Learning Disorders

Do too many people these days use learning disorders as excuses for poor effort or poor attitude in school? Learning disorders such as dyslexia, dysgraphia (a learning disability resulting from the difficulty in expressing thoughts in writing and graphing), and dyscalculia (math dyslexia) are real conditions and cause real problems for many people, but it seems that in recent years you hear more and more about people who have even light cases of these disorders and other conditions such as ADHD who use them as excuses not to try their hardest. Instead they take the easy way out and let their disorder limit or define them. Do you think this is a problem in our society or educational system? Do you have any other thoughts on this subject?

Thanks for your comments!

I believe that it is becomming an issue where too many people are usuing that as their way out of having to work hard in school. There are many people out there that have a real problem, but from what I have seen it is pretty easy to take advantage of the situation. I have seen many students abuse the system and I don't think it is right. I don't know much about the testing for it but I think there needs to be more Thorough testing to decide weather or not a student actually needs special assistance.

I think the problem is that kids that do not have the ambition to go to college in high school do not work hard in school and get "diagnosed" with a learning dissabilty so they can take slack off classes and still pass high school witha high grade point average. Another problem with that is that the kids that do not have dissabilities are taking the help away from the kids that truly need help.

I do think kids use learning disorders to their advantage when it comes to class work, class schedules, or just slacking off in general. I find kids with the disorders just don't have the ambition to go to school or do the work it takes. Not only are these kids hurting themselves, but they are taking the assistance away from the kids who really need it. I think this is becoming a solution for kids who want an easy way out. There are a lot of kids out their with these disorders that need the help, and I don't think it's fair to them. The kids that have the disorders shouldn't have help taken away from them because some kids don't have the ambition to go to school.

I think that there are people who do this to their own advantage so they wouldn't have to do as much work.

However, these people also probably have no desire to go to college, or if they do, they won't make it through college.

I think one thing that may be hindering this type of thing is technology. With new technology, it's easier to see just how "Bad" the disease is, or if they even have it if people actually go that far, which I could easily see.

This is going to sound mean but... if people actually want to do that, to make it easier for them, I say let them. They'll never be successful in college if they do make it that far, and won't be any good in the real world either.

My opinion anyway.

yea i have been diagnosed with ADD and dyslexia. and i do have problems somtimes and i find it difficult to concentrate on work or somthing that i have to do. i have never used my learning disorders as an excuss though. i took medication for my ADD but quite because it caused insomnia. i passed high school with a 3.0 and took adv. english and adv.psych and adv.gov. i think that people with learning disabilities have to work harder than everone else. because they not only do they have to work at the same capacity as eveyone else but they also have to wok through their own problems. i do though agree that some kids with LD's do use it as a pass through high school but i find offense in some of these comments. so :-p

I don't know about other people who may have a learning disorder what they think or how they behave, but I have intimate knowledge about what I have experienced as a person with a learning disorder. I can first tell you that having this disorder is at the very least frustrating. When you deal with just this feeling all the time among all the other emotions that come with having this disorder, you experience emotional upheavals that has to be suppressed. I have to work so much harder to comprehend what I am suppose to learn and attain the information. I don't have a severe case, but it is bad enough to cause me anguish and stress. I do not let this disorder limit me or define me. All I ever ask is that people be understanding. In everything I do I put 100% effort, sometimes more, not to prove anything, but because I have to. I can understand why some may show poor effort or poor attitude in school, but is it a willing attitude or a result of the disorder? Those who suffer from a learning disorder need support, accomodations, and most of all understanding and acceptance of their abilities as opposed to their disability. Linda Francis

Thats a tough question, I do think that the fast paced way of the world and all the confusion can add to people thinking they have a disorder. I also beleive that alot of people are over diagnosed, anymore if you have one bad day out of 30 they will prescribe you an antidepression medicine! People also want something to blame for there downfall or just simply slow learing instead of working hard to get were they want to be. Some people just can't handle reality so they turn to disorders to put the blame on why they are overly jealous, lazy or just mad at the world do to unresolved issues.Ther definately needs to be more screening for people who think the have a disorder before prescribing meds. I do want to add that both my younger step sisters were slightly slower learners when they were younger, they simply took extra classes, got extra help and worked there butts off. Now they are both doing great in college. Amy Marx

There are many people in the world who have a very serous problem to obtain an education. they have a learning disability where they can not obtain big information unless is stated in special ways. these people seek for help and it is undestandable. yet, there are many other people who have very little problem and they make a big deal about it. these people try to take adventage in this situation and try to take the easy way out. i think people are affecting the worl by trying to take the easy way in education. education is a big part of our life and it is wrong to try to get to it with special helpers. these people who are in this types of situation with a little problem, they tend to get no where with their education.

The problem is that kids don't want to try very hard or they are to in to drugs. For example my school has been ranked on of the top 50 school in Illinois and has very good educational system. In my graduating class, 30 percent were in the National Honor Society or what ever it is called. But the in coming freshmen don't seem to care, about 30 are failing 8 grade and more than half are doing drugs, or smoke. I thought that my class was bad when it came to those things, but my class at least cared about school no matter how much they claimed they didn't. I do think these kids look for a excuse to not do good in school and the parents come up with the excuse to tell the administartion. They don't want to see the real reason. When the kid does have the disorders then the parents are tend to ignore it and ask way their kid is doing so bad in school. In some cases this is true in others it is not.

Yes i think that there are too many kids saying that they have a learning disorder to their advantage. I understand that some kids really have a problem learning but there are some kids just saying that so that they can get an easy way out of taking the hard road to get something. But i think that will come back to hurt the kids that are using that to their advantage in the long run. they might not be able to get a certain job when they grow up.

It is apparent tha more and more kids are getting diagnosed with dosorders such as ADHD more freqently then in the past. I think that a major reason for that is in the way that the kids are being brought up. Usually, both parents work while the kids are sent to some school or babysitter and they later, the parents are too busy to pay attention to them. A possiblity of way these disorders are coming up more are more frequently is because the kids are trying to find ways to get more attention.
These disorders may have also been around for longer than we have been able to recognize and only now we are able to more correctly diagnos the disorder. Scientists have had more time to study kids and learn what is going on with them to act or see things in certain ways. I think that the educational system wil be able to come up with a solution to these problems in the future but we will have to find ways now to help the ones that are being effected.

it is a problem, not a big one though. i think throughout high school it is implied that college is the best way to go. they barely touch the subject that college isn't actually for everyone. i, myself, dont believe that college is meant for people like me. but im in it. the thing is excuses like that occured to me and dwelled in my mind for a while, but i never used it for the simple fact that i know i dont like to study. that is the simplest cause. now most people who use such excuses dont want to study either, but they dont know it yet. its not a bad thing to not be a college type student. seriously speaking how many people go to college for the education? 2 maybe 3 percent? i know most people go for the better jobs and money. and that is what students like me want. but instead of making up these excuses why not push yourself to study and actually earn the job that you get?
some people actually do suffer from these disorders and they actually need all the help that they want, but they are very rare. plus the tv commercials imply that if you forget a lot, under stress and some other crap, you have a disorder. even though most people have everything mentioned, stress, forgetting, an active life and it is completely normal!

I think it's wrong for people to do this kind of thing. You have people that have the ability to function even though they have a learning disorder. People like this take advantage of their disability and clame their unable to perform certain work related things. This kind of stuff takes away from the ones who really have a learning disorder. Those are the ones who can't get the break they need and deserve because the people who are taking it for granted mess things up for the people who really need it.

I think it all depends on the person and the learning disorder, and whether their parents are encouraging to use that as an excuse. I feel if parents are doing this, then they aren't helping their child develop fully. The parents may not want to be bothered with going the extra distant to encourage the child to accomplish regular classes. I don't know if this is happening, but somewhere the child or person grew up thinking it was okay to use it as an excuse.
I feel that people with learning disorders, should be tested and encouraged to do better, not letting them take advantage of the disorder.

This question is very hard to answer in my case because I use to have their so called "learning disorders". They diagnois me with ADHD when I was in 3rd grade and was given Redilen (excuse my spelling) and I took it for 3 years. After those three years I decided to stop taking it altogether because I hated the way I made me feel tired so ever sence then no one really figured out any difference in my personality other than I was energetice. So i think if you know you need help, ask for it.
