants should get amnesty. if they did, that would mean that there would be a lot more people paying taxes witch in return means lower tax rates. im sure that there are a lot of illegal immegrants and that if they get granted amnesty, more would want to come in. the only disadvantage that i see would be that too many immigrants would want to come in and start coming in, then they just will not have anywhere to live or places will be over populated.

i honestly have no idea how many, or even close to how many illegal immigrants live in the states. Even with them helping out and working they are still taking the jobs that legal american citizens that have no jobs could be doing. They are stealing the jobs that a designed for legal citizens. The illegal immigrants are also affecting the states in a bad way, there have been several cases of illegals getting behind the wheel and either seriously huritng or killing people and then, just dissapearing because they virtually untraceable. So i dont think that the illegals should be allowed amnesty, i think they need to be shipped out of the states and if they want in so bad, they should have to do it legally like most other people

I do not think anyone knows for sure how many illegal immigrants are in this country, the number has been estimated at around 12 million. That is a lot people in this country not paying taxes. I believe it would be impossible to round them all up and send them back to their own countries, but that is what I would like to see done. The entered the country illegally and are now asking to get a free pass for braking the law. Then when they get here they still want special treatment. If you are going to live in a country and expect that country to say," sure, you broke the law, but we will let you stay", the least they can do is learn our language.
Companies are filling jobs will illegals at a cheaper rate than hiring a legal citizen because they know the illegals need jobs. How is this helping us? It is forcing people to take jobs at a lower rate and they have less to support their families on. I say we tell illegal immigrants to pack a bag, go home, and if you want to come back do it legally.

I think the myth that all illegal aliens who come into the United States are hard-working, law-abiding individuals needs to be shot down. Illegal aliens are estimated to make up 3% of the population, while they make up 17% of the federal prison population. That's quite a disturbing fact to swallow. I do not believe that granting amnesty to those who have illegally entered our country will help the United States. I think America needs to stay American. There is a visa system that allows for legal immigration that needs to be used. Breaking the law is breaking the law. You don't see me sneaking into Mexico and protesting for American rights, do you?

[Edit: I realize that might seem harsh, and I would like to add this story to ensure you I'm not a dick. One of my best friends in the Army was an illegal alien living in huntington beach, ca for 11 years. He enlisted in the army and served 4 combat deployments. There's a novel concept, serving your country in order for citizenship.]

I don’t know how many illegal immigrants are currently living in the United States. The illegal immigrants that are living in America are here illegally, so there is no documentations that would say how many actually live here there is only estimations. I think it has be estimated the well over 1 million illegal’s live here.

I believe that illegal’s should not be allowed to work here. The employers that do have illegal immigrants working for them should be shut down, and never allowed to have a business license again.

It is true that illegal’s don’t pay taxes that is because they are illegal immigrants. If they where legal immigrant they would pay taxes just like everyone else.

I don’t think amnesty should be granted for any illegal immigrant. In fact, I think there should be a police force, that would round up all the illegal immigrants and send them out a America. Then, all of their left over possessions should be auctioned off to help pay for the police service.

I feel that the illegal immigrants should go back to where ever they came from and start the legal process to come back here to work, if they want to be in America. This is the way my family did it when they came here. We as Americas can’t give a free pass to criminals just, because they want to live here. To grant amnesty is a slap in the face to anyone who came to America the legal way. There are no advantages of having amnesty granted for illegal immigrants.

I think that those who want to live in our country need to go through the whole process. I know when people hear illegal immigrants they think people coming up from mexico but we have many people coming from other countries. I think if someone wants to become a citizen for our country they need to take the citizen test or fight for our country. If they want to live here so bad they can take the place of our troops and if they come back they are more than welcome to live in our country.

No, I don't know how many illegal immigrants are in the United States. Yeah I think that they should be granted amnesty. I think it would make many of the people who complain about them stop if the immigrants were allowed to pay taxes. I know that that is what many people are complaining about. They work just as hard if not harder than many of us do and I'm sure most of them do feel like criminals. I think it would also help the economy if these people could conribute like the rest of us do.

I dont know how many illegal immigrants live in the U.S., but im sure there is enough to take over a large city like houston or new york. I think if someone has been living here over 5 years and can speak fluent english, then the can be granted amnesty. The only disadvantages i see from doing this is that they will take all the jobs, like already.

I'm sure the number of illegal immigrants in the United States is outrageous. The very small town that I live in has a ton of them. I don't think any of them should complain about not having certain rights. If they wanted them bad enough they could go through the process of becoming a US citizen. If they do not want to do that then they should go back to the country that they came from. The law cannot change for them and they should not get any special treatment.

I am not sure of how many illegal immigrants are living here, but I do know that there are some in Champaign. I believe if they wanted to live here, they should be able to get what they can to be able to live here permanent. I know we are suppose to be a good country and all, but if they want to live here, they need to learn to do it the right way. I have no sympathy for the illegal immigrants if they do not want to take the time to do what they are supposed to do in order to live here.

I don't know how many are living here, but it's way too many. Yes, they are working and contributing to our culture, but they shouldn't be here in the first place. If they want to be citizens they need to go through all the proper channels to do so. Sure they aren't able to pay taxes, that's because they aren't being recognized as legal citizens. They are taking alot of jobs away from current citizen that are out of work. On the other hand they do alot of jobs most citizens don't want to do.

I believe that Illegal Immigrants should not be allowed in the USA. If a immigrant wants to do it the legal way I am not opposed to that. But they should not be allowed to do it illegally. I believe America should do more to stop it but always going to happen no matter what we do. If illegal immigrants gain amnesty I believe they will take jobs from hard working Americans who actually pay taxes and make a living for their family.

It seems 90% of these comments start with I don't know.

The exact number is an estimated 11.6 million. (obviously we don't know because there illigal and we can't count them.)

But only 6.6 of these estimated 11.6 are Mexican. For citation: http://www.dhs.gov/xlibrary/assets/statistics/publications/ill_pe_2006.pdf

Also it seems popular opinion that the Mexicans should come thourgh legally, I agree with this. But in the current state of affairs it is not all that easy. It isn't all that easy to get in. Sometimes it takes years to just be turned away.

All the while they are starving in there own country. The vast population of Mexico is either Corrupt or Starving.

I don't think anyone knows the exact number of illegal immigrants because everyday there are more coming in the country. I don't see how anyone can forgive people for comming into our country without citizenship. These people are criminals and shouldn't be aloud to live in the U.S. Everyone who wants to live here needs to go through citizenship and do it the right way. If they dont have there citizenship they shouldn't be aloud to work.

I feel people should leave them alone. They just want to work and provide a better living for there family. Like I said before the only thing I believe is they should have to get a green card but once they have that they should be okay to live here. The should get paid just as much as we do. They say this country everyone is equal so they should go by that amendment.
