Why are the Chicago Police among the most corrupt in the nation? What are your views and thoughts pertaining to a possible solution to this problem?

Thanks for your comments--

when choosing a topic like this, it is very hard to determine whether or not it is actually corrupt. are they really stealing money from people or illegally taking drugs for their own sake. is police brutality really an issue or are they just doin their job to protect us as well as themselves. Many people get the wrong impression of cops thinking that they might be unprofessional or use too much force but one must think as if they were the cop and see whether or not the cop was doing what he or she had to do to keep themselves out of danger.

I actually wasn't aware that they among the most corrupt, and if given better detail as to why they are than I could probably respond better. I guess it could be due to many things such as setting an example as to not tolerate crime, a lack of law enforcment, or due to the high crime rate. Any reason tough and I still wouldn't understand completely a police officer overstepping there boundries as I'm sure they know they're being scrutinized for every move & wouldn't want to go to jail themselves. I don't know that they are corrupt and if they are, I would hope that something change as soon as possible. I would hope that someone would have the moral conscience to do something about it. I believe that some kinds of corruptions exists throughout our society and we need as a society to help stop it. We also need to know what it is so we can better deal with the situation. What in particular is it that makes you believe that the Chicago Police are corrupt more so than any where else? Solutions to this problem is exposure of the problems. People have to sometimes make a statement and follow through with the fight against injustice. Legally of course. Align yourself with others who feel and believe as you do, get support from the legal community, neighbors friends etc. Plan strategies within the limits of the laws already in place. Linda Francis

Chicago is a city that has been steeped in coruption since the day it was founded. the greatest mobsters and gangsters of the twentieth century are from chicago. does the chicago police department have corruption in, yes it does, does the los angeles police department have corruption in it, yes it does, and so on and so on. i dont believe that police corruption is a good thing but it is something that is going to happen no matter where you are. the best thing we can do is to keep fighting it and keep talking about it, which i think we are doing a fairly good job of.

Whether or not the Chicago police are corrupt, I don't know but I think police officers become corrupt because of fact that today in our country money is often more important than morals. People put money ahead of the importance of justice and safety. Everyone is selfish sometimes, and police officers are in a good position to take advantage of others for their benefit. The only way to fight corruption is to recognize it as a problem. The government, citizens, and the police force itself have to admit that the corruption has gone entirely too far and make it a priority to change it.

I, like most of the most of the people who have commented on this question, did not know the Chicago Police were that corrupt. I know that in every city/town (no matter how big or small) there will always be corruption with authority figures, so I guess that the Chicago Police being corrupt would make sense. People in power feel like they have all the power and can do whatever they please - and sadly, they normally do. In this situation I can only thing of a few simple solutions: 1. have other police forces from around the country do constant checks on the Chicago Police 2. have each member of the force give other members assessments(or observations) and 3.ask the public's opinion and for its help.

I did not know that they are corrupt, but the reason could be from the crime in Chicago. Chicago is big and many cops may not do their duty, lacking of the law enforcement. One othe reason could be from gangs in Chicago and many shootings that happens in the south.

I dont know if we could actually say that they are the most corrupt or not. A lot of cities have corrupt cops a matter of fact i bet all probably have at least one. I think maybe why thier are corrupt cops is so they can get away with things.Thats probably hy they become cpos to begin with.

I had no idea the Chicago police were corrupt. If they are, i have no idea why. The could possibly be corrupt because they feel they have so much power. Being a cop in one of the largest citys in the country would give one a sense of power. I beleive they do a lot of good, but they could possibly be corrupt as well. Matt Lindsay

This question is a very hard one to talk about. Since a lot of people have never lived in chicago it is hard to say what the cops do and don't do. But i think for a question like this you have to have hard evidence showing what the cops are doing wrong. Yes i think some cops use their authority in the wrong way but i think more than not most cops do the best they can.

I am not sure if there will ever be a solution to police forces being corrupt. We have to realize that Chicago isn't the only corrupt police in the United States. It is sad to know the people who took an oath to protect people, are ones who are potenially hurting people. I do not think the corruption will ever die, it is something that has been around for a very long time.

This is a question that I as a person can except. I'm from Chicago and yes the police are pretty tuff. In Chicago you have some cool police officers and then you have some dirty low down cops. You could be just walking down the street and get stopped by the police; they might either put something on you, or holla that same line "You fit the description", when they know all they wanted to do was harrass you. Its not just the Chicago police thats corrupt, I came down here to Champaign for school. I didn't think it would be nothing like home; but boy was I wrong, the police out here are just the same. So its not just Chicago police thats corrupt; I'm quite sure there's plenty all over the world.

The Chicago police have been tackling corruption since the prohibition years. Elliot ness found out how corrupt the force was when cracking down on Chicago gansters like Al Capone. There has been a police officer that has been in the news lately. He viciously beat up a female bartender on tape. The tape was aired on the news, he went behind the bar and beat her. That same police officer made the headlines again. He was threatening all the witnesses at the bar, he was even stalking some of them. I'm not sure how the force could let him stay on the force. The one thing that the Chicago police isn't cracking down on is Corruption. I believe many police forces across the country are corrupt. There was a proposal to have a civilian revue board for our police force in Champaign. The problem is in our last election every canidate that one didn't feel that the revue board was necessary. A major triumph for corrupt police, they can be revued by other corrupt police instead.
