Does the Champaign Police Department take their authority TOO far?

The police are supposed to be the ones you are able to go to for help when something is wrong. They are the ones who are here to protect the city from crime and make sure the streets are safe. Growing up, this has not been the case for me, and every day it seems like police crime gets worse and worse. How do you feel about our police department in Champaign? Are there times when they take situations too far, or do you believe they are right in doing their job? Do you know of anyone that has been in an incident or have seen incidents where the police take things too far? Have you ever had issues with the police?

Cops today have changed almost for the worst. They will take a small thing and turn it into a big ordeal. The do not listen to what you have to say because they always think you might be lying, plus they will twist the story around to make it sound like you are the on at fault even if your not. They have become drunken with there power and they need to relize even if they do were a badge it does not they are always right. Back in the day there were plenty cops willing to help and give warnings. Today it is to hear what they want to hear, harrase who they want, and write plenty of tickets.

i think that anyone who says that all cops have gone over the edge are complete idiots. There are some cops out there who dont care and those are the bad cops. its hard to understand what your talkin about when you say they overreact. if your meaning how they might occasionally freak out on an innocent person because he is doin suspicous stuff while being questioned. not being cooperative when he knows that he is innocent. the reason cops have to be on edge like this is because you never know what can happen in one slit second. cops have to show that they are the ones in charge. FOR THEIR SAFETY!!!! they dont do it to be dicks but in a cops mind..the one thing they have to keep in mind..do i want to go home tonite or do i want to let someone unexpectedly pull a weapon on me and injure or kill me. put yourself in there shoes once before you critisize!!

I cant really comment on the police in Champaign because i dont live here i live in Rantoul, but i think that police officers do take things to far and that is why i dont like to talk to them. If i have seen something and they want to question me i dont like to talk to them, if something is going on and the police really should be involved i avoid calling them or trying to get there attention. I once was with me my sister and the person i was dating at the time and we decided to go to the lake. Me sister stayed in the car and me and the person i was with went to sent by the lake and just talk it was about 9:30. Next thing i know i see police lights so i get up and walk towards my car. The police where questioning my sister and the told me to stop where i was and put my hands in the air. I was wondering what was going on because we hadn't been smoking or drinking we just wanted somewhee to hang out because we were all under age. They told me to put my hands on the car and spread my legs and one the the officers proceeded to pat me down and ask me did i have anything on us and i said no. While the other officer was talkin to me the other one proceeded to check me car for drugs. what did i wrong we just wanted a place to chill and ended up getted check for drugs all because the said the parks where closed but i had been there many nights before.

i personal do not live in champaign so a can't really say how they are but i do know that the cops where i live do a ok job of keeping people safe but ther have been times when the cops have taken the situations too far in that they will be driving by a house that they know there is a party but they will make a big deal out of it and keep driving by and look like they are doing to stop when they really won't. They just do it becaseu there is noting else to do. i personal have never had any really issues with the cops the only thing would be them driving by houses that i was at and trying to act like they were going to do something about it when i knew they wouldn't

I am not aware of the Champaign Police but I have heard of stories of other police in different areas who were being unfair to someone because of their race. They pull them over and give them tickets for no perfectly good reason and would always suspect they were up to no good because they were not white. I think it's really sad when officers act like this because they should act respectful and fairly to everyone. It is true that we do go to the police when we need help and I hope not all police are disrespectful.

This is a tough situation for me because i have never lived in champaign. But from what i see i think that they are doing the best job they can. There will always be cops that abuse their authority but for the most part i think most cops want to protect and serve. They have a very tough job because what ever they do someone will always think that they got screwed and someone will think that justice was served.

Everyone should be able to answer this question. Yes the champaign police department take their authority too far. The police in champaign never have anything to do, so when something does happen, the whole police is their bothering people for no reason. They pull you over for little things, and try to get a reason to search you.

I really dont know what to say in response to this. I have never really lived in Champaiqn. I have an apartment down here but I only have that for school and work. I have never really had to deal with the cops. I have a few times and when this happened they were just doing what they were supposed to do. Phillip is right when he says that there will always be cops that abuse their power and I am sure that there are some here in Champaign. I just haven't seen it.

I have heard many stories about Champaign police taking their authority too far. I live in Rantoul, and the community has changed for the worse from a decade ago. There are a lot of people moving from big cities to live in Rantoul. I have seen Rantoul police take things too far or not far enough. I had witnessed a little African American girl being hit while walking her bicycle across Rt 136, where the group of children pushed the button. She was the last one-the senior citizen took off and hit her. It was raining, my cousin and I stopped to help her. I called 911 on my cell phone, and it took 20 minutes for the police to even show up, and 30 for the abulance. When the police showed up, they were acting as if she was the one at fault. The older gentleman didn't even get a warning/ticket-they let him go. The officer who arrived was so rude and let her lie there in the rain. My cousin was trying to sheild her from the rain, with the cop being a total ass.
I know that most African Americans get a raw deal at times. I am not saying all of African Americans are perfect, but most times they are harassed for the color of their skin, especially if the police feel they fit a certain profile.
I have seen firsthand in Ludlow, the police are the same. My brother is known for his behavior, so when they came to question him for something, they were pushing his buttons, and it resulted in physically harming my brother. He didn't swing or present any danger to them. When questioned regarding their actions, they tried saying they thought he had a weapon.
I feel most police do take their authority too far, which gives a negative outlook for those good cops trying to better communities.

I have good experieces with the champaign police they have helped me everytime that I needed it. They even gave me good advice about what to do. I do believe that maybe they take things to far, but its probably because they just want everyone to be safe. that could be why they might make an arrest when it may not seem necessary.

I am not from Champaign and I do not live in Champaign, but for the most part I believe that there is a lot of problems with the way that the police handle many situations. I do believe that there is still a lot of profiling adn that many times the police are wrong and many times they are right. I feel that there are many areas in which the police can improve. I think that police really need to work on the way that they interact with the people. I also think that they should take workshops to help them improve their "image" and also help them improve their relationships with the community.

If I've seen any problems with the Champaign-Urbana police department is that they dont do enough. Driving down Bradley, I've seen cars, including myself, drive by cops doing radar going 55 miles per hour and the cop not do anything. Another time on Bradely two kids were actually fighting on the sidewalk and I watched two cop cars drive by, look at them, and then not say a word and leave. I just feel that the cops down here dont give two shits. Now in Bloomgington-Normal, if a cop thinks you looked at him wrong your gonna get pulled over. Cities are just different in the way they take care of things. Cops in one city worry about something when the cops in another city dont even pay attention to. There just needs to be more consistancy in cops in all towns, states or whatever. But in regards of cops taking things too far, I dont think its too big of an issue in Illinois, unless your in Chicago.

I feel that the Champaign Police and police in general do a good job. They are here to protect and serve you. But when you do something you are not supposed to or you are in the wrong place in the wrong time, then they will ask you some questions. still this is not a problem. answer the questions and go home if you are innocent. if you are not and you are not coorperating then you will have some problems with them. I think that cops do a good job and do what they think is right. If you are acting weird then they will ask you questions, which is what they are supposed to do. If you dont answer their questions then they arrest you, it is not that they are assholes, you disobed a law and that is what happens when you do that. I think that most people do step back and think about the situation that they are in when they get "harrassed" by cops. Most of the time they are doing something wrong or are not where they should be.

I think that police should worry more about high crime areas that are infested with drugs and violence and not worry so much on areas that have zero crime. I feel that some police are always looking to pull someone over just for the heck of it and trying to make a big deal that you are going five miles over the speed limit. I feel that in a serious matter, police do their job to the best of their abilities, but when it comes to something petty like not putting on your turn signal, they over do it.
