What should we do about the legal drinking age? Should it be lowered , should it be raised, should there be stiffer penalties in order to control underage drinking? Should bars only allow people that are of legal drinking age to enter?

The legal drinking age hasn't done a whole lot of good for the U.S. and it never really has. I believe that in light of recently becoming a college student, many of my peers see the drinking age as a pesky guidline rather than an actual law that needs to be followed. Stiffer penalties would be one way to combat the onset of underage drinking, but for those like myself that do it anyway, it gives us more of an incentive to push the limits and not get caught. As for the question of permitting only those legally able to drink into bars, this completely shuts down the family-style bar and grill industry. If this law, for some ungodly reason, we to be instated, the business of such establishments as Buffalo Wild Wings and Jupiters II would quickly lose a portion of their clientel and suffer major financial losses.

Honestly, there is really nothing you can do to try and fix the legal drinking age. Lots of underage drinkers have more means of getting liquor when they want. No penalty will change what people do because they don't care. Bars can't ban people who can't drink out because it is also a place to listen to music, dance, and socialize and you shouldn't be able to take that away.

Whether or not the legal drinking age will change, there isn't much that could be done about underage drinking. If a person isn't old enough to buy liquor, they always know someone who is. Underage drinking happens so often, and very few people get caught. Bars should not only allow people that are of legal drinking age to enter. Thats like taking away underage people's privelage to enjoy themselves.

Personally I believe the legal drinking age should be lowered to 18. I do not see how it is fair that government expects us to go to war and possibly die for our country, but they will not allow us to drink a few beers with our friend. I understand this can somewhat cause a bad situation in that most people turn 18 when they are seniors in high school, but honestly everyone knows that high schoolers drink too. I know my friends and i did then. By making stiffer penalties everyone knows that underage drinkers will just want to drink even more because that is the way most people in society are these days. When you tell someone they can not do something that just makes them want to do it even more.

The drinking age for those in the armed services is 18. The "underaged" can legally buy and consume alcohol with proof of military identification. On base, identification is not much of an issue. This condition also applies to those that are serving overseas.

I don’t think the drinking age should be changed at all. I think the maturity level of people under twenty-one are not developed enough to handle alcohol. I have a class full of kids under twenty-one and all they brag about is how drunk and high they got, and they don’t know how they were able to drive home. This conversation happens EVERY CLASS I have with them, and it scares me. I don’t hear this kind of conversation happen with older people. I think the laws for underage drinking need to be a lot stricter. Kids get way too much slack when it comes to drinking. I think the underagers should spend time in jail and serve time doing community service every time they get caught the punishment should double. Also the supplier should also serve jail time and be issued hefty fines for contributing to the minors. When it comes to bars I think that should be ZERO tolerance for underagers to be in them. I think that if your not twenty-one you can’t go into a bar.

The legal drinking age should defanately NOT be lowered and the penalties should defanately be a LOT stiffer. I'm talking jail time, HUGE fines and community work. I work in a college apartment building and see drunk underagers ALL the time. It's pathetic the choices these people make! Not only should bars not admit people not 21 or older, but college dorms and apartment buildings should place rules down for so much beer per tenant per room with heavy fines if caught breaking the rules. And people that buy alcohol for underagers should face huge fines and jail time as well, cause they are worse than the drinkers themselves.

The legal drinking age doesn't work.Basically because there are law enforcement officers that may be too lose on it or some that may be to tight about it. The penalties then will vary, and knowing that, underaged drinking aren't really scared. The limit should stay at 21 seeing has how it is ineffective. Stiffer penalties definitely, higher fines, community service, notices at bars...fine the parents. Then the parents will get pissed and whoop that kids ass, which is something all kids need. If you can't drink...why are you at the bar? Getting all prettied up to watch others drink sounds like a waste

I think the legal drinking age is fine where it's at looking at it from a responsible perspective. 21 is a good age that most young adults have matured and taken on responsibilities. Although so many young teens get alcohol, the age might as well be lowered. Teens will continue to get alcohol and keep drinking no matter what the laws are unless they are really severe. Whatever the laws are now, if they were doubled would be the only chance to maybe stop underage kids from drinking. Bars should only allow 21 year olds in. Why would they let underage kids in? They probally account for half of their sales but when they get in trouble from the police or city it's going to hurt worse than losing a few sales to minors. Either way i don't think that there is a way to stop underage kids from drinking. The age is set where it should be but laws need to be much harsher to scare teens away.

Personally I believe that the legal drinking age is a joke. No matter what age they set it at underage kids will be able to get a hold of alcohol. In Urbana and Champaign the legal age to get into a bar is 19. The thing though is that on a busy night where the bar is overflowed and bartenders are overwhelmed, someone below 21 can easily get their hands on alcohol. As for the stiffer penalties theres nothing more that they can really do. They already hand out 200 dollar tickets now, i think thats how much there at now. Now they can even suspend your licence for a year if you are caught drinking unerage if you are under 18. The next step would be to start putting kids in jail. As for the legal drinking age I believe that if you can fight for your country at 18, you should be able to drink at 18. As for the bars I believe that no matter what age you are you wll be able to get your hands on liquor so might as well do it in a public place where your less likely to get hurt.

It does not really matter whether we keep the same age limit for legalized drinking or not. If a young person wants to drink, they will.

Bars should never, never allow anyone under age in their establishment. There are enough alcoholics now that they would not have to worry about going out of business.

Young adults like to go out the same as adults do. The difference is that young adults have no idea what they could possibly be getting themselves into, good times are not always had by all. Alcohol has a way of making you do things that you would not normally under any circumstances think about doing.

Stiffer penalty is not the answer. Preventing them from getting it in the first place is the answer. But that cannot possibly be done in our society where it is glamorized everywhere you go. Look at the advertisements, beautiful women, sexy looking men all drinking, what does that tell our young?

the legal drinking age should be left alone..honeslty under age drinking is going to hapen regardles because alsong as young people have older friends there witll be under age drinking

I beleive 21 is the right drinking age in this country. I do have a problem with the fact that young adults who go and fight for our country over sees can come back and have a cold beer. The penalties are pretty strict right now so i dont think making them harser is the answer. I like going to the bars so they should change that.

I think that the legal drinking age is fine the way it is. I don't think that it should be lowered. I'm not really sure how underage drinking can be controlled because there is always someone out there willing to make a purchase for their friend. Not everyone drinks, so I think that it's ok to allow underage people to enter bars.

Bars should only let people in who are old enough to drink. It's a tease to let people in who are not suppose to drink in a bar to watch their friends get drunck. I think the drinking law should be raised to 25, but people will always find ways to dget liqure.I feel the teenage accident and death rate would go down

while it would be nice to lower the age of consumption i don't believe that it would be a wise decision at all. 21 is a reasonable age where most 21-year-olds have enough descency to take responsibility for their actions. I don't think that most freshman and sophmores in college do. I think that most bars should let 19 and 20 year olds in the bars if the bar tenders check id's themselves. So, no the drinking age should not be lowered and bars should be able to decide what eage they feel is appropraite for their bar.

I think 21 is a good legal age to start drinking. Yes I think the bars who sell liquor should only allow people who are of age to drink only becasuse it so easy to have someone else go and get you a drink from the bar. I remember before I was of age how tipsy I would be leaving the bar.

I think that the drinking age is actually good where it is. There still seems to be a problem with underage drinkers, but i think there always will be no matter what the case. I don't think that bars should only allow people that are of drinking age to enter. I just turned 21, but I don't think that it is fair to only allow that. Many businesses would also lose a lot of money in doing this, such as my second home Bdubs(buffalo wild wings), or any sports bar

I think no matter what is done, their will always be underage drinking and their is nothing the government can do to stop it.

No matter whether they change the drinking age; there is still going to be underage drinking. If it was lower than younger people would be buying more alchol and drinking even more because they can get it alot easier than calling a friend who is of age to get it.

i definitely don't think the drinking age should be lowered. should it be raised? i'm not sure of that either. i won't be 21 until right before my senior year of college. will that stop me? probably not if i wanted to. i hangout with people that are 21 and so there are plenty of ways that under aged can have possession of alcohol. sure i think the penalties can be stronger, but i don't think it will change anything.

i do think it would be a good idea for the bars to only allow 21 yrs of age or higher in. it may lowed the amount of under aged drinking tickets. and as much as it would suck, it would to out advantages. us college kids already have enough to pay for!

Keep everything the same. Kids will do what they want to do, if all the people making the laws can say they didn’t do anything like this than we will change it. Not a good argument at all but oh well.

I honestly don't know because the way I believe is that everyone wants to do something that they aren't supposed to. Like drinking, smoking, having sex, ect. I think that if they lower it or keep it how it is they are going to do it more and more. As in if they don't they will not have the idea that it's prhivited to do it. I mean, at firts they will drink a lot because there will be more freedom, but then later they are not going to pay more attention to it. Instead, they are gonna have to think if that's what they want for them now that no one is protecting them what so ever from being an alcoholic. For me, it wouldn't matter, I think that if I want to drink I could easily tell someone to buy it for me,but that's not the point. And I think that if it's illegal to drink under 21, then they should let anyone under 21 to get into clubs, bars and all other places because not averyone want to drink. That would affect thing in may ways and many people that like to party without drinking.

i think that the legal drinking age is just fiune with me. if you lower it there will be so many more deaths and dui related accidents. if bars only allow people in there that are legal drinking age they will not have enough people there a night to keep the bar afloat
