In the U.S. millions of families live on welfare, some feel as though people are taking advantage of the system and the government. Working people argue that it is not fair that they work and their money goes to people who do not work and sit around and do nothing. Others argue that it is not fair to the kids, that just because the parents have no money the kids shouldnt have to suffer and go with out on things that they need to survive, and that is where welfare is a must in the U.S.

When should families receive welfare?

Should single adults with no kids receive welfare?

How broke does someone need to be before they receive welfare?

If some one does not have a job and is not trying to get a job should they still receive welfare?

Is it fair to the people who work that they should have to pay for the people who do not work?

Should people on welfare have to do some sort of job or service for the government, something like community service?

What things should welfare cover; medical, food, home, heat, etc.....?

The majority of people living on welfare do need the assistance. Do I have a problem with that. By no means. The majority of people in the system right at this point in time have to carry a job. They have to work at least so many hours per week. When you take in the price of gas, utilities, and food costs....they do not make enough to survive, just enough to get by. Welfare does not pay all of your house or rent payment, they do not pay all the utilities they allow you so much the rest you have to come up with. As far as food stamps go, again you have to work in order to receive them.

Since I cannot come up with a justifible reason why we would deny our poor food. Then I say leave it alone. Should they help single poor adults or our senior citizens? Yes, they should. They are human too and need a way to survive.

I also agree with pam. There are many people out there that need welfare. Although i know that some people abuse the right. Although there is no one to police it. And even if you did have someone to go out and investigate that person, by the time you pay the investigator, u could have just let them have the welfare.

I agree with families needing welfare but to a cetain extent. My brother has neighbors that collect welfare yet the father wrks. Nw when then are collecting welfare its ridiculous that they can go and spend that money on ATV's and leisure items. If they want to collect welfare then they should have to use it on family items or food for the kids. Also the problem doesnt have to do with being poor many families could support them selves if they would just stop being lazy and get a job. Yes the job market is get lower and lower, but that doesn't mean there aren't any jobs.

I agree with the other two, however, i can see why working people are upset that their money is going to non-working people. i think that if someone is lazy and won't even try to get a job, then shouldnt deserve welfare. i think people need to show the government that they really do deserve it.

Welfare should cover the basics, like food and water and shelter. nothing fancy though, just enough to get them by. i think that's what welfare is, just enough. my problem is that i know people on welfare that complain because they don't have the nicest of things. well that's how it should be. you should have to work to get luxeries.

I think it is highly abused. Some people may actually use it the right way, but I see it abused. Single people with no kids need to get off their ass and get a job, there are plenty of people moving out of their parents house every semester and they can get a job and manage. I don't enjoy having my taxes taken from my checks to get turned into rims on a cadillac. And if they don't get a job then they most definitely need to do some community work or government service. Welfare should cover a roof over your head, food, and heat.

I think welfare is a very good idea to help those in need. However, there is also a need for limitations on who receives it. I would be very upset to know that part of my paycheck is going to someone who sits at home every day and receives a check each month to pay for food, clothing, electricity, and other things that I have to pay for too. If a person is actually trying to find a job and can't find one, or has a low-income job and still can't make ends meet, then I don't mind helping them out. I think that low-income families with children should be top priority for receiving welfare. I hate the idea of children suffering because their parents don't have a job.

wellfare is a sticky subject. its deffinatley needed by some but also horribly abused. for example some of the older people in my home town call I72 the wellfare highway. they call it this because people from like kentucky and tennesse get there wellfare check there and then drive to chicago or somewhere else in illinois and get one there as well. i know work isnt fun but my morals at least to earn your keep have a job and be a productive memeber of society. wellfare seems to me like somthing that should be used in an emergency situation and nothing else. not if you realize you can get it and decide not to work because of that.

I'm not very knowledgable on welfare, but I think it's good to have. It's reassuring to have that little bit of extra support. But, that doesn't mean we should abuse the privilege of welfare. This shouldn't ever be considered a right. It's not your right to have other people look after you and support you.
We are wealthy enough and have the ability and resources to do this, this doesn't mean everyone deserves it either.
I think families with children should be the receivers of welfare. It's not nearly as hard to support one person as it is a family.
I'm a firm believer that people are in their circumstance due to their own spending habits, problems, etc. Although there may be a few cases where this isn't true, many people don't need to be on welfare. They need to learn how to budget and spend effeciently---> this usually means no entertainment or wants.
There is no reason a person without a job and not seeking should receive welfare (unless of a disability) I understand that life isn't fair and I'm still going to pay for others, I actually don't mind this. But, when my hard earned money goes to waste such as people who don't need it, this is a problem.
It would be great to game those on welfare give back in some way. What about for families if there was a few moms on welfare that were paid to babysit for other welfare families. Then, those parents could go and try to find jobs, receive a degree or do another service. Maybe then adults would be able to find jobs?
There also needs to be more strict settings on welfare coverage. The necessities could be medical care, NEEDED foods (regulated so no junk or pleasure foods), home bills. If you're on welfare I don't think a television should be paid for (no cable) also cars aren't necessary in a city (I love buses!) These are just a few ideas of what I think

I believe that there is a lot of people living on welfare and not trying to get a job or better theirselves. People should have to be monitored for a week or month to see what they are doing for theirselves to make times better.

Everyday i wake up and go to work. i work alot of hours and dont get paid much the only thing i look forewrd to at the end of the week is my paycheck. Thats when i get mad because about 50-60 is takin out of my check because of taxes and free loaders. $3120 is roughly what goes towards these programs yet i still see people in the streets asking me for money. i dont mind helping other people out dont get me wrong but why should we when that kind of money is taken out of our pay then given away and it seems like they do nothing with it. I think the system is so flawed it is beyond fixing and anyone who is OK with giving that kind of money away i could sure use it

I do think that welfare is needed, especially for the adults with kids. I heard a talk from Liz Murphy. the movie Homeless to Harvard was based on her. She was homeless by the age of fourteen. she said that she felt like there was a big wall between her and society. Who wants to hire a homeless person? She didnt choose to be homeless but it happened and sometimes people just need a little help. The people who do spend the money on drugs and luxury items dont deserve it, but there is no way of enforcing what people spend their welfare checks on. I think that the people who receive a welfare check should work on community service if they dont already have a job. i think it would make that big wall between them and society shrink because society would see them as being apart of them.

I have no problem with welfare, just with the people that abuse the system. Families should recieve welfare when they do not have enough income to survive, or if they are disabled or handicap. People should still get welfare if they do not have a job, and are trying to get one, but the people that do not have a job and just sit around and do nothing should not get a dime. I really do not think it is fair that people that work have to pay for the people who work, but there is no other way around that. People who are able to still do work, should have to do some sort of community service until they get a job, while they are on welfare. Welfare should cover a person's or family's basic needs to survive.

families should only recieve welfare if both parents have full time jobs and still cannot support their family. if a person is looking for a job they should recieve assistence in getting the job but not recieve money during that time period. it is unfair for the woeking percentage of the population to have to support the percent that doesn't work for a living.

Well i dont know much about the welfare system, but I do know that the maximum time a person can be one welfare is 2 years. Just one time, thats it. Basically you get one chance. I think that poverty is the real issure here. Millions of people are living in poverty, but how many of them are on welfare? We are obviously losing the war on poverty. If people do not help out their neighbors on welfare who will? Not the government. The minimum wage is way to low. The government says that a family earning under 20k a year is living in poverty. The minimum wage in illinois is $7.75, Thats $16,120 a year. After things like Utilities, Housing, Transportation, Food, Health Care, Child Care, your in debt, thousands of dollars in debt. Not to mention clothing, supplies, educational expenses. How can a family get out of poverty? The system is made to keep people in poverty.

I personally don't have a problem with people getting welfare that need it. It irritates me when people who don't need it or people who aren't trying to do anything for themselves get it.I don't think that you must have kids to receive welfare. Sometimes people just need a little bit of help to get on their feet and some people aren't capable of providing for themselves because they are disabled , so they need asistance. There are others that just sit back and depend on welfare because it's open for them and I don't think it should be allowed unless they make an effort to better themselves. I think the funds should go to whatever the individual needs it for.

many people do take advantage of welfare. i know many people who do. rules for welfare should be very strict. many people can work they just choose not to. fuck them. they shouldnt have a family in the first place if they dont want to support them.
