This is my question.

Are Americans unhealthy? Why or Why not.
Why are there so many Americans who resist exercise and live sedentary lifestyles? Why are so many Americans overweight?

Thanks for your answers.

America is unhealthy. Most of the way in which the country is run is unhealthy! The country has given way to indecision and ignorance. It is a nation that does not care, and its ploitics, eating habits and foreign policy relects that

I believe that they just don't care. They are to lazy, and don't want to have to get up and do something when they haven't before. I alson feel that some people in this world just can't help it, becuase they have a health problem. I know there are some people out there that actually try to get help and try to excersize to help improve the look of their body. chris spencer

Yes Americans are very unhealthy, we don't want to take the time to exercise, we expect instant results, and that it be on our own terms.

Yes, I believe most Americans are very unhealthy. We take food for granite way to much because we always have the resource to get it. Unlike America, most countries are very poor and don't have pantries and cabinets full of food like most Americans do. Also, we don't know how to eat in moderation. All serving sizes are huge but somehow we manage to still eat it. Going out to dinner in America is very different then going out anywhere else. The plate sizes and serving sizes are way bigger. That's what you hear a lot of foreigners say.

I think many Americans that resist exercise and live sedentary lifestyles do it because they don't know any better. That's our society and it's what they have learned to accept. Also, I don't think people seem themeselves as overweight or out of shape. It's all denial.

I'll admit, I love eating but hate exercising :) That's just the way it is.

Being a fat, lazy American myself I think qualifies me pretty well to answer your question. Why do we eat crap that tastes good and will contribute to our premature deaths? Why do we sit and watch TV instead of going out for a bike ride or taking a nice walk down the street to meet our neighbors? Why do people spend billions of dollars on diet pills and books that simply do not work? Why does a dog lick himself? Because he can. People have to have motivation to do something they don't have to do; a body at rest tends to stay at rest. It is difficult for me personally to find the motivation to exercise or to choose a healthier meal than what is offered at the local McDonald's. Maybe it has something to do with a collective low level of self-esteem in America?

American's are unhealthy. I work at Carle Clinic and I can't tell you how many people I see a day that are unhealthy, and I'm not talking just overweight. There is far more to being unhealthy than just weight. I have seen people who weigh 120 pounds that are unhealthy because they have high blood pressure or diabetes. As far as being over weight though, right now obesity is at the all time high. I know that unfortunelty I am over weight and very unhealthy. I am trying to lose weight and I am trying to exercise, but it is very difficult when you are a full time mom, work fulltime and go to school partime. When I have a moment to myself I jsut want to sit and relax, but then there is always house work to be done. It feels like there is never a break. It makes me very angry when I hear people say that its because I am lazy. Well there is really no moment in my life where I just sit and watch tv, i am constantly on the go, and my relaxation time is when I lay down for bed at 10:30pm, to only get up at 5:30am and start my day all over again. So I do believe that American's are unhealthy but sometimes its hard to be able to find time for everything going on and that doesn't mean that we don't care, because we do.

I don't think America unhealthy, its the lifestyles of which we choose as Americans. We have gone away from excercising to bad eating habits to we just don't care as a person. If the country do not care about us why should we care about the nation. We have people thats lost there jobs over the last eight years, so we just don't care about anything anymore.
It's really has gon from bad to worst here in the US so I think. What a country we live in.

First of all some people are overweight because of a medical issue like with their thyroid not just because their lazy. Second it isn't exactly cheap to get the proper fitness and healthy food either. If you go into the grocerie store the healthy food is priced higher than the processed food is. Look to our government and their pricing and tell me who is adding in the over weight community. Some are lazy and that is the issue for their weight gain but others try very hard on trying to get their weight regulated but if the parents don't teach them when their young than it is half way too late. So you might want to take a look at who the person really is and not just how their bigger than you when you're saying who is fat.

Just a couple of years ago the desire to be healthy wasn't plastered all over like it is today. We also didn't publicise obesity as much. Now there is a huge battle over the weight issuse. It has to do with a significant rise in obesity and an overall awareness of health problems. For the most part, people who are already overweight don't see the point in trying to lose the weight. Another problem that should be addressed at the same time is people being underweight, it has the same number of health problems.
