Too Many Drunken Athletes?

The past few years have brought many controversies about athletes drinking in high school or in college. Even though some athletes are of age to drink, it does not change the fact that they have signed training rules saying that they will oblige to certain rules. Should athletic training rules be more strongly enforced when it comes to athletes drinking underage or of age? What should the consequences be if they are caught? Even if they are the star of the team, should they still be tried as equally as everyone else or should they be given a free pass?

Thanks for your help!

Alright Blake,
This is how I feel. I think that no matter how strict the rules and regulations get, people will break them. There are laws against killing, and yet people kill. There are laws against stealing, and yet people steal. Yeah they should be held accountable for their actions, but until they get caught, there isn't anyhting that more strict rules can do. If you are the star athlete and you get caught, then you should be punished, but you don't get caught than really it's just the systems fault. It can't catch everybody, it hurts the ones that have the most to lose, whether a scholarship or parents grounding them, but it seems like the kids that don't reallly care about the team or his grades, never gets caught. How is that for a system?

The main factor here is that these athletes signed an agreement or contract. If they break the agreement then they have shown that their word means nothing and should serve whatever the punishment is and be barred from future contracts with that sport. It doesn't matter if the athlete is underage or of age, the punishment should be the same for fairness. Although, I think some sort of latitude should be given for those who come forth and admit that they were drinking.

I think that the nba influences greatly on the teen athletes today. We all look up to the Lebron James's of the world and if he is always drinking and we get this image that "o, well its cool to drink and o we can stay an star athelte while drinking too. I think that high school punishment is to harsh on drinking with the athelets. You get thrown off the team at some schools for the first offense. Way to harsh, no one is perfect and everyone makes a mistake. Maybe if this person was warned a few times and punished in a less career ending way than maybe kicking them off the team wouldnt be so bad. NBA players punishment? Well they are all adults and like to drink jusst like the rest of the adults. This society and papers just like to pick on them and point out every little mistake they make to bring a headline for the todays paper. Their punishment shoud be maybe a few dollars fine if that. Give them their warning and tell them you do it again there will be a harsher punishment and set a boundries to those next time affenders. Maybe have the three strike you are out theory like most sports do.

Tim, there is a old saying that states rules are meant to be broken. This saying applies to everyhting no matter how big or how small. If the coaching staff is unaware of these rules being broken, then they have done all they could do. They had their athletes promise not to do certain things and it is the athlete's responsiblity to honor their word. The coaching staff can't enforce rules anymore than that in my mind. They can't follow them around or lo-jack their car so they always know where they're at. Every athlete, no matter how gifted, needs to be treated the same. No one is above the law and they need to be shown that.

No one should get a free pass. However, I think it would be a blaintant invasion of privacy if athletes were to be consistantly drug and alcohol tested. And if someone's an amazing player, personally, I wouldn't care that much if he/she was enjoying a couple of beers on the weekends. If it seemed to be hindering their performance, that would be another story. Athletes should of course always be conscious of their health, as should everyone, but they should also be allowed to live a little.

Does it even matter because these athletes are still going to go out and drink and get drunk. Even if the organization does enforce stronger rules it still won't change the fact that atletes are going to find ways to have their way and drink. If a player does get caught drinking than he/she should get suspended for a few games, but nothing drastic. Same goes for the star player, but his punishment should be a little deeper because everyone looks up to him/her as their role model and wants to be just like them. These athletes should jsut be grateful for the fact that they have all this talent and skills because their are other people who want to who are grateful and don't have anything to show for it

I believe whatever the training rules are--they should be enforced. I don't think it should matter what age they are. If they are supposed to lose their scholarship, then they should lose their scholarship. If they are supposed to be kicked off the team then kick them off. I think the consequences should be whatever they were told the consequences would be when they signed the contract. There should be no "free pass" no matter who they are. A contract is a contract and everyone should be held to it equally.

Regardless of how strict the rules are enforced I still think that these athletes will go ahead and drink anyways. If its illegal to smoke pot but lots of people do it does it make then right or wrong. I think that they will continue to drink untill they are caught.
I do believe that if however you are under the age yes the rules should be strictly enforced.

If they are caught I think that they should be not allowed to play for an entire month.

Even if they are the star of the team they should be treated just like the rst of the team.

No free passes!!!!

If you are of drinking age, what the hell are you doing in high school?
No matter who you are, if you are under age and drinking, you need to be punished along with the person who bought the drinks for you.
When you become an athlete, you are representing the school or organization that you are playing for. It is not all about you any more. You have to obey by the rules when you are with a group.
The punishment for the athlete should be taken off of the team. Not sitting out for the next three games or missing practice, take them off. If you are going to be stupid and do this while on a team, there are others that would love to be in your spot that would not do that. If you try out and make it, you better do everything that you can to keep your spot and treat it as a prevaliage that can be taken away at any point in time. No matter what you do you can always be replaced.

in my opinion if the people who are caught drinking are of age, who cares, its their choice and they are old enough to do it, and if they arent hurting anyone then leave them alone. Underage persons caught drinking shouldnt be punished by the school unless they were caught at a school event or on school property, other than that the school really has no right to punish them, i mean come on if they got caught it was probably by the cops and they are in enough trouble the way it is. also i believe even if they are the star of the team they should be treated like everyone else. just cause your good at a sport doesnt mean you should get special treatment

I think that if someone signs a contract they should abide it. Training rules should be enforced. Their shouldn't be options of severity. A rule is a rule, no matter how insignificant, a person should follow it. If they're caught breaking the rule, they should be punished. For the first offence, an athlete should be benched for a few quarters. For the second, they should be benched for the entire game. And anything after that, they should get kicked off. I believe that everybody should get the same treatment. It shouldn't matter if they're the star.

No one should be given a free pass. I know nothing about sports, but I do think that if someone drinks and drives they should to be punished accordingly. I guess if you are going to be a role model of sorts you should attain to a higher standard.

I think the rules should be enforced more. It makes me really mad about athletes who drink and don't get caught. Throughout high school I know many of my teammates drank, even if they were the "star". To be honest, I wanted them to get caught. They obviously don't care about their teammates enough or their team if they are going out to party. If they are caught once, I think they should have to sit out for a few weeks as a warning. If they get caught again, they should be kicked off the team. Yes the star should be treated the same as the bench warmer. I sounds stupid that they wouldn't be treated the same, but I know that when it really comes up sometimes they aren't. They kind of hide the fact that the star was drunk or try to keep it from getting out. That makes me so mad. There was someone in high school who did it because she could get away with it. Her parents were high in the school and they wouldn't do anything. Pretty much all of the teachers knew she drank, but she NEVER got in trouble. Her dad was the A.D. and never did anything about it because sports is so important.

I don't think it's right for athletes to drink. They are required to sign a contract that states if they are found drinking, they will be punished. I think if they are found drinking, it's only fair for them to punished. I think that atheletes get away with to much just because they're famous. They should be treated like everyone else. If they break the law, they should be punished regardless of their reputation. Some athletes just don't care, and I think signing a little piece of paper just doesn't cut it. I think something more intense needs to be done so that atheletes don't get off easy when it comes to drinking.

I think that athletes are normal people and if they want to get drunk in their own time so be it. As long as they aren't out running people over and all of that non since like what has been happening it shouldn't really matter. maybe on the night before a game they shouldn't be drinking, but it isn't really fair to tell them they can't drink or party because they play a sport.. if someone told me not to do something it would probably make me want to do it even more. that's probably why there's so much in the new about athlete's being drunk and fighting or drunk driving because when non athlete's do it it isn't important but when they do it's some big deal.. leave them alone. as long as they're of age why should it matter..

I can definitely relate to this drunken athlete blog. My freshman year in highschool, one of the boys in a family that I am really close to got alcohol poisioning at a party. Being a part in the athletic program at school, we heard the story straight from the source, the guy, Christian Cortez. Christian was an all-american athlete, starting lineup on each sport he did; basketball, football, and baseball. He was so amazing. However, at the beginning of the season, everyone signs the high school's code of conduct which strictly prohibts any kind of alcohol. I don't really think there's much that can be done about enforcing it more then it is already enforced. If the kids get caught drinking, they're out for at least 1/3 of the season. And if they want to do it, they will. I definitely believe that being a star of the team everyone expected Christian, as well as four other boys caught, to be given a free ride. But that was definitely NOT the case. They were benched for our homecoming game and a bunch more. That ended up being one of the worst football seasons we'd ever had, but they had to pay the price.

It is illegal and they should be prosecuted. Maybe if we stopped the slap on the wrist attitude towards these people, maybe it would do something toward prevention!

This was a very big controversy at my high school the past couple years. There would always be people arguing because it seemed the athletes would always not get in trouble for drinking and all the other non athletes would complain saying they should. I understand that as an athlete you sign an athletic agreement saying you will stay away from drugs and alcohol but it's high school and the athletes will drink. I knew that was the case because we would go out just about every weekend. We never got caught because we were careful about who we drank with and where we drank. I don't think that just because you are an athlete the rules should be more strongly enforced. You should be treated just like everyone else and the consequences should be all the same. Just because you are a star athlete on the team doesn't mean you should be treated any different either as you should be given the same punishment. This will still be a controversy for years to come.

Do you want to have any athletes? Because if you do, then there should be no stronger enforcement to the training rules. Players are going to go out and drink, especially if they are in college. It's college people, and if an athlete wants to drink then let them. As long as they are not doing anything stupid and getting in trouble, then it should be alright. If they do something stupid while they are drinking then lay the hammer on them, but if they just want to drink some beers after the game or whenever, let them.

I think to strongly enforce the drinking they should have a weekly test to catch atheletes off guard. It needs to be strongly because if you have one person on a sports team drinking and everyone is not, it hurts the team. The person that drinks affetcs the whole teams performance and thats not fair to them. I think the first time you get caught you should be suspended for two games, second time four games and the third time you should be suspended for the entire season. It doesn't matter if there the star of the team or a athelete that never plays, the rules apply for everyone. You can't give your star player a free pass becuase you will lose the teams trust and they no longer believe in a program if everybody is treated equally.

I think that if the athlete is of age that they should be able to use their right of being able to drink. I also think that for those athletes you should not be able to have a drink withing 24hrs. of a game just to insure that an athlete will not show up to a game totally smashed. I think that the punishment for underage drinkers should be the same for everyone on the team.

I think that if you are in high school and get caught drinking, you should be punished according to the rules that your team or coach has set up, regardless if you are the star or not. That being said, I don't think that making harsher penalties will result in less drinking from these athletes. Let's face it, the majority of athletes in high school just play a particular sport for fun, and drinking on the weekends is sometimes just as important. They are not going to stop just in fear of getting caught because they know that playing a sport is not their top priority.

Training rules should be more enforced. They should be suspended for the rest of the season. That would teach them to follow the rules. of course they should be treated like everybody else on the team, they don't deserve special treatment.

I don't know anything about sports, so I don;t know the rules enforced. I, of course, believe that they should be treated as equally as everyone else. They signed a contract, and if you breech a contract its over. If this isn't being enforced, maybe it should be.

Athletic training rules should be more strongly enforced when it comes to athletes drinking underage or of age even. If they are caught doing wrong, they should be kicked off the team. Everyone on the team should have the exact same rules and punishments so even the star athlete should be punished.

I think that everyone should be trated equily no matter what. But i think that as long as the person is of age to drink then they should be able to do so, as long as they don't do it the night before a game or practice. If they go out on a weekend and have a few beers then i don't see anything wrong with that. Its their choice. I do think that if they sign a contract then it is their responsability for them to follow it. The contract should also say the conciquences so that when the athlete signs the contract then they know exactly what happens if they break it.
