Are people too materialistic?

What’s your opinion on people today being more and more materialistic, and less humble?

If your have no comment on that, please try to answer some of these questions.

Can a person be judged to be materialistic by how he spends his resources?
Is collecting material goods an important concern?
Are you materialistic if you pursue wealth and luxury?
Are you concerned more about money than people?
How far would you go for money?
How much do you care about your external validation?
Is material success the highest purpose/goal?
What are we here for?
Does it matter how I treat others as long as I get/have what I want?
If life is about materialism why should I live a moral life?
If you are not distinguished, why do people look at you as if you are inferior to them?

Thanks for your help!

I have to say that I firmly believe people in today's society are too materialistic. People care less and less about each other, and more and more about what they own and what they want. It's sad if you think about it really. 60 years ago people didn't care what they wore, what car they drived, or what new things they owned - they cared about each other. People just lived life and would be friends with anyone, no matter what that person owned. Today it's much different - how often do you see extremely rich people with lots of things around middle-class people with a less amount of things? People define themselves (and their social status) on materialistic ideas.I think it's only getting worse. College kids aren't cool enough if they don't buy clothes from American Eagle, or have their own car, or spend ridiculous amounts of money on things that they want. What happened to the old days when nobody even cared? Life was about living with whatever you had and not wanting much more. That has definitely changed.

I think alot of people have become to materialistic, We have to remember no matter what religion you are or aren't you simply can't take anything with you when you die. The more you have the more work have have to do to keep what you have and to care for what you have & all that time will eat away your life until you wake up one morning and realize how much time you have lost keeping your car clean, working to save for that new camera, losing sleep worring about how to save money or just losing time by hoping you win the lottery! Some countries have very little personal possesions because they are completely content with themselves. We on the other hand have to brag, boast and shove it in peoples faces that we have money. I believe our society puts alot of value on their material stuff than what should be of real value. Family, children, friends, co-workers. We live in a society where money talks and if is an intregal part of every ones life. Can a person be judged to be materialistic by how he spends his resources. Yes they are, but that does not mean that it is right. Judging other people, is not how we should live our lives. Collecting material goods is a concern when that is more important than putting food on the table for your children. If pursueing a life of luxury and wealth interferes with essential happiness of yourself and those who are a part of your life, that is going to far. I care about how I feel about myself as a person and being the best I can be without hurting anyone else even those I do not know. Treating others with respect, sincerety is my goal in life and hope that there are others who feel the way I do. I know that feeling of being inferior and struggle with that all the time, but I know that when the day is done I have lived that day to the best of my ability with a strong moral compass to guide me to my decisions every day. I make an effort everyday not to judge others as I do not want others to judge me. I do the best I can to accept others for who they are and with that try to understand who they are. Should it matter what others think of you if you know in your heart that you have lived that day to the best of your ability? Linda Francis

I think material things are definatly becoming more important than moral values. In pop culture, what a person does or does not have determines their worth, as opposed to who they are. I don't think a person can be judged to be materilistic based on how he/she spends their money. I think being materilistic is a characteristic rather than an action. Being materilistic is putting too much importance on material things, not just wanting them. A person who is materilistic wants things too much. I enjoy having nice things, but it's not who I am. I won't give up who I am for money or something material. Material success is a want, not a necessity. Money and things can make a person happy temporarily, but when the money is spent or the fun of the object wears off, the person is stuck where they started- unhappy. For some people, having money and buying things is like a fix. It's temporary, and never enough. The only way a person can be happy is to be honest with themself. Moral values are important. I think if a person is honest enough with themself to get to actually know themself and be ok with who they are and what they want they will want to treat others with respect. You learn that people deserve respect simply for being a person. You learn that that is a basic right that is more important than your childish, immature want to treat others poorly because you are in a bad mood or want to cheaply boost your own self-esteem.

These days all I hear is that the United States is a materialistic place to be at and that is why students today want to study and become something that will bring those lots of money. I recently talked with a colleague and we were talking back and forth about the poor and rich people. I told her that I’d rather be poor and happy than rich and unhappy, and she said that she’d rather be just rich and happy. All this sounds very materialistic. These days all I hear is money, money, and more money. I don’t know if there are enough people these days who aren’t working to buy those expensive cars, those fancy clothes, the things they don’t need but they know it will look good on them. It frustrates me to think that people would pick a career mainly because it pays a lot of money. Nowadays, people are studying to be doctors. Number one career major is pre-medicine. Who will become a doctor? Will everyone? No. Even if you get the grades and you go for it only for the money, you won’t get to be good doctor. There are doctors and doctors. Would you want a doctor to operate on you mainly because they know how much they’ll make at the end of the day? Would you want your doctor to have in his mind dollar signs? I hope not. If some have the talent and the determination to help people, they’ll make it. Though, if most are out there searching for that job that will bring them a lot of money and that being the only reason they are studying to become something, then it’s not worth it. I personally think that because you’re a totally different person. This whole thing is difficult to even comprehend. Why not study something that makes you happy? Why not study a hobby that you’re good at and major in a career for it? Why? Because most people study for what its worth, not for what will make them happy. Wouldn’t people want to go to work happy and work for the money like they don’t really need it? I would want to. So its really a shame that people are so self centered and only care about objects.

I beleive everybody is a little materialistic. Its a growing thing now and i dont think it is goin to stop anytime soon. It makes people feel good about themselfs when they have their exspensive cloths and cars. Really their isnt anything you can do about it though. its just something we have to except

Everyone is materialistic today by what gets advertised or what many people have that they think they need. People in today's society rely on what they have and even go out if they do not have the latest updated thing like, phones, computers, cars. Before wanting evrything back than, people had ways to get around and did not care much about the newest thing that came out. I think people started becoming materialistic when the new millienium came. Mostly, it's all how you see others and yourself by what you own that lets you blend into today's society.

I find it true that people are becoming more and more materialistic. I don't think a person can be judged by how they spend their resources though. If I work hard for my money and take care of what I need to take care of and have some left over it is none of your business how I spend my money because I have worked for it and I take pride in showing off what I have worked hard for. I don't believe one is materialistic for pursuing wealth and luxuries. If I work hard, I want to have something to show for what I have done. I don't think pursuing wealth is being materialistic because it is a lifestyle most people want to live. They dream about it and try their best to make it come true. Money is vital in our world today. Without it, a person cannot do anything. I am concerned about money - yes - but does that take away from my caring for others - no -. I admit I would go along way to become wealthy because it is a goal for me. i don't want to have to live paycheck to paycheck for the rest of my life. I want to enjoy the luxuries that come with it. I think some people lose sight of who they care for when pursuing wealth, but a lack of money has been known to break up people also. I think some people hold this issue higher than others. It just comes down to how one feels about it.

materialistic is a pretty harsh word. people now a days are doing what everybody is doing. pursuing a dream. things arent as they used to be. you cant have a minimum wage job and actually live good, depending only on that job. people want to get rich to live good, that is a necessity. i think we've just adapted to our new world, a world where we have to live and compete to get more money, or else we will be run over by everybody else. remember in driver's ED. when the teacher told us that on the road, if everybody was going over the speed limit you need to speed too? otherwise we will get injured. its a violent cold world now and we all want to live. right now the credit card people are happy making money of us, and we are sick of it, so we pursue money and wealth, and everybody does that too. its the survival of the fittest i think. and to live good you actually need to do what everybody does, look for the money!

It is sad to say, most Americans are too materialistic. I like my material possessions, however I won't scarafice groceries for a $100 pair of jeans or tennis shoes. I know some people who only shop at the expensive stores, buy only name brand clothing. I think it is ridiculous to but infants and toddlers only name brand clothing. They don't wear it long enough to get your money's worth. I have seen people broke because of being too materialistic. I don't require only name brand clothing, nor will I raise my children to be materialistic. I think that is why there are so many problems in children and getting teased if they don't have the name brand items. I think it is wrong to be too materialistic, because there are more important things to focus on.

I do believe people have become too materialistic. Material goods have become important in status, rather than noble achievements. People feel that monry makes you happy. Our grandparents, great grandparents, and great great grandparentsdidn't have a lot of money, and they were happier than we are. I think people will understand that material goods don't make them happy, but probably later on in life. As they buy more and more, thiunking the next thing will make them happier. People use to make due with what they had, this seems to have changed. There was a time when candy or a soda was a rare treat for children. Children are now able to get candy at every corner at any time. Materialism is instilled in us at a young age. Commercials target children, making them the future super consumers. The generations to come will be worse than we are.

I'm writing a senior-level argumentative essay on the growing materialism in America. My view, like most of the ones I have read, it that the problem is becoming excessive. However, you have to look at it from different perspectives...
Materialism may be viewed as VITAL for new items/technologies in society. More fuel efficient vehicles, means of production, etc, can be considered materialistic, yet in order for a country to stay with the times, bettering itself is necessary. One might also claim that materialism is just a natural part of a developing world. These are both true opposition points. However, there is a limit. New technologies take away from relationships, self-sufficiency, and threaten leaving people behind who maybe don't have the funds to keep up. It also makes people self-interested in the "more more more" mindset. Appreciate and value are lessened. Morality declines...
The audience my paper addresses would stereotypically be an upper-class business owner. He or she probably thinks I'M a tree-hugging Buddhist. It's all in perspective and logic

60 years ago people were materialistic! and someone said that every1 cared for eachother and anyone...well 60 years ago there was racism...duh! There were also WORLD wars. The world has gradually reached this point of materialism. It has been happening overtime and the reason is because the world is overpopulated. With more people there requires more needs. Simple as that.
