The Supreme Court recently ruled that the constitutional right to gun ownership applies nationwide. This ruling came in response to a court case challenging the gun bans in the Illinois city of Chicago and Oak Park, one of the suburbs there. Chicago Mayor, Richard M. Daley, has promised to soon push for a new ordinance regulating handguns in the city in spite of the Supreme Court decision.
What are your thoughts on the Constitutional right to bear arms? Should common citizens in fact retain this right? Should registration of firearms be required? Should the ‘right to carry’ provisions be expanded or encouraged? Should handguns have different rules than other firearms?
Should assault weapons be allowed? What about enforcement against illegal arms possession?
The Supreme Court decision opens a vast can of opinion. Explain how you feel about this decision.

I think that there should not be a ban because there will be more robberies if these robbers know that people can have guns anymore. We need guns to protect ourselves. All hand guns just need to be registered, but i think that we difinately need them for protection.

I do not believe that carrying a handgun should be required. I could see the right to carry weapons going both ways. I believe that because more people are allowed to carry a gun, then deaths and crime rates could go down. But at the same time, I could see it falling the other way and crime and death rates go up. If the decision is made to make it legal for people to carry handguns, the laws and punishments should become very strict and tight, by maybe extending jail time or bumping up fines for misuse of your firearm.

I don't think there should be a ban and the person in chicago is an idiot. The only thought I disagree with is how stupidly easy it is to get a FOID card and how easy it is to get a fire arm. I believe if they had to be registered it would solve a lot of problems but that's about it for this.

I believe that everyone has the right to bare arms, though I believe there should should be background checks on all the people who own one. that way it is safer for everyone.
Yes I think registration to bare fire arms is a great idea that way it will be safer for us in the long run.
I wouldn't say it needs any help with that, for their is enough of that already with out more help being needed.

i think people have the right to have guns. its for protection, some people need them to stay alive. and making it so every person has to have a registered gun is just a dream. people get their things illegally sometimes and they like it that way. its not going to change, no matter what they pass or whether or not they even have a right to pass it (which i dont think they do) doesnt matter, people are going to do what they want and get what they want no matter what. look how prohibition worked out
I think that someone should have to take a special class to be able to carry a gun, just like we have to do to be able to drive a car.

I think there should be a ban to a certain point. You can't ban all guns because hunters will be very mad and will have a huge problem with it. Its not fair to them if they have guns for hunting and thats it and then other have hang guns and shot guns. I think that hunters can have guns just not ordianry people they should have a bigger restriction to them.

I think they should be very strict on rules and regulation to whom ever is trying to register or buy a gun. Like if they have any criminal report or if they have a restraining order against them. If they have a clean criminal record, then i don't see why not. Of course the person buying the gun should take a course on shooting and positioning on the gun they are buying. And it isn't necessary for a person to take the gun into public, unless you are a police officer or guard. If they buy a gun, it should stay at the persons house and be used for protection only. If they want to do target practice, they should go to the shooting range where everyone will be safe, not in their back yard where people that you don't even see could get hurt. If they miss the target, the bullet will keep going, whereas at the range, it won't won't go far.

I am generally against handguns as I see them as being designed primarily to be used against other human beings. For some this is actually what they want, because they feel they need their guns for protection. I see the original right to bear arms as giving the private citizen some level of protection against an overbearing government. For this kind of combat rifles would generally be preferred. Thus, I am in favor of people being allowed to own rifles and shotguns (sporting purposes) but less so handguns.
That said, as long as it is legal, I think anyone should be allowed to own a gun. I do think that people who own guns should be issued a license, and to get that license I feel people should be required to take a safety course, just like with vehicles. Every police officer and military member is given a safety course in firearms before they are issued any kind of weapon. They are supposed to know by rote and heart the safety rules and any rules of when they may use their firearms. I don't see why private citizens can't be expected to show some level of responsibility before they are allowed to own a device which it's sole purpose is designed to take the life of another human being.

I have very mixed feelings when it comes to owning guns, on one hand guys can be used to protect yourself against robberies and other things like that, but on the other hand; guns kill millions of people a year that have done nothing wrong. But the 2nd amendment does state that you have a right to bear arms and there for it is unlawful for there to be a ban on them. I personally don’t think that I will ever own a gun, because they scare me. But people do have the right to.

I know that many people like the fact of the right to bare arms because they feel that its away to protect themselves. For example, if you are at home and someone cames in and tried to attack you or your family while you all are asleep, you would probably reach for your gun before you try to call 911 for help. I guess it allows a person to feel secure and know that if someone did try to cause harm to them they have some "heat" for them. We must realize that guns used in the wrong way take lives and leave wounds that are hard to heal.

the rights to bear arm gives many to the opportiunty to have a gun. some people wpuld take advantage if the fact that they can get they can have a gun they would try to even use it to scare others or try to show off how cool they are. im not against the rights to bear arm i just think that it would be more easier now for any one to have a gun.

there is no reason to have a ban. it isn't the guns fault it was used in a deadly shooting, it's the holders fault. The gun doesn't have a mind of its oun, its our minds that control it.

I do not think that hand guns should have a different rules. I look at gun bans as a way of empowering the bad guys. the question I ask is this Why are they called bad guys? Is it because they don't follow the rules? Is it because they do things that "normal" people don't? The win in this case by the supreme court I think was huge. I have three friends that are cops now and all of them tell me the same thing. I wish we could have gotten there a little faster. The right to bare arms is the right to defend yourself. The day we stop defending ourselves is the day crime starts to take us over.
The world is very crazy today. I think a person should have a right to protect his or her family. The thing with Mayor Daley in Chicago is, that so many kids are getting a hold to these guns and killing one another. Over the pass couple of years they have had alot of death of high school student do to fact that another child has done the shooting. In Chicago, a high student got on the bus, one that is a main line for students and open fire, killing another student. Where are they getting these gun from? Daley is not tring to violate people rights , he is trying to save children lives. There is a handgun issue in Chicago, which has claim the lives of so many children. It was reported in 2008 that 58 deaths of children over a 17 month period, which averaged 1 child every 8 days. I feel a decision need to be made, where people can still protect themselves but get a contol over childrens' death by handguns, whatever that decision maybe.

A ban on guns would be a huge mistaken on our part because guns are what protect our family's. If we ban guns the crime rates would sky rocket, people who normally wouldn't rob a convenient store, might just try it out. especially if they know we cant own a gun, to protect ourselves. if they do any thing they need to just clean up the streets of all the unregistered gun
I believe that there should not be a gun ban because with out guns criminals would own the street. what we need is gun control, we need to first relive the streets of all unregistered firearms. Secondly we need to set regulations and laws for selling of fire arms, even if someone wanted to sell a gun to their brother they should have to send in some paper work or something of that nature. I think that we could do more intensive background checks to aid in keeping bad people from buying a gun from a store, but you have to fill out a bunch of information to get your FOID card and then again when you are buying a firearm. so i believe there shouldn't be a bun ban but we do need to enforce more striked guidelines and laws.
