Worldwide School Shootings

Did you know that from 1996 to 2007 there have been fifty worldwide school shootings? Why have school shootings become so common over the past eleven years? What are the causes of school shootings in your opinion? What can we do to prevent future school shootings worldwide?

Honest to God, I don't know what causes school shootings. I mean some could argue a bad homelife or bullying, but bullying has always been around, there are millions of people with bad home lives. So in that sense, I think people use those excuses to justify these actions. And they don't. I think the reason that things have gotten so bad lately, is just a shift and decline in morals and values. People are spending less time with families, there is more garbage on t.v. and on the radio. The world has gotten so desensitized by violence that it is almost socially acceptable. I mean we watch it all the time in the news. It's terrible things these school shootings, but they shock and awe like they should. I feel like maybe these kids are seeking notoriety or some sort of acknowledgment. I dunno that is just my take.

There has actually been a decrease in school violence and homicides, however, multiple school shootings have increased. It only seems like school shootings have increased so much because the victims are no longer inner city children. The multiple school shootings have taken place in "higher class" schools and have caused the media and middle class to bulk. They all look for a patsy, something to blame other than theirselves.
I think the reason for school shootings can be linked back to parents and society. Children today lack discipline and respect. They become selfish people that believe the world is to blame for their mistakes and that they should be handed everything. They take no responsibility for their actions or future. Our society has also shifted away from children standing up for theirselves and showing any aggresion. If a bully was harrasing you, you where encouraged to stand up to him and beat him down. Now children are supposed to talk with the bully and become his "friend." I believe that is what europe tried to do with Hitler, and we know how that ended. I think we should be teaching children how to deal with problems, respect, responsibility, and a sense of honor.

School shootings have increased because of the rules that schools now have. The newer rules of no fighting or arguments at all has actually hurt kids growing up. A natural thing for two boys who are arguing is to have a little fist fight, make-up, and get over it. Now kids get in trouble or suspended from school for getting into these little tussles. Because of this, the kids' anger just builds up until they can no longer take it, and then they take extreme measures, such as shooting up a school.

I do not know why they have become so common. What would provoke someone to go in and shoot kids or someones babies i really dunno. I think that is between them and God. Studies say its starts with a bad home life, bullying at school, picked on. None of this stuff is new to this world and there was never any other problems like this before. It could be the video games kids play now but maybe not. I am not a firm believer on that, that is just what they are saying. Come on really can a video game really cause a Va. Tech, or any other shootings,, maybe maybe not. Can you really prevent the inevitable. I do not think this will every be prevented. Shootings are just going up and up. I think it should be harder to get a gun in the states and maybe that might help. But you really cant prevent it, at least i do not feel like you really can.

Fifty is a small number when you are comparing it to the world. When you add the word shooting to it, the number, in my eyes, becomes a lot bigger. The only reason I see that the shootings happened was because we have trouble teenagers and adults that don't now how to express their feelings when they need to.
I also think that if ALL parents and teachers would help with putting a stop to the bulling, that would take some of it down. The people who have done the shootings, to my knoledge, have been people in the lower class. If everyone would stop making money out to be the top thing on their list, maybe the world would be a better place. Everyone also needs to stop looking at the cover and open the book and find out what is on the end side. Just because someone does not dress in the name brand clothes or has clothes with holes in them does not mean that they are not worth your time.

I did not realize there had been that many school shootings in the past eleven years. It is scary to think about because you don't know how many have actually been planned and not gone through with. I think that school shootings have become more common over this time span because they want to rebel against classmates, teachers and the world. Maybe they just want to be noticed? I think that in order for school shootings to stop, we need to heighten security around schools. I know metal detectors can be a hassle for both schools and students, but we need to keep schools safe and that is the only way I know how.

No, I had no idea how many school shootings there were in the last ten years, but I also don't know how many there were in the prevoius ten years. I think there are two main reasons for the number of school shootings today. The first, and most important reason is because of the publicity that has been given to the shooters in the last 15 years or so. Kids have always been picked on in school and they have always had access to weapons, but until the last 15 or 20 years the shooters didn't get their name and face on national TV. I believe the kids have seen how much publicity they will get and want to be famous. The other reason I see for an increase in school shootings is a lack of family guidence. I think there are more and more parents who have no idea what their children are doing. I think we need to stop making school shooters famous. I think the news should say who was shot and where, but I don't think they should mention the name of the shooter or show their picture on the TV.

I honesty had no idea but if you look at that percentage is small in the big picture. What has this world come too?
Maybe they've either came from a broken home or the kids now a days are so spoiled rotten they get everything that they've ever wanted and if for some reason something doesn't go there way they just lose there minds. Perhaps they've been bullied its hard to say.
It also doesn't help that families now a days are to busy to sit down and eat dinner together. To sit down and discuss there days and act like normal families should. Instead we are all eating on the run and watching all these violent television programs. Just plain to busy for it all.

I believe we need to watch less t.v.and more importantly talk to each other more often. Keep those good morals and values in check with in your household. I also think families need to get back into the church activities.
We need to teach all of our children to be respectful, and responsible individuals before we let them go into society.

I think schools at higher risk for shootings should have metal detectors in the entry ways, and maybe only have a few different ways to get into the school unlocked, with security. I grew up in a small town so I never really had to worry about going to school and never going home because I had been shot in the face during recess for jumping rope the wrong way, but my best friend growing up lived in a bigger city and when I would go to visit her we'd always have something that had happened at her school to talk about. Lock downs. Locker searches. Police dogs sniffing the hall ways. Then we thought that it was a lack of privacy, but now being more mature, and having young family members in school, I thank the schools for doing things like that. I never want to get a call that my seven year old nephew won't be getting off the bus today because he was shot by some lunatic with mommy problems.

In my opinion i feel that since the first school shooting happened that other kids have turned to it, thinking that it was the best way to deal with the problems they had with the people at the school at the time. a good portion of the shootings that happen in my opinion are caused by people picking on and making fun of others that arent like them, then the person thats picked on takes it for so long that they get fed up with it to the point that they are willing to kill the other persons that were picking on them. The only way to prevent school shootings worlwide is to get rid of the "clicks" in shcool. that would help make every one equal that and make it so that no one would every say anything hateful or mean to anyone else.

I don't know the true, logically reasoning for school shootings, but I do think the kids who perform them don't have a great homelife. What would make someone want to bring a gun to school and cause such chaos? I think they're begging for attention, and just want people to notice to them. Maybe they aren't getting the attention they need at home, and they feel like they need to something out of the ordinary to get regonition. Maybe if parents would spend more time with children and teach them disipline regarding what's right and wrong school shootings would decrease. We will never know what causes someone to perform such an outrageous stunt. The answer remains unknown to me as why people have the nerve to perform school shootings.

Have they really become so common or have we just been looking at things differently? I don't really think things are fundamentaly different than they've ever been. Maybe because there seems to be no hope left for this generation. We have no identity or culture left in this country which leaves us even more apathetic. We saw how the generation of the 60's really didn't change things and they had a boatload of hope. Apathy, that's it! Apathy killed the kid. What can we do? NOTHING.

School shootings have become more common because kids are acting out more than ever. More and more parents work and less and home to watch after their children. More divorces are happening, so more families are breaking up. What is there to encourage children to be happy? Most children anymore do not embrace their faith and let god help them through hardships, they just rebel. Whether it is stealing, drinking, smoking, or having sex, the end result is the same: kids falling into the path of darkness. How does one come back from it? I think the the answer is to quit making excuses, quit blamming others by shooting them (ex. school shootings), but find a way to fix the actual problem. Don't try to take the easy way out becuase like school shootings, it doesn't solve anything. In order for rebelious acts to stop, kids need to find a way to fix the problems themselves or find a way to cope with the problem that does not include hurting others. Timothy Swan

I was not aware that there were fifty worldwide school shootings. NOT AT ALL!I think that school shootings have become so common because teens are having the chance to get weapons. Many teens don't understand that you can solve problems without violence, also. There could be mental instabilities that go along with it, but I can not honestly say because I've never been, or known anyone in that situation. I think if there were metal detectors or actual security or police officers in the school it would help control the guns in school. It would also help if we had laws in the United States banning guns.

I think that school shootings have become so common because there is more stress put on kids. All of this stress builds up and finally the child busts and can't handle it anymore and takes out all of his anger in the form of violence. Children are put under a lot of stress and pressure these days to perform in school and to try to fit in with people. It seems kids are more worried about what people think about them and worried about whether or not people will accept them as they are. Usually the kids that don't fit in with the cool crowd are picked on and are bullied. One thing that most of the school shootings have in common are that most of the kids are bullied and are picked on by other kids. I think that bullying has a lot to do with kids bringing guns to school and shooting other kids. In order to prevent future shootings I think that the school and faculty needs to crack down on school bullying and try to involve more kids in activities to keep them out of trouble.

I think that violence overall begins in the home. Intolerance and hate in society are just a mirror of what is taught in the home today.

English student said...

That is an eye opening fact, that i didn't know until now. I think that there are more school shootings because people are starting to be a lot meaner towards one another. This with the fact that people are becoming more stressed because they are trying to stay up with societies demands. We need to try to prevent bullying. It is a serious issue, and when someone is made fun of, it sticks with them. Even preventing bullying can not stop school shootings. I really do not know a viable way to stop the shootings; does anyone?

I think that school shootings have become more common for the simple fact that it may be easier to get a hold of the firearms that many people use in these shootings. I think that bullying is just an excuse to why these people shoot others. I did know someone though that was severly bullied as a child and has major effects from it. He was so traumatized that his parents took him out of that school because they were afraid that he would end up killing someone. So in some ways it has major effects but not in many cases.

School shootings are becomig more commomn because the kids that are being bullied are tired of it and they feel that that's the only way to get their points across. Nobody is listening or trying to understand them as a person. So they take it to the extreme. To prevent future shootings i think we should listen to our students more and give them a chance instead of always trying to disipline them. I don't think punishment is always the answer, talking the problem out can also work.

I believe that violent video games have a huge part to play in to school shootings. For example, a fellow classmate just last week brought up the subject that her four year old was at a friend's the night before. The mother let the kids play a video game where you could walk up and shoot people. Her child now points a gun and says he's going to shoot or kill when he becomes angry with someone. I also believe that the internet, family, and social parties play into this. Kids learn a lot from the internet. Maybe, parents being more intrusive than before is the best idea. I don't know.

I think years of degradation, a negative up-bringing, how violence is portrayed in the media, avid playing of violent video games, and how easy it is to get a hold of a gun in this country are the main factors that cause so many worldwide shootings. People need to watch Bowling For Columbine. I think it answers this question quite well.

I don't understand what causes peopleto kill, but there again, I've never been in that situation. I think people obviously have family problems, parent problems, and personal, mental problems. I hope I never underertand what wanting to kill someone is like. Maybe certain people drive them to be so hateful. School can be hard because kids pick on other kids, and push them so far, and hurt them so much that they finally snap.

I don't know what causes school shootings at all. There must really be something wrong with that person to make them do that sort of thing. Bullying has always and always will be a problem. Many students just want to be noticed and feel that one way to get themselves to be noticed is to cause a scene like a shooting.

I am aware that school shootings are on the rise and it is a very scary thought. It seems that the world is going to hell in a hand basket. I have three young children who attend public schools and I cringe every time I see another news report on this topic. I think that the media has a lot to do with it. So much gets reported on TV today that did not in the past. Many people who commit such obvious crimes want to be noticed. They want their ten seconds of fame. These kids are invisible to everybody, until they shoot up a school and then the whole world knows their name. Parents play a huge role in this by not seeing the warning signs of a potential problem. How do you not know that your kid is gaining access to guns? How do you not know that your kid is getting/posting information on the internet about killing people? Parents need to be more involved in their kids life. If our children are surrounded by nothing but negative things then they will not think twice about being involved in the negativity.

I beleive that the rise in school shootings has occured due to the fact that people take things so personally now a days. I mean bullies will be bullies, andnerds will be nerds. This is nothing new i just think people need to find a way to deal with their personal problems in a healthier manner. If someone or something is bothering you and it makes you want to shoot a school up maybe you should just transfer schools. There are way better alternatives then the ones being performed. Counselors need to work on being more involoved as well but i doubt most people want to go to a teacher with their problems.
