Speaking Spanish?
Should taking Spanish be a requirement in high school since it is the second most commonly used language in America? Consider that over 15 million Mexican immigrants now live in the United States.

I personally took Spanish in high school and I really enjoyed it. I do however think that a student should be given options on what foreign language they would like to take. I don't think students should just be given the options of Spanish and that is it. If a student wants to take French they should be able to and not be forced just Spanish because it is more common in the Untied States. If it was someday to become a requirement I don't see why English shouldn't be a requirement for those who don't speak it. I mean they are in the Untied States where are national language is English I think that should become a requirement before Spanish should.

I don't think it should be required. It would be a valuable class for kids to take, but they should not be forced to learn it. Maybe it could benefit people in certain professional fields like medicine or public service, but it would be more beneficial for Spanish speaking people to learn English.

I agree that people from different countries should learn English; it would benefit them and us in the long run. Knowing another language is always better, but I agree that we should get to pick the language that we want to learn. Everyone is different and there is many different reasons why you might want to lean the language.

I think it's a good idea, beacause most people do speak spanish as there second language. I also agree with Becky it should be the students option what language they would want to take.

I don't think that spanish should be required. This is an english speaking country, why should we be forced to learn another language? I think it should be the other way around; if your coming into our country you should be required to speak english.

I think that high schools shuold make it a requirement for students to take at least two years of a foreign language. I don't think students should be forced to take spanish. I think they should be able to pick what language they learn for the two years.

I think schools should be left alone. Most offer Spanish classes which is good but it's also good they don't require them. We should have the choice to take another language, and people coming in should have to take English classes.

I have mixed opinion on the question. I think that you should know the basics of spanish if you would like to continue your education. If you are not wanting to go further with your education than it should be an elective class. Most schools are wanting the kids to know the language and that is okay, but pushing them to take a class id not the right thing to do. Some kids dont take it in school because they already have a workload and dont think that they can get through the class due to other classes that are harder. Spanish is becoming the new language and americans need to know that language so they can communicate with the people that speak that language. Whether or not they should be forced to take that course in high school in my opinion should be left up to the student.

I think that if you go to another county that you should have to learn the language of that country and not make the people of that country bend for you. So my answer is, no, I think that spanish shouldn't be a requiremnt. If imigrants wish to come to America and live here then I believe that they should learn English, not the other way around. In my opinion it makes no sense for us to learn their language when they have come to America, which is an English speaking country. If I were to move to Mexico then I would expect to have to learn spanish. Though I would hope that everybody would be understanding and still try to understand what someone who doesn't speak English, or at least good English, is trying to say. But I still feel that forcing Spanish on college students isn't right. If they wish to take it then they can, but there are other languages to learn, so they can learn whatever they wish, if they want to.

We are a national melting pot of different cultures and backgrounds. Forcing people to take a certain language is un-constitutional. Nowhere in our constitution does it say that English is our national language so therefore english should not be manditory. Someone just chose it to be manditory because it makes life easier because of the language barrier we have today. It more like a common ground for all people to interact on.
Spanish shouldn't be manditory and nor should any other language. Now it would benefit us greatly to learn all sorts of languages: Spanish, French, English, German, Italian, Latin, and so many more because it would better suit our nation as a whole. The communication will prosper and we would not have the barriers.
Spanish nor English should be manditory.

I dont think that it should be required. Students should be encouraged to take them but they should never have to take a forign language. But, with the rise of spanish speaking people coming into our country I think as well that they have to learn to learn English. Why should we have to be the ones to adapt. They are coming to live in our country they should have to learn to speak our language.

I personally can speak both spanish and english fluently. I think that learning spanish in highschool though shouldnt be a requirement, it should be up to the student and it should be his or her responsibility to take the class. In this nation though, being bilingual is becoming more of a desired trait in the job industry, and those with multiple language speaking abilities will be picked over somone who just speaks one language. Its the same in other countries as well, for example in Mexico, someone who can speak ENGLISH and spanish will be picked over someone who just speaks spanish. In Mexico its a requirement to learn english because they believe the student will have a better chance to succede in life there in that country. In my highschool, kids that had another language as there native tongue were put in a class were they were tought to speak english so they can improve thier acedemic careers in school. So while speaking spanish would help in the job industry i still dont think it should be a requirment, its up to the student to want a better chance at succes, so in the long run its just down to darwin's theory in life, survival of the fittest.

Honestly, no I don't think it should be required. The language of our country is not Spanish. So I think tyhat Mexicans should have to learn English. Don't get me wrong, I love that they want to come to America and make their lives better. One of my best friends is even Mexican. I just don't think we should have to be the ones learning a new language.

I feel that it should not be required that high school students take spanish. It would be a good idea that students take the language however because the odds that they will work with or for someone who's primary language is spanish are good. It would also work to your advantage in the job market. I find myself getting a little put out with the idea that english speaking americans are having to adjust to having to listen to phone answering services in spanish. We do live in the US after all. We should not be the ones adjusting to a new language.

I don't feel taking Spanish should be required to take in high school. I took Spanish and I enjoyed learning it, but of course I have never had to use it. Learning a different language should be up to the student there are other languages out there that students may find more interesting. Use learning Spanish is not as important as people coming from different country learning to speak English.

I don’t think it should be a requirement in high school. Just because it is the second most commonly used language in America doesn’t mean it needs to be learned. Not everyone wants to learn Spanish and cares about the language. I don’t think high school students should be forced to learn a language that they don’t want to learn. It would be nice for everyone to know how to speak Spanish but it’s not a big deal if you don’t know how. All the immigrants should just go back to Mexico.

Yes I think it should be a requirement. I walk into so many restuants these days and have a hard time understanding the management and employees. I'm going to take spanish in the fall.
I think it should. I actually want to learn it now. Its good to know spanish because there so many jobs for it and ppl that speak it.
AshleyMitchell
No, I dont think so yet its not a bad thing to learn different languages. I agree that there are so many mexicans living in the states but yet I think they need to learn English because there live in this country and its their job to learn our language not our job to speak what they understand.
Neli Aryani (10:00)
I dont know this one is tough. I think that because the hole country is mainly in english that taking a language should be optional. Should it be the other way around that they learn english rather than having spanish in high school. It is a arguement that can go either way but i think it should be optional because english is all around us and i never did good in spanish in high school and it brought down my gpa. So why should I struggle when there is no need.
K.J. Picard(9:00)
I don't think that any foreign language should be a requirement. I definitely think that they should be offered during grade school, and continued through high school, for those that want to take them. However, English is the national language, and therefore, there should be no languages forced. Even the signs, or automated tele-services should not have both English and Spanish like they do. The people that come to America should either A)Learn English before coming B)Just have a rough time while they learn English here. If I were going to live in Mexico, or France, or Iraq (which I have); I would take the time to learn their language, because I am in THEIR country. And it should be the same for the US. Plus there are programs, where immigrant, can take English as a 2nd language at little to no cost to them. The immigrants, as a single person, just need to put in a little extra effort to be "Americanized", rather than the entire country becoming more "Immigrantized".

Yes it should because then people will know how to work with that person and be able to translate thier language to others

I think that all students would be wise to take a foreign language.. I also think they should take whatever language they choose all four years, and into college if they want.
