College or Career

Do you feel it's better to go to college or start an career? With so much competition in the work force, is college the better choice? What if your family needs your financial support right away? What if you don't have the money to cover both school and living expenses? Does a college degree guarantee you more money? In your own opinion, do you suggest college after high school or entering a career? Do you believe that people who choose college will be better off in life in the future? Why or why not? Is it possible to succeed in our society without a college degree or certification in a specific area? Any other thoughts on this subject?

I think its smarter to go to college before you start looking for a lifetime career. It's hands down the smartest decision in my opinion, you make so much more money by going to school even if your only getting your associates.I do think that in the future going to school helps people with the job they have and how much money there making. It is possible for people to be successful without getting or going to college, but it isnt very often. People that usually go to careers straight after college often can get higher up jobs that pay better money because they don't have the education it needs to become it. Even if people do need to help there families right straight after high school, i think they should do everything they can to try to get some college in so they can get better jobs and help their families out even more.

For me I believe that going to college and maybe having a part time job, if possible would be the way to go, because the more education you have the less you will have to settle for as far as picking a job.

Most definitely, college is the better choice, especially, because of the competition in the workforce. There are so many people in the workforce that are struggling because they "just have the standard GED or high school diploma," and there are so many kids and adults that have realized that if they want to live without struggling to just pay their rent, they have to increase their salary and the ultimate way to do that would be to increase your knowledge by attending school.

If your family needs for you to get a job right away, maybe you can get a part time job and go full time to college or a full time job and go part time to school. In my situation I chose the latter.

If you do not have the money to cover school and living expenses that maybe you can try getting a Pell Grant or a student loan, in the end it would be worth it.

There is no guarantee that you would get a job because of a college degree, but I believe that you have a better chance of getting one with it and it also depends on what you are going to school.

In my opinion, I suggest that if you can go to college after school, but have a plan, pick a career for yourself and pursue it.

Yes, I believe that people that have degrees will be better off in the future. Why, because of the increase in technology, mental illness, drugs and alcohol, sports, etc. There is an increase in certain fields that will not stop.

Anything is possible, because I work for a mental health agency and I do not, have a degree yet, but that's why I am in school to obtain one. I have been in my job for almost five years and it is not just a job to me it is a career, so I made the choice to go back to school to get better at my craft.

If you have not decided what career you are interested in take the time to think about it and once you decide pursue it with all you have.

In my opinion, I would say that it depends on your life situation. If you’re a single parent, sometimes you can't go to college first, do to your financial situation. As for college being the better choice to do first in a competitive workforce, I would say yes, because then you'll have the advantage over those who don't have a degree. Business that you can make a career out of, look for the college background, these are the people that they want. These days one really need some type of college background if they want a descent paying job. No you I don't feel you have to have a college degree or certificate to make it in the world, because there are a lot of successful people who made it without a degree. it'll just be harder to do, but if that person is determined, and have the will, I feel anything is possible once you put your mind to it.

‘Is it possible to succeed in our society without a college degree or certification in a specific area?’ – Yes, in rare cases. You do occasionally hear the inspirational story of an entry level position being promoted to higher ranks, but with the falling levels of US high school education, I’m not confident in saying that a person is ready to enter the world of work after graduating. A college degree doesn’t necessarily lead to being ‘better off in life in the future’, but it sure does give you a better platform to step off. If you ‘don’t have the money to cover both school and living expenses’, then there is financial aid available to help you. If that means being in debt to begin with – then so be it.

‘Bill Gates never graduated college, look at him’ – it is this type of false inspiration that sets young adults up to fail. Knowledge is power, and if you don’t acquire it, then you are behind. I understand that everyone is different, and there are many different talents out there. For that reason, conventional education may not be for everyone, but I urge young adults to make more informed decisions on college. Attending higher education doesn’t necessarily mean that you should pursue academia; there are also a number of vocational degrees out there that will set a person apart when entering the world of work.

That is a great question, and hard one to answer. In the case of not enough money,i get that, but there are ways to receive help. I think you really have to sacrifice to be able to go to school and work. Maybe working in the job market with your intended carer would be a good way to start, then decided if that is what you want to go to school for. Yes i think you can make a future without college. Look at how many people have graduated and cant get a job now.

Definitely not everyone should go. It would be nice if all kids leaving high school (or even all young adults) knew what they wanted to do, but how many have a clear path mapped out in their heads? I think the ones who were always the high achievers in school may be more inclined to know what degree they'd like to earn, and so would be more likely to be successful in university. But for some, it's simply not the best route to success. Many people are successful in trades (apprenticeships) or other one or two-year programs offered in technical schools, and often these people go on to build their own business. Also, I think it's still possible to do well with only a high school diploma if you choose a good company to work for, start at the entry level and just work hard.

I think it is smarter tog o to college before starting a career right off the bat. I think it is smarter to go to college because that career that you have at the moment may not last forever and a back up plan would come in handy if that were to happen. Some people can find good high paying jobs without having a college degree which is neat but that is very rare. I think that people should at least give college a shot before rushing into a career because one day they may be sorry that they did not go to college.

I thinks its smarter to go to college before you start looking for a career. In my opinion it’s the smarter way to go. You would make so much more money by going to college then just having a high school diploma. It looks better to jobs if you went to college; it helps you get better jobs. Imp not saying people haven’t succeeded by not going to college but today, it’s not very often. The more education you have, the less you will have to settle for in picking a job. It leaves the door wide open for many fields.

Being a college student, I believe that it is very important to graduate from college before you look for a career. College, although expensive, has benefits in the long run. College students have the ability to become more educated in what they truly want to do with their lives. College degrees are also more impressive to future employers and you are more likely to receive a higher paying job. College also demonstrates perserverence and determination. An employer will generally be more impressed with you if you took the time and money needed to become more educated in your field, rather than not going to college and wanting instant gratification.
On the other hand, there are some types of jobs that don't necessarily require a college degree. If you truly believe that the career that is destined for you doesn't require a college degree, then no. You should not waste your money trying to get a degree. A college degree is safer than just starting a career because if you start a career and realize that it's not for you, you will have to end up going to college. If you go to college from the start, then you won't have to worry AS MUCH about getting a decently paid job.

I believe it is better to go to college because most kids have no idea what they want to do. So then they can go to school and figure out what they want to do. With the competition in the work force now, you need to go to college so your not just through to the bottom of the interview pile.

With your family needing your financial support right away is a different situation because college shouldn't even cross your mind then. You should go straight to work and help your family out.

If you don't have enough money for both school and living expenses you should take as many loans out as you can. Even a college degree can't guarantee you more pay, but can guarantee you a better shot of getting a job then someone who doesn't have a college degree.

In my own opinion i think you should suggest college after high school and work towards your degree. I think people who choose college first have a better shot at being successful.

I feel that if you know what you are doing with your life and know what you want a degree in and what job you are going to get then college is defiantly the choice, but if you are just going to college just for partying or just social activities then you are just wasting money. I think less people should go to college and more people should learn skills and how to make things. we need more people in our country making things for us. there is no shame in not going to college right after highschool.if you have a skill and are good at it, you can make a lot of money and have a long career doing it. Making money and working are both very important things. we need more people working in this country and less people with the same college degrees and we need way less people paying student loans.

I think that depends on the person and the persons oppurtunits. College sometimes can be the better choice but sometimes it can not be the best choice. If your family needs you then going into a career right away would be better than trying to struggle through college. If you can't afford theres no reason to rush school you can always go back once you are financially straight. No a college education doesn't gaurntee anything, thats why you have to be careful when trying to decide a career, you need to take the job outlook into consideration. If you don't have a good job oppurtunity and can afford i feel like college is the better option. I think how hard you work will determine your future not just your college education. Yes you can suceed in certain asbects in todays society as long as you do things right and work hard. Working hard is the number one thing in trying to suceed.

I believe that college after high school is a good idea because it does give you that advantage in trying to get a job. People who have college degrees have a higher chance of getting a job than someone who doesn’t. There are those who can afford to go to college and pay of living expenses at the same time. A college degree does not always guarantee you a better pay that a non-college graduate. There are a lot of things to consider when it comes to getting a college degree and some people can’t always afford to attend college. Some people have to take out student loans in order to attend college.

Honestly, It all depends on what you want to do in the future. Some people do not have to go to college in order to start their career. I think personally, it is better if you have that back up on your resume that you can put on their that you have a business degree. You can always be a full time student and work part time. I think a lot of people have financial aide that don't need it as much as other people. And then there are those people who really need it but, cant get it. I do not think one is better off going to college over starting a career right out of high school. I started college right after high school and am a full time student and working part time as well, but my boyfriend moved here he went to working full time and has to pay tons of bills and is doing just fine. He can start his career right now if he wanted to and make up to 6 digit figures in the next 2 two without even having any type of college degree. This is why I think that it all depends on what you are wanting to do for the future and also what connection you have with people. College may not be for everyone and some people do just fine without it.

It just depends, I think you should go to college, but if you have a good job that pays why give that up Yes, it might be money but you could make twice as much. You can still go to school and provide for your family at the same time. There are ways were you can go to school, and ways to pay for it. No, it does not always guarantee you more money, but it also depends what you are going for also. Individuals should start college as soon as they get out of high school. It is really good to have a college degree or some sort cause it really does help you out in life in the long run.

i always thought it was better (and easier) to go to college after high school and then have a career. BUT, i learned that that is not always true. college is not for every one, and even if you do have a college degree, u are not guaranteed a job. i know people who have degrees, and they are still looking for work, way after graduation. i think it will be a better choice for me, because i like to learn, and i cant just up and get a job in the field i want without having a college education. i was working a pt time job and going to college last semester, and it was hard. i was always tired, and i began to slack. i told myself this semester i would focus more on my school work. i can find a job in the summer or something, but i cant (and i wont) put my college education on hold again.
