Music:The end of the World as we Know it?

Music is diverse. Rap, R&B, Rock, Metal, Country, Folk, Classical, Christian, etc. Name your favorite artist, and why. How did you get into it? Did a sibling influence you? Friends? Schoolmates? Why do you like it, and Do you apreciate other styles? Can music corrupt youth, and if you say yes, why and what kind?

I don't think music can corrupt youth, but I think its how the young ones take in the music they are listening to. For example, a kid could be listening to rap music and the rapper is talking about doing drugs and selling it. Then later on the kid starts doing the same stuff. On the other hand, some other kid listens to the same rapper, but doesn't get affected by the lyrics. You know why? Because that kid didn't let those lyrics go to his head like the other kid did. What it all comes down to in the end is how these young ones take in the music they are listening and how they are understanding it. You may even see someone listening to a rapper who deals drugs, but that doesnt he is neccessarily doing them.

My favorite artist is Eddie Vedder, but honestly, I like all sorts of music, I prefer older stuff over newer material. I think people like James Taylor and Eric Clapton had talent. It seems like anybody can get on the radio these days, even if you sing some crap song like Hey There Delila or something. I apologize for using that as an example if you honestly like that song, but I have to ask the question, why? Anyhow, I don't think that music corrupts the youth. It's just music. Some of the lyrics aren't so great but it is justt a form of expression like great artwork. Like the nudes on the ceiling of the Sistine Chapel. They might have offended the clerics and the pope, but it was just an expression, and a masterpiece at that. So who am I too say that somebody shouldn't have the right to speak freely. I say Rock On!

I like all genres of music, although there seems to be a lot of awful music out today. My mood usually determines what I listen to, it either helps me feel better or emphasizes the mood. I really enjoy listening to local and non-mainstream bands because the music seems to come across better, as if they are putting more effort into it. I grew up around several people that had taught themselves to play the guitar and sang bluegrass, and I could listen to that all year long. I like the fact that there is a story and simple instruments, not just a bunch of lyrics or pseudo rhymes that make no sense. Music can't corrupt youth. It is a form of expression allowing people to put their energy into something positive. The crowds at concerts sing along or do some form of dancing, they don't go out and terrorize or kill.

My favorite artist is George Straight. I like his music. Today i would say him and garth are about the only ones who keep it true country. I do like a variety of music ranging from rock to oldies. I played music since the fourth grade its just something that has been a part of my life since i was a little kid. I got into by my mom. Ever since i was little country music had been playing on the radio at my house or in the car on the way to the store. I like it because of the stories behind music. Some of the stories touch you in many different ways and its kind of my therapy in life. Some music can, like rap. Most of rap is about killing and all this bad things happening. I love music and realluy i feel that music helps more people than it does corrupt. I just really do not like rap, its setting a bad image for the youth today.

Blue October is by far my favorite band with Justin as my favorite artist.
I found out about Blue October in February 2004 when I went to the Canopy Club to see Better Than Ezra. At that time they only had one CD selling in stores and another one selling on their site. Now they have four CDs and two live CDs with there latest CD Plat. I like Blue October because they right their own songs and write about the bad times and the good times. Justin writes mostly about the things that he has gone through, father leaving, drugs, suicide, and love. I can relate to some of his songs because I have gone though some of the things he writes about.
I like all kids of music. If you go through my collection at home you will find country, rap, rock, classical, kids songs, musicals, and sound tracks. Depending on the mood I am in depends on the type of music I will listen too.
Any music can corrupt you if you let it. Any thing can corrupt you if you let it just to fit in with others. People need to find themselves first and be who they want to be, this day it is hard because of all of the lables out there in the world.

I do not believe that music corrupts youth at all. I have never understood that argument and maybe never will. I believe that people listen to a type of music that is representative of their personality. Their personality affects what type of music they listen to, not the other way around. My favorite artist is Kanye West. He talks about real stuff and has mice beats. I got into that type of music from my okder brother. What he would listen to on the way to school, I would have to listen to it. I can appreciate other styles.

Right now my favorite artist is rapper 50 cent. His music is very strong and gritty and gives you a rough experiences on his life. I first headr his song "Wanksta" back in 2003. I was in my highschool study hall class and some of my classmates played his song on the internet. I have never heard of him at that time, but i quickly began to love that song. I dont't believe rap music influences kids. If they decide to sell drugs or commit crimes that's there choice. I have never listened to a song and though about going out and selling drugs or committing a crime. I have alot of respect for different music. I like certain rock songs like artists U2, Kid rock, and Creed. I'll listen to any ttype of music if it has a beat or rhythm that catches my attention.

I guess I don't really have a favorite artist or group. I like most all types of music and listen to music depending on my mood more than anything else. I listen to metal or rock more than anything else, but my collection of music contains all different flavors. I don't think anybody has influenced the type of music that I listen to when I am alone, but if I am with someone who likes to listen to country I will put on country, or whatever. No, I don't think children are corrupted by music. I think most children today are corrupted by their own home environment.

My favorite artist of all time would have to be Aretha Franklin. She is an absolute classic and she is a complete legend. My grandmother got me pretty much addicted to Aretha, and I've seen her in concert about 4 times. She's AMAZING! She's very full of soul and she is very likeable. I do believe that some music with parental advisory labels and such (music with cussing and derrogatory terms) is definitely corrupting the youth. It's teaching them words that they should not know at their age.

I don't have one particular favorite type of music I like all sorts. It all depends on the type of mood that I maybe in that day whether I want to chill out by listening to jazz, blues or perhaps listen to some heavy metal. I guess the only type I really don't care for is the death metal. I do however think that death metal can in fact play a big part in corrupting are youth. I once watched a program they had on cnn about death metal affecting our teens across the world. These teens would Head out at midnight got involved with some death metal bands and were then sacrificed later on that morning by a few others friend because of the verse which were indicated in the song they had listened earlier which told them to do just that. They allowed the lyrics literally get into there head and played them out. Of course there's plenty varieties of music out there which can corrupt our youth its all how you take it in and process it all.

Music is a beautiful artistic expression which I could never live without it!

I think it is ridiculous to assume that it is music that is causing children to act like they do. Most of the 3-11 year olds that are out of control; if you want to find the culprit search their homes. And most kids over 11, you can ask their friends. I could not single my favorite music down to one artist because I live by music, it may set my mood but it does not shape a person's personality. I like mostly classic rock, and that was my moms influence, but as I grew older my friends or boyfriends had a big impact on my musical tastes. These soccer moms that came up with the idea that music corrupts our youth need to loosen up and realize that we listen to music that fits our personality, so if you are an angry person you are going to listen to angry music, and the same with calm people and calm music. So rock the fuck on guy!

My favorite band is Tool, no other band can really compare with their music. They are geniuses really...they were awarded a Technical Excellency and Creativity award for their album Lateralus. Their main idea is to open your mind and to think for yourself. Now it may sound like Tool is the only band in the world to me, but that is far from true. I was born in College Station, Tx. and I was raised on country. I moved to Illinois about 8-9 years ago and until then country was the only thing in the world to me. But once I moved I started listening to what else music had to offer. Now days country is almost a last resort, the only country music I will listen to is anything old that was put out before my move. I don't know I just haven't given it much of a chance but I don't really have to.

People say it's a good thing to have many different musical tastes. I do! I listen to classical music every morning *my alarm clock is set to go off on a classical station* and the music is amazing, it has so much feeling put in to it. I also like blues, and jazz. I went on a vacation with one of my friends and his family to go to the blues festival in Deluth, Minnesota. Two days after the blues festival me and my friend went to go see Slayer, talk about the complete other end of the spectrum. Heavy rock music always seems to have a message associated with it's songs which is why I like it so much it challenges me to think about what's happening in the song, not to mention the kick-ass guitar solos...

Another favorite band of my is Pink Floyd, it is some of the most thought-out music I've ever heard. I mean one word, Echoes... it's the most amazing song. It's a twenty-three minute oddesey that will stand the test of time as the best song by the Floyd.

I tottaly think that music can corrupt not only youth but everyone, music was made to listen to and songs are almost 99% of the time made for people so they can hear the message behind it. Some artists might put out the wrong message and it's up to you wether or not you let that message affect you.

I dont have a favorite artist, but i do have a favorite type of music, "metal". i first got into it when i was about 12 and my sisters guy friends would come over and they would listen to music. i enjoy it because it gives an outlet for all your frustration. i also listen to other kinds of music. i dont believe that music corrupts youth, its just there to listen to, every one interprets it all differently.

I think music affects the youth that don't have morals. I think that if parents provide their children with morals regarding what's right and wrong that this sort of thing wouldn't effect them. But, say a child has a bad homelife and begs for attention- then a song might influence them. I listen to all kinds of music. Rap, country, classic rock, hard rock, and R&B. I know from listenting to many different genres of music that some lyrics are very tasteful. I may listen to the song, and sing along with it, but that doesn't mean I'm going to perform the actions in which the song implied.

I don't really have favorites. I like practically everything except for rap and screaming. I think that music can corrupt the youth. The messages that some of the songs send are negative. Rap songs are especially filled with stuff that has a potential of corrupting the youth. The lyrics in some of the songs make crime sound like it's ok, that drugs are cool, etc. Many times the kids don't know what the song is actually saying, they just like the beat. However, anything has a potential of corruption. I believe that it all depends on the kid and their circumstances. Some kids let music influence their decisions, while other kids don't.

I love music. My favorite band's are white stripes, Queen, and Outkast. I got into Outkast as a teen when it was all about "pimpin ho's and slamin cadillac doors" and then I realized (as they evolved) that it was about much more than that. I think Outkast does a better job at saying something than a lot of other rap artists and I think more of the audience hears it. All of my friends were really into rap in the 90's, so I picked it up from everyone around me. I don't listen to rap much anymore but Outkast remains in my collection, the same goes for my friends too. Can music corrupt youth? Media influences people, music is just one form of that. When I hear 6yr olds singing "my humps" I think hell yes it corrupts kids, but it's not a whole lot different than everything else out there, epecially the parents that are singing it along w/them.

I think music has changed a lot from the past decades. I personally like a lot of different kinds of music. Some of my favorite artists are Patty Griffin, John McLaughlin, and The Rocket Summer. I think my brother introduced me to a lot of music that I listen to. He went to college and would come back during the summer and play these people I had never heard and I really liked them. I like music that is mellow and has lyrics that relates to me and what is going on in my life. Sometimes I really like upbeat music like The Rocket Summer for when I work out. I think some music isn't good for young kids to listen to because of the lyrics. Talking about having sex and violence is just encouraging children. I do appreciate other styles. I can handle listening to most music, but I don't enjoy listening to some. Hannah Dodd (9:00)

I am not a huge music person but I am definately a one and only country boy. I have listened to it on my way to school since I can remember. I listen to almost any artist but I do not have a favorite. I also think that music is not something that will corrupt the youth because many previous generations have grown up with some sort of tunes and have turned out all right. So, I do not blame music for the corruption of children but I do blame a lot of other things. Timothy Swan

I don't really have a favorite artist because I am a fan of just about every kind of music besides the heavy metal garbage. My parents had a lot to do with what I listen to since my mom grew up listening to country and my dad grew up listening to the 70's and 80's rock. I mostly listen to country and old rock now because I grew up listening to it. It's hard to say why I like that kind of music, mainly just because I don't like anything else. I appreciate all kinds of different styles of music because all different singers have their own unique style of singing. You have to be very gifted to be a singer and every singer deserves to be recognized. I don't think music corrupts youth because I think they just realize that it is just a bunch of words that someone just made up. I think that the music videos and all of the stories kids hear about the rappers and other artists could corrupt them since the kids look up to them.

Music might be able to influence youth, but i don't feel that it has the power to corrupt. Music is not going to make kids do things they wouldn't normally do. Some lyrics might suggest using drugs, having sex, killing people, or drinking alcohol, but just because these things are in the lyrics, doesn't mean that kids are going to do them after hearing them. Music cannot corrupt youth, it is rather a way for them to hear about people doing the already corrupt things that they are doing.

My favorite artist you have to be Gwen Stefani just because of the simple fact that she is very artisitic in everything she does and just sounds completley different from everyone else. I love many different music styles and no one really influences the music i listen to. If a friend doesnt like it then they don't like it.. it is not my problem. I think that music cannot necessarily corrupt youth, but the things they say in the music can possibly put things in younger peoples minds.

i have five brothers that all listen to rap, so that's how i got into it. I mostly like the beats in the songs. yes, i appreciate other styles i listen to everything. I think it can because young kids look up to the stars and wnat to be like them, so they do what they hear and see.

Being a musician myself, I like to listen to a lot of different kinds of music. From jazz to rock, from Celtic to ragae, from bluegrass to metal, etc., I try to find artists that I like in most every genre. I do have a personal hiearchy of artists though, and it's like this: I love tons of different artists; Eric Clapton, Sting, Muddy Waters, John Coltrain, Bob Marley, A Tribe Called Quest (the list could go on and on). However, I do set aside one artist, and I hold him, or it-we are talking about a god here, above everyone else. It's name is Jimi Hendrix, and it is the shit! For me, such creativity, both lyrically and instrumentally, remains unmatched. Don't get me wrong, there is a lot of cool music, but for me, Jimi Hendrix just stands out from all the rest. AS for music's influence on children, of course some music could have negative effects on the undeveloped mind of a child. However, this, by no means, is grounds for censorship. Artists should be able to express themselves however they want to no matter what. It is the parents' responsibility to filter out what they deem is inappropriate for their children, not the record companies'.

I don't think music corrupts people, I think other people corrupt people. I LOOOOVE music, I could not live without music. I like most all types of music. Yes, a lot of that music was influenced by my parents, my brother and sister, and friends. But I glad, it opened me up to all types of music.

I love keith urban because he writes songs about his own personal experiences and many people can relate to his songs. I used to hate country but after i went out with someone who was all about it i learned that country is my rock. It is what i will always go back to. It is about real life things and it is very easy to relate to.

I was introduced to rock music at first by my father. So naturally today that is my favorite genre of music. Although being from Atlanta i have been surrounded by a lot of the rap culture growing up and have learned to respect that as well. Most of my relatives are rednecks so i listen to country too. Overall i like all types of music. I think some music can have a negative affect on today's youth because of all the violence and drug usage promoted in a lot of today's lyrics. But overall music is a good thing and i could not live with out it.
