Cell Phones

Illinois is one of the 24 states to have a law against texting while driving. Should we make texting while driving illegal in all states? Should we make a law in all states against using a cell while driving? We hear more and more each day about people having accidents, or causing accidents that take the lives of others, due to using a cell phone while driving. What can we do better to convince people of all ages that using a cell phone while driving is dangerous? How would it affect you or your family if you or someone in your family killed someone while talking or texting on a cell phone?

I feel if you are stupid enough to get into a car wreck over a text from a cell phone then you should be penalized. It's not that hard to pull over and finish or answer it when you are not driving.

I think that no matter how strict you make the laws, people are going to disobey them. Texting is the biggest thing now in all ages. Cell phones are now coming out with voice activated texts now, which means you can talk and it writes it for you. I think this will lower the amount of how many people text while driving but it wont eliminate it. No matter how hard we try to stop this from happening i feel like it will never happen. Just like talking on your cell phone is illegal, everyone still does it and has been doing it for a very long time. The only way to learn is the hard way unfortunately on this one. I believe that the only way someone will stop texting and driving is if a traumatic experience comes from it.

Texting while driving is a dangerous thing. People are crazy drivers as it is, and texting while driving and not focusing on the road and what is going on around them does not help to the situation. Test have been done to see if people's driving skills decline when they are texting and driving, and sure enough it proved true. I believe that it should be illegal in all states because it is not only a life threat to the person driving, but also to everyone else around. Trying to convince people to stop texting and driving is a hard task to accomplish because so many people do it and have been doing it for a while, and more than likely will not stop. One alternate to texting is to just simply hold a conversation over the phone with someone.

Texting while driving is really stupid. There is no way to both read and drive a car at the same time. Talking on a cell phone in a school zone while school is in session is also illegal. I can see not being able to talk on a phone in a big city where traffic is really heavy, but where there is really very little traffic I wouldn't understand why talking on the phone should be band. I get the school zone, and the no texting, and the "hands free only" in cities, but just talking on the phone while driving has kind of become a habit for most people. It's kind of like putting on make up in the car while driving--not the best idea, but it still happens.

It would take something serious to effect my whole family I believe for them to have a strong opinion on this topic. Personally I think while in the city we shouldn't be able to use our phones since the longest trip we're gonna take 15-20mins across town, if it's really important to text your girlfriend "<3u2" you probably don't need to be driving too much anyways. So in city no cell phones out of city yes since you're going in a straight line for most the part.

I think texting is very dangerous while driving, even though I do it myself. It is a distraction that takes away from your vision and slows down your reaction time. On the contrary I do not believe there should be a law against it. I say this because it is equally dangerous to eat fast food while you drive or to look for a song to change to on your ipod while it is hooked up to your car. I see women putting on makeup and men with electric shaver while driving, so people are always going to find some dangerous way to multi-task. I think texting is just being singled out right now because it is a hot topic that everyone loves to do.

I feel that every state should have the same law with cell phones. Its not fair that only a couple of states have the law. Even though its a law no body follows it. I'm also one who text when i drive, i know its not smart to do because it can cause you to wreck and get into bad accidents. I just think when your driving you should either put your phone away or turn it down or on vibrate so you can't hear nor answer it. To prove how bad it could be is to see the accidents kids, parents have been in either from texting or just talking on the phone and not paying attention.

i dont think its really that big of a deal. if it wasnt texting it would be something else distracting the driver. you cant take away the radio and people in the car so why try saying you arent allowed to text or use your phone? if it wasnt this itd just be something else, and it wouldnt hurt my family more if someone we loved got hit by a driver texting then if it was just a regular car accident like a drunk driver. its just as bad no matter the cause. sam tomson

I think we should make it illegal in all states. So many people have died over something that could have waited a few more minutes. I don't think most people will realise it until it happens to someone in their family or a friend. My brother started texting while driving while i was in the car and i immediately told him to put his phone away. If anyone who is driving and texting while i'm there i will tell them to put their phones away. I don't see why i should be at risk. Or even if the hit someone who was innocent because of them using their phones. They should be more strict on the road with people using phones. Instead of us paying more taxes, let them pay more as punishment. If someone hit one of my family members when texting, i will sue the hell out of them!!

Texting while driving is the equivalent to reading a book or newspaper while driving. Sound like something you would do? Probably not. While it is true that people find many ways to multi-task while driving, texting demands focus and attention; First, to read the small screens, which are often hard see in the sunlight, and additionally to type replies, especially with the limited button phones or the ones that need two hands to use.

Believe it or not, there were times that cell phones did not exist, making us wait a few minutes to talk to each other. If the message is important, it will be there, as a text or as a voice mail, when we arrive at our destination. If there is an urgency to hear/see the message, pull off, listen & respond, don't put your life or someone else's at risk.

I do not want to ever have to drive anywhere and see another person driving, or talking , and texting on a cellphone. If they just to have conversation, then they should handle that before they start driving. Too many people out there are always in a hurry anyway ; why risk it on the open road? I know there have been too many accidents where people have ended up being investigated by the police , and found to be careless with their cellphones, but, I say that it would even be a distraction, if you eating , or drinking a beverage , or something like that even. Most people do not obey the laws , they continue to drive illegally, no matter what.Choose your punishment! Tracey Boswell

Using cell phones while you drive should be against the law. I sometimes do text while I drive, but honestly it is very distracting, because my attention went from on the road to what I’m going to type on my phone. Plus there are tons of accidents every year and even deaths from people texting and talking while they are driving. Is anything you are texting important enough that it’s worth killing someone? I didn't think so.

Yes a law should be made againt using a cell phone while driving. Its bad enough that people drive crazy, but whether talking or texting on a cell phone is even more dangerous because you are not aware of your surrounding. If you are talking on your cell and you have your music playing you may not hear and emergency vehicle with the sciron on trying to get by and it can cause and accident. Or if you are texting and not paying attention to the road and its a red light ahead and now your about to crash into someone who has the green light. When driving we have to realize that we are not just driving for our selves we are driving for others, so lets keep our roads safe don't talk/text and drive.

i would never say i have never used my phone while driving but that is the dummies thing a person can do. your not only putting your life in danger but orders also. i dont think illinois should make the law to where people can drive and talk on the phone because alot of people could be killed. i think people just need to take more of an responiblty and know what they are doing could later hurt someone or even there self.

Texting while driving is just plain stupid. Talking on a cell phone while driving can be distracting, but the laws in place against it seem overbearing to me. The idea is that because using a cell phone can be a distraction it increases the risk of accident. This is true, but people do things in their cars all the time that are just as distracting, like eating, but there are no laws that address that. Also, in the states where driving while on a cell is illegal, they allow you to do it if you're using a headset. I don't see how this makes sense, because the actions to make or receive a call are generally the same and the only difference in the mechanics of talking would be that the person with the headset has an extra hand free. I drive just fine with one hand whether I am on a phone or not.

I think it would make more sense to just enfold the use of cell phones in an accident into a negligent driving law, that way it is only illegal if it actually causes an accident. They already do this is any case where an accident may be caused by texting or talking. Police and prosecutors can easily subpoena cell phone records to determine whether the driver was texting or calling within a small period of time before the accident.

If a person I knew were killed by a driver who was using a cell phone, of course I'd be upset. But, it's not like the cell phone shoots out a death ray at random passerby. It's the act of negligent driving that causes accidents, and not all cell phone use causes negligent driving.

I have been on many calls where kids are badly hurt, or dead, because they were texting. It is not safe, and should be banned in all states. They cause distractions in driving and how you respond in your driving.

This should be legal in ALL STATES. I don't want to find out one of my family members or some one close to me were killed from being in a car accendent because the other person couldn't stop texting just to get from point A to point B. Something should really be done about this, not just in a few cities or town... But everywhere!s
