We see it in the subways, on freight trains, on viaducts, on public restroom walls, even on classroom desks: graffiti. The question is if it is an art form that must be perfected, or an act of criminal deviance that must be suppressed. Is there a division on what constitutes graffiti? Is the carving of intitials in a bar bench and and bathroom wall quips different than spray paint art? Should the choice of canvas constitute whether or not it can be considered art?

I do think that Graffiti is art, and as long as it's not degrading than I think it's ok to paint or carve it were it's welcome. Unfortunately others peoples property is just that Other Peoples Property, yet possibly a mutual aggrement can be made between the artist and the owner. I think it would make the world a brighter and prettier place to have more artwork around the world, yet we should respect one another and simply ask for permission- you never know maybe if the painter asks first the building or train owner would be willing to pay for the artwork.Amy Marx

If the person painting it has permission from the owner of the property it is ok. Trian cars should be completely off limits becasue when people paint on train cars they can cover information about what is in the cars an may cause the death of many people. you wonder how? if a train car would derail and ave a pioison in it and the cars label is covered the poison could be mistaken for something else and not cleaned up correctly and cause the deaths of many people. When the painter has permission i think it is a great way to express your self but when it can cause danger to others it should be illegle.

What constitutes graffiti in my opinion would be whether or not the message that the artist is trying to convey is abusive or hateful in content. If it insults the people it is not graffiti or an art form. I feel that spray painting surfaces that do not belong to the artist is considered damage to the property which also includes carving of initials in a bar bench and the bathroom walls quips. I think that graffiti is an art and that people should see graffiti. Writing on a desk or in a bathroom stall at a school is not important because it does not portray to many. Outside, graffiti may look like art, but most people think that it is a harm, but to whom or to what?
Graffiti, in my mind, can definitely be art. It's a way for people to leave their mark on this world using a train or a billboard as their canvas. It's a way for people to express their feelings to people passing by, and whether it's vulgar or not it is the most honest art one may be able to make. With that said graffiti can still be very much illegal. Writing on another person's property is definitely not the "right" thing to do at anytime.

i am actualy a fan of graffiti art and i personaly think it is illegl, in most cases. but thats what makes it so apealing, that someone broke the law to make something beautiful. i am working on perfecting my technique on the spray painting. i think that Graffiti is the uraban way of expressing ones self, and its not harmful. it adds color to the city and such.

I have to agree with Amy - I think that Graffiti is an art form, as long as it isn't degrading to people (for example the use of racial slurs or profanity). I do believe, however, that doing it on private property should be punishable under law. Art is an expression, but artists need to know where and how they can express their art. I think that carving your initials or other words into a bar stool or bathroom wall or on whatever can be considered art, but I don't think it should be done - it is messing with another person's property and people should be respectful. I also believe graffiti is only defined by spray paint art and not carvings. Consituting whether it's art or not depends on each person's opinion - in my opinion, as long as it doesn't purposely offend anyone, then it's art.

I thing this is a very interesting question. I think some people might be offended by graffiti. I don't think that they should be, but no matter what is said or done, somebody will always at least one person that will take offence. I think it is absolutely art in every sense of the word. Really it depends on where the graffiti is located, if it is on a viaduct, train, or a rundown building, than it is ok. If it is on somebody's personal property like a house, apartment complex, car or some building that is currently in use, than it is a crime. No need to damage good property or that of others that own it.

I think that it could be either one depending on what the subject is. It doesnt matter what hte medium was it just matters what the subject is. If the subject is just trash talk on the bath room stall then its not art.so i dont think that inititals and name carvings are diifernt then other graffiti. If its not just trash talk but something that focuses more on the writing itself than what it says then its art. I think graffiti in the form of spraycan art is art. It has form, color, and other properties that would qualify it as being art. Just doing something with spraypaint might make it graffiti, but it does not necessarily qualify it as art or graffiti art. when the spray paint atr is analyzd and a value to people, then there is even more evidence to suggest that it is genuine art.

Graffiti is both art and crime. It is a work of art, but one that doesn't belong on someone else's property. We are taught from a young age to respect others and their belonings, whoever that person may be. The point is it's not yours to paint on. Graffiti is not only crime, it causes crime. Crime begets more crime. Crime is much more likely to take place in an enviornment where crime has already taken place. It's called the broken window theory and has been around since the '80s.

I believe graffiti can be looked at as either artwork or a criminal act. Most of the time people don't have permission to paint something and therefore would be a crime. When I do see graffiti though it is something cool and makes it look better. I think we should respect other people's property and maybe just ask for permission to use it. Graffiti to a desk or something small doesn't do much good, but graffiti on something large where a lot of people see it serves as artwork. People leave their marks through graffiti.

I think graffiti is both can be an art and a crime. I don't think it is appropriate to paint on government property, however when I am stuck waiting for a train, the graffiti is interesting to look at. I think there should be designated places (concrete walls, and areas), for these artists to express their work. They are very talented, and should be encouraged to go to school for art and display their work in galleries.
