audrey's quiestion on crime?

Do you think that crime in schools is out of control? Why, or why not?

What more could be done to prevent the crimes? Do you know of an example, that you would like to share, one that happened in your scool?

I think that crime could be out of control in larger cities, but in the small town I live ion, we don't have a problem with it. I would have to say that there is nothing I can think of to lower the crime rate other than stricter punishments for offenders. Sorry this is short, but that's all I can come up with!

Villa Grove High School has virtually no crime. I cannot offer what crime is like it a big school, but I will tell you about my high school. a recently instated principal has taken unprecendented and unnecessary security measures to "protect" students. Protect us from what? Security cameras are only capturing janitors sweeping the hallways and locked doors are only stirring up frustration. Kids will be kids. I do not think much can be done to prevent crime in school. If anything, strict administrations need to lighten up on disciplinary policies to ensure pupils do not get frustrated to the point of being physically abusive to another human.

i do think that violence is out of control. We has 6 or 7 fights this year in my high school. Most of whom were between girls. To some people who went to a big school that may not seem like a lot- but we only have about 450 people in our high school ( my class size was 98) Most kids don't even care anymore about being suspended because they don't like school. They also don't go home either because what do you think they get at home?? I think the schools need to think up new ways of punishment because most kids these days aren't getting any discipline at home or at school.

I have never had any experience with bigger schools. Our high school has 200 students total in it, so we don'thave problems with crime. One of my friends moved away to Champaign and began attending Centennial High School. She was telling me calmly how many fist fights occured in one year. I was astounded, but she said that she had gotten used to it. She also said that a kid had brought a knife to school and that she had had to stay in a room for hours while they searched everyone. I think that suspension is a ridiculous way to punish kids. They just want to stay at home any way, right? For kids who don't care about school, don't suspend them, make them do community work. As for preventing the crimes, I am not sure as I have not had a whole lot of experience with crime in school.

I think crime in schools is awful, but to say it is out of control may be a reach. Some schools could say that they are out of control; having kids, show up to school with guns and knives is scary. I think having metal detectors at all entrances to larger schools is a good idea, but most small schools seem safe. My son is going to summer school in Champaign, there have already been two fights in one month, and there were a few arrests. Darcy Cekander

I am sure that crime in schools is a big issue in big schools. I went to a small school and we have had no problems. Our high school locks their doors even during the day so no one can come in or out. We also have a champaign police officer on duty every day. She takes care of all problem even if they are minor. As I said we have only had minor issues. We had a couple student deal drugs but that's it. No real violence. Hope that helps.

i'm not quite sure about the statistics on crime in schools, but i don't here about the crime in schools being a huge thing. i don't know of the crime in schools needing to be controlled any further. if there is a lot of crimes in schools that i'm completely oblivious to, than i think something should be done. maybe the school should have some extra security if they know the crime rate is high. i don't think they should try to control the students by making new rules for the school, because i think that will make the problem worse. i think that if they did that than the crime rate would increase because students would be likely to rebel.

I feel like for the most part schools are under control. But i do think that their could be less problems as far as drugs, crime, fights...things like that. I know that at my school in perticular i felt like many of the problem that did occure weren't handled how they should've been by the administration. I feel like too many times the administration would start to disipline the student/students and then the students parents would complain and because the administration didnt' want to have any problems with parents they would back down on disipline. for example, One of my peers this past year got caught with drugs and the was suppose to be expelled. His mom came in and argued with the administartion and magically the next day the expellation was turned into a 2 week suspention. i just find it disturbing that the people who are suppose to be the role models of the school turn out to be wuses when it comes to cracking down on school problems, in fear of getting their hands a little dirty.

The school I went to (MSHS) was a peacefull school the only thing bad that happened is some kids spilled cheese over each other and started to slap their way to victory. I think most schools are like this because most of the students do not like causing to much trouble. I think the only schools that have a problem with crime are the ones that are in poor and under kept. The schools here have students that only think about today and not their future so they are more willing to start fights and commit crime in schools. so all together i do not think crime is out of control insteed i think it is the students that think of no future that are making schools a dangerous place to go to. So if you get every student to think about their future and have them go at it with all their strength then i think crime in schools will go down Tremendously

I have not been exposed to any serious crime at my school. The most that has really happened has been when kids were caught having drugs. However, I have heard of terrible things happening at other schools such as major fights, hazing, and even shootings. One student was accused of raping a girl and was hazed severely. Some guys smeared feses all over him and some other pretty disturbing things. So I guess in some places crime has gotten out of hand. To control this, there should be some type of security cameras where crime is out of control.

I think crime is becoming a bigger and bigger problem in the schools today. I say this because just a couple of weeks ago I went to pick up my cousin from summer school at Centennial and when I got there the entire street was blocked by students fighting it was about 20-30 in the fight and what seemed to be hundreds more just standing around watching. During this ordeal I did not see any school personel excect for a dean standing inthe doorway of the school. Once I got out to look for my cousin I did see a police officer getting into an ambulance because he was bleeding fromt he eye. At this same fight I witness a girl getting pulled out of the window of a car. When I found my cousin she said this was a continuation of a fight the day before.
I think violence is increasing because no one is adressing the problem, yes kids are getting suspended ad going to jail but that does not solve the problem just diverts it till another day. These kids need counseling or some type of program which are being cut everyday to fund the superintendent's $200,000 per year salary to redirect their aggression so they don't have time to fight.

I dont think that crime in smaller schools is out of control. I do think in bigger school where you have thousands of kids walking around that crime is probably out of control. I bet when a fight breaks out in a smaller school, the teacher wont think twice about trying to break it up. At a bigger school Im sure they probably think to themselves that they might get stabbed or punched if they step in. I dont think much more can be done in schools to control crime, if somethings going to happen, it will happen. Aaron Royse

I am not very aware of crimes commited in school. I go to a very small high school, and for the most part, there aren't very many crimes or acts of violence. In the 3 years that I have been in high school, I believe I have heard about one fight, which was a fist fight between two guys. So as you can see, I have not been exposed to very much violence or crime in school. For smaller schools, I don't believe that violence or crime are out of control. But in larger schools, it may be a much bigger issue. I have heard of several school shootings and older student hazing the freshmen, but again, I am not sure how out of control it is! Sorry that I haven't been much help!

I think that crime in schools can get out of control at times. From what I can remember, it seems to come and go in waves. I think it was last year when Champaign Central had a string of incidents involving fights at school that were so bad they made the news. Even worse was that some of the people involved didn't even go to school there. I'm pretty sure that the first fight led up to a couple more that followed.

About 7 or 8 years ago, it seemed like ever other week there was a school shooting happening, and of course the infamous Columbine shooting 7 years ago in 1999. I think that the school shootings were being copycats of eachother.

I think the only way to prevent these things from happening, is to have security guards placed in the school. I grew up in the rather small town of Chatham, IL, and my high school had off duty police officers roaming the halls, and this was before the Columbine shootings happened. We still had our minor high school fights over stupid stuff, like all high schools have, but nothing major or serious like a shooting or people getting jumped.

Hope my reply helps you Audrey.

crime in school has gotten way out of hand, the last crime i read about was the incident that happen in a school on 44th street in Chicago. Basically a student was attacked by several other students and was smeared with human feces, the teachers who tried to resolve the situation were also smeared with feces, the problem is really just bad parenting, if you raise your kids the right way then they will probably be okay.
