Do professional athletes make too much money?

Professional athletes do have amazing talents--that's why they're professionals. But do they deserve the huge amounts of money they are paid? Some athletes will make more money signing their first contract than some families will earn in a lifetime. What is your opinion on this? Are athletes overpaid or not?

I do agree that professional athletes have amazing talents. Many of these athletes we look up to they are our heroes. I do however think they are WAY overpaid. They thing I don't get is that teachers that we trust to teach our children only make an average of $40,000 when athletes make millions and millions for throwing a ball. This really makes no sense to be whats so ever. I don't think its fair that professionals who help people everyday and give their life to do so get paid so much less than these athletes. People who have devoted their life to their career will never make as much as an athlete.

I do think that athletes are over paid. Athletes, in my opinion, are spoiled. I'm not much of a sports fan, but my thinking is that it is just a game and that they don't need that much money. I have never understood why athletes are paid so much to play a game.

Athletes are paid big bucks because they bring in big bucks from all the fans and because they are good at what they do. I kind of they they are paid just a little too much. First contract is more money than a family will earn in a lifetime? That's crazy. With the state of country is in we need this money to go around. Paying athletes that much is ridiculous. Yeah, so what if they can hit a ball, and catch one, or even kick one? That much money is a little crazy. Of course, in my opinion they should be paid a lot but not an extreme amount.

Athletes are overpaid and over privileged. The only way to really fix this if we think it is a problem, is to quit going to games and buying certain brands that pay athletes large amounts of money. It is so unfortunate how much money teachers make, but lucky for us, they go into that profession on their own because they want to make a difference in the lives of children (or just get summers off).:)

I think athletes are paid to much. They do put a lot of time into what they do and work very hard but if they love the sport they are not doing it for the money they are doing it because they want to be better and for their love of the game. i understand they are at higher risk to be injured but they have insurance to cover that.

I'm not really into sports like that. Athletes are called professional for a reason, because they are good at what they do. But I do agree that they are way overpaid for something that they like to do. Since they love playing the sport why do they need to get paid so much money. I don't believe that they would do it if they got paid like a regular job. Every time you turn around there is a athlete getting into some kind of trouble and they use their money to get out of that trouble. It is ok for them to make money but not as much as they are making.

Who cares if they are professionals and are good at what they do? There are a lot of people with all kinds of jobs that are good at what they do and don’t make millions. Sports aren’t even really important in this world. People shouldn’t get millions for just playing a game when others have jobs that are actually important. Firefighters save lives while they are risking their own life but don’t get paid millions. Teachers use up so much of their time helping students and don’t get paid what they deserve. They should pay the athletes less and give the extra money to help pay off the national debt.

I think athletes do get paid a little too much just for playing a game. I'm not really a big sports fan, so i don't know about most of this. I do agree though that they are over paid just for playing a game. How many athletes would there be if they weren't getting paid near as much as they do now? i don't think there would be as much.

They are way to highly paid. The cost of the players and coaches has made going to a ball game for a family out of the question. An other problem is that with so much money they can get into a downward spiral of drugs, spending, gambling and end up with nothing. I think it is too much to fast for most of the players. Look at the mess that Wrothensburger (sp) is in right now. He thought that since he was a big star he could do anything to anyone. Well, that isn't true! I think these guys are very talented and it is a horible shame when things like that happen. they need to held accountable for what they do just like the rest of us.

Proffesional athletes are great at what they do but they are only so good at their sports because they love to play that sport and have been playing it all their lives. If I got to make a living off of playing my favorite sport I wouldn't be whining so not being paid enough. These guys are so lucky to get paid tons of money for doing something they love yet they still think they should get more money.

I thik that they do get paid excessively. They need to be paid for their ability to be such good athelets, but not so much money. The money that they pay athelets could go to the trillions that our county is in debt or to homeless people who have nothing.

They deserve what they make. They worked hard to get to the level they are at. The people that make too much unfair money are the people at wall street not athletes.

Some are and some aren't it. I agree with this but you have to look at it in a differen't way, the advertising that goes into the games, how many people spend money on tickets to go watch them play, and how many people tune into their television to watch. If they were so over paid they wouldn't bring in this kind of revenue with all the ticket sales, jersey sales, and advertising.

I think that professional athlets make to much mony. Professional athlets are really good at what they do and they do work really hard at the sport they play. The athlets and coaches are getting paid to much and this is making it hard for family's to go to professional sports games, because the tickets are getting to expensive. I feel that they should not be getting as much money there are lots of people that maybe are not good at sports but are very good at the job they do, but don't get nearly as much money for what they are doing.

Yes and Yes! Way too much money. We all have to face many opsticles and endure alot as individuals. If I work my ass off I want paid too. And I will never make that kind of money. Even if I was a doctor I still wouldn't make what they make and that's crazy. I'd be saving lives and entertainers or professional athletes would be entertaining it.

Athletes are only rich in the first place because we buy their merchandise. Whether it's from their endorsements from large corporations or from the league they play in, it is us the fans that are making them rich.
If you say that you do not like the way they are payed then stop buying their merchandise.
