Ashley's Question

I know this is a hard topic to talk about, but please think through your responses before posting them. If I could get all the responses by the end of the week that would be great. Thanks.

Do you think that abortion should be illegal? In what cases, if any, should abortion be legal?

I don't think that abortion should be illegal. The basis of my opinion comes from the mear fact that even if abortion becomes illegal, that doesn't mean it will get rid of the want that people have to get an abortion. Therefore, if people still want to get an abortion and it's illegal, they will find other ways that might not be as safe and in return doing more harm to themselves than good.

I don't agree with abortion, but I do believe that in certain scenarios it is acceptable. Such as an unwanted pregnancy do to rape or through incest.

Pro-Life President Ronald Reagan said it best: "I notice that everyone who is for abortion has already been born." Abortion allows people, including many teens, to reap the benefits of sex without learning the consequences. Abortion is murder. The monumental decision of Roe v. Wade has killed numerous more innocent lives than Hitler did in the Jewish Holocaust. Perhaps the reason that a cure for cancer has yet to be found is because the Supreme Court has not given millions of Americans a chance to live. We all have the inalienable rights of "LIFE, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness." Remember, it is a child, not a choice.

Abortion is a hard topic to talk about. I believe that abortion is ok in some instances such as rape. I don't know if I could look at a child the same if I was raped because its not like you were careless and had unprotected sex. But other than that I don't believe in abortion. If you make the mistake of getting pregnat than I think you should still have the child. There are other options out there such as adoption. Many parents can't have their own children and would be a good home for them.

I have a very passionate view about abortion, so if you are offended I am sorry! I think abortionis very wrong and should definetly be illegal. The only cases where I see abortion as an okay option, is when both the life of the mother and baby are soon to be lost. If they are both going to die soon, and the only way of saving one of them is to abort the baby, then that is what needs to be done. I hate to see the loss of life in such a small and promising little being, but losing one life instead of two is a worthy cause I think. I do not believe that abortion in the cases of rape and incest are okay, those are cases of convenience rather than saving a life. There is always adoption if looking at the child will bring back traumatic memories of rape, but you have to know that there are going to be other reminders of the incident and the baby is not going to be the only reminder. Also, why would you want more negative feelings on top of what you are already experiencing? I would rather have horrible feelings about being raped, yet a wonderful child to show for it than to be traumatized by both the rape and murder of my child.

Abortion is a hard subject. A part of me doesn't want it to be legal because that is killing a helpless baby. But a part of thinks it should be legal because what kind of a life can someone give a child that they don't even want. In the end, i think it should be illegal. My sister is only 22 and has 3 kids, one who is 5 years old. As hard as it was on her to have a baby in high school she did it and once that baby was here we couldn't help but love it. We just think all the time how all of lives would be different if she never had her baby and we are glad that she did.

This is a very hard question to answer. There are several factors to think about rape, medical problems, age, and preference. I think women should have the choice whether to have a baby or not, but I do not agree to abortion just because she accidentally got pregnant. I really do not think there is such a thing as an accidental pregnancy. I believe if you are responsible enough to have sex that you should have to accept the consequences of getting pregnant. So many families would like to adopt a child and they wait so long. My opinion is if you get pregnant and do not want the child; give it to someone that would give it a great home.
I do think if a child gets pregnant by an abuser or if someone is raped, women should have the choice of keeping the child or aborting it. Children should not have to carry a child from someone that has abused her; they are going to have a rough enough time dealing with the abuse. A rape victim goes without saying. Rape is a hard enough thing to get over, but to carry the child of a rapist would be a far too excruciating event. Some women are strong enough to handle the event, but some are not.
Medical reasons are another subject. If you are pregnant and there is proof that you or the child’s life is at risk, you should be able to make a choice. I when pregnant with my first child and the doctors thought she had Spinal Bifida, I had an Amniocentesis, I had to decide if the results came back positive whether to keep the child or not. I had a rough three weeks until I found out the tests were negative. Luckily, I did not have to make the harsh decision. However, some women do. Darcy Cekander

Hi, Ashley. The only time an abortion might get my approval is when the pregnancy is severely threatening the mother's life, but since there is that one exception, I don't want to see abortion totally criminalized.

If people would understand and accept that the lives of babies conceived but yet to be born are as valuable as the lives of babies already born, most cases of abortion would be recognized as murder and, thus, be morally wrong and legally punishible. The only abortions that wouldn't be murder are those rare cases when the killing is morally justified (e.g., when the life of the mother is threatened).

I don't think that abortion should be illegal. I was raised Catholic, so I do believe it is wrong. I dont think it should be legal for the women who get pregnant and want to end it just because she cant afford the child or just doenst want the responsibility of raising the child. There are many alternatives after the pregnancy to give the child away. I do think it should be legal for the fact that if a woman gets raped or if the baby has something wrong with it or it will end up hurting the woman. Aaron Royse

hink that aborition should be illegal Only if the chilfd and or mother is in sevre danger of dying should abortions take place. I think it should be a hard process to have one done and I also think there should be very stiff fines and punshiment if one is done and not really needed.

I think that abrtion is nesesary in some matters, One is that these days, girls are starting to have unprotected sex as young as 10 years old. these girls are not equiped to raise a child in todays socieity. And second a older person may not be able to do the same. i feel that it is up to the mother and parents to decide weather to keep the baby or to let it go. Maybe it could teach them a lesson, being pregnat means that your life is now gone. everything you do now will be for that child.
Yes i think that abortion should be Legal because baby's should't be having baby's. And just as long as they decide before they go into the second trimester.

I believe that abortion should be made illegal. Many times, abortion is used very selfishly. Young teenage couples that have sex, even though they aren't prepared to become a parent, have an abortion to "save" their lives. They don't want to have the responsibilites of raising a child, so they choose to kill an innocent baby. I definitely don't think that is fair!

I do have very few exceptions. For instance, if a mother has several children at home and delivering the baby might cause her to die, then in order to save the mother, an abortion should take place. Also, if a girl is raped by a family member and gets pregnant, then I think the baby should be aborted because it will most likely have very serious birth deffects.

I feel that abortion should be legal, because a women has the right to do whatever she wants to with the body that god has given her.

I think tha abortion should be illegal. I think that its the persona choice weather or not to have sex, and with that comes the responsibility and the possibilty of becoming pregnant. if someone doesn't want any chance of that they should not have sex. Its wrong to take the life from a child before they even get a chance to live that life.

Someone said in a comment earlier that a teenager might not be ready to raise a child and i completley agree...but abortion still isnt' the option. The teenager could put the child up for adoption and that child would have a chance to live a happy healthy life.

There is only one way i think an aborition would be ok, and that is if the mother is having complications and might die because of the pregnancy. any other situation i think there are always better options.

Hi, Ashley. I feel bad about how the abortion issue has been sort of pushed aside over the last 10 years or so. Meanwhile, many unborn babies continue to be killed. I'm not sure how many abortions occur in the United States every year, but I just read one site that said this:

"In the year 2002, about 1.29 million women in the U.S. had abortions. In 1990, that number was 1.61 million."

Maybe the significant decline in the number of abortions in the United States has something to do with people not making a lot of noise about the issue anymore. But 1.29 million is still a bunch of abortions for a single year, especially to people like me, who think the number should be more like 1,000 or so.

The only cases that I think abortions are okay are when the mother's health is at high risk. In cases when the mother's health is at risk AND the baby is likely to have severe problems leading to a very short life or huge disabilities, I think the woman probably SHOULD have an abortion.

In most cases when the mother's health is not at high risk, I think it's wrong to have an abortion, and this includes cases of unwanted pregnancies caused by accident, rape, or incest. No matter how the baby got there, once it has been conceived its life is as valuable as another life, and to abort the life is murder, in my opinion.

Abortion to me means that it's that woman's choice on whether or not she should have one. A friend of mine had one, and I was right there standing by her side. She already had two kids and was barely making it, so abortion was her only option, and I respected that. When you go into a clinic its like a waiting room full of silence.I mean you hear people whispering to each other, but it feels cold. It takes about three hours of waiting and you go through some pschologists trying to ask you if this is what you really want to do, until it's time to go and do it. So that whole time your sitting there no telling what was going on in her mind. It was the longest three hours I have ever been through. I tried to keep conversation up and her mind off of thinking about it but you can't keep it out your mind because you are there, and you see others around you in the same situation. My bestfriend said that it was the hardest thing that she ever had to experience. I feel like if it's the only option for you then nobody should stop you.

I think that abortion is not right for the most part because it is misused a lot. So many women have them because they didn't plan on having a baby, they don't have the money, or they don't have enough time for a child. All of these reasons for some abortions can be solved. They could put the baby up for adoption. Oh, and not many people plan on having children at an exact time in their lives, so why take an innocent life for that? Several people are too irresponsible, when they should know how to prevent pregnancy. I think that probably the only way an abortion should happen is if the baby is dying and can not be saved and the mother could die without the abortion. Abortion is murder to me and I really do not think it's right.
