Digital World

845 million people are active users on Facebook as of December 2011 and over 145 million users are on Twitter today. Are we relying too much on the Internet for social contact? Are we addicted to our electronic devices? Do too many people spend too much time online or on their phones texting and tweeting every day? Is it ok that we are connected to everyone at all times? What do you think are the benefits of all the digital connections between people? Are there also drawbacks to people living in an online world?

How much time do you spend on the Internet daily? How many times will you check your phone in an hour?

think that todays society do rely too much on social networks and technology. We've become lazy and ofcourse, that's a bad thing. I think that it's a good and bad thing. But, mainly a bad thing for the younger generation. I've heard stories of people killing each over things that were said on social networks, fighting, as well as even braking up happy marriages. There isn't anyone to blame for these incidents but oneself. I know from experience that people spend too much time on social networks. As unprofessional as it is, I've even caught my boss on social networks during working hours. This isn't a good idea because she made me feel as if it was okay if i did the same, and i began using it constantly at work until it became a major issue. I think it's not such a big deal that we're connected to everyone becuase it has not became a major issue. We have limited connection not full connection to them. People are definitely living in an online world, atleast the younger generation. It's all about your control tolerance and sad to say over 50% of people can control the amount of usuage their using on social networks and their mobile devices. I think it has not yet got out of hand, but whose to say it won't.

I read an intriguing article recently that covered a scientific journal on exactly this topic. It stated that the insula, a prune-size region under the frontal lobes actually changes its form during technology addiction. Yes – technology addiction is a real thing! We live in an era where technology is on an exponential boom, and who knows when it will slow down. As a Wireless Consultant, I’m impartial to this miniscule change. I would say that I’m a slight extrovert, so always being in contact with those who are closest to me is an important tool to have. I recently met an Australian while I was in Los Angeles, and by using social media we have organized to visit England together in June. I would hate to think that because of a lack of technology, I would have missed out on the crazy (and possibly inappropriate...) city hopping venture I’m about to experience!

On a serious note, there is a point in which a person becomes addicted, and social media/technology can certainly have a negative impact on people who aren’t so strong willed. There have been many deaths and suicides due to things that are posted online, and this can be a serious issue. It is such a controversial topic due to the apparent ‘freedom’ of the internet, and the fact that the world’s governments have no idea how to regulate it. I’m sure as the internet matures, the globe’s nations will figure out a way to keep the ‘freedom’ regulated…

I think that we do rely on technology and social media too much. Everyday kids are thrown out of class because they will not put their phones away because they feel the need to text even though it is disrespectful during class time. A lot of people spend a good chunk of their day checking their facebook or texting which is a little extreme. Technology and social media can also be a good thing because you can keep in touch with people very easily.

Well, computers have revolutionized the world in many ways. Through the Internet, information is available at the click of a mouse. Rail booking, air booking can be done easily on the net in about 20 minutes instead of having to stand in queues for a long time. Lot of data can be stored in a pen-drive and chatting via Skype, Google etc is very beneficial especially if there isn't an opportunity or time for face-to-face or telephonic conversations.

However, every coin has two sides. So dependency on computers is not a good thing. We must not get addicted to the computer and forget about other physical activities. People become lethargic by sitting in front of the computer for many hours and it also adds to gain in weight. And for simple calculations that can be done manually we don't need to use the computer. Also, the world is becoming more and more capital-oriented and less labour-oriented. This leads to increase in unemployment. Lack of security (user profiles can be hacked in social networking sites like Orkut) is another drawback.

But all in all, the computer is a boost to mankind. Only, we people should use it more judicially instead of becoming completely dependent on it.

I think its crazy how much i will check facebook and twitter on my phone its a crazy amount of times and its a big waste of time. there are so many times i held back on homework because i couldn't concentrate because facebook was open and i was scrolling trough useless status updates its such a big fucking waste of time. i regret all those wasted hours im doing horrible in my classes because of social networks and blogs. the funny part of it all im probably going to go home right after this class and go on facebook it is addicting. i forgot my phone at home one day and trust me without it i got so much accomplished. so yes facebook and twitter are nice things to have but in moderation i wish they gave you a limited amount of time a day. self control is hard.

I am distracted by technology of the digital variety. For me, it is very easy to get stuck in front of the tv or on my laptop. I can recognize it at least. Some people are unable to do so and it takes over their lives. I have a cousin that literally was addicted to online gaming and would not eat or anything. Yesterday the weather was amazing outside and me and my sister were sitting outside on the porch and I went to get my laptop to show her a video on youtube. I had to realize after we watched it that I still had my laptop and put it down so I could continue to enjoy the beautiful day. It can be a definite distraction if you let it. People need to make their own boundaries as to how and when they will use digital media and social networking.

I do feel like people use social networks for way to much social interaction. I also feel like social networks are limiting are face to face social skills. Yes i think everyone with a smart phone or Iphone is addicted to it. Yes people spend way to much time on their phone and on the internet. I do not like the thought of everyone being connected all time, way to much information is available over the internet. The benefits are people being able to stay in contact and be a part of peoples lives that aren't living that close to you. There are a lot of negatives of people living on the internet, people spend time on social networks when they could spend that time doing something else more useful. I personally use the internet probably 3 hours a day and i use my phone pretty often 10 plus times and hour.

My opinion is that there are upsides and downsides to the extent that social networking and electronic communication are used today. A few benefits are: the ability to find old friends you've fallen out of contact with, the ability to share information and interests more freely, the ability to keep in contact with friends more frequently, etc. Some downsides: there can be too much contact, people that you don't want to talk to can sometimes force communication or conversation on you, personal information can be available to those with bad intentions, etc. Electronic communication (Facebook, Twitter, texting) can be detrimental if the user gets addicted to it or uses it too much, and I believe that, yes, currently, people in general use it too much. However, the negative effects are avoidable. No one has to create a Facebook or Twitter account, and they don't have to give out their phone number to avid texters. The time I spend on the internet depends on how busy/bored I am, and the number of times I check my phone depends on if I am expecting a message.

There are many pro's and con's to our "digital world". Social contact is great in some cases. It makes communication a lot faster and easier. Online communication is great for casual conversations; if you are just getting to know someone and you don't feel comfortable just talking on the phone or in person, chatting online is a great way to ease into a conversation without all the awkwardness. However, other than the obvious benefits of our electronic devices, there are several setbacks as well. I think we as a society has become too reliant on our electronic devices. It's come to a point now, for some people, that they can't leave a room without their cell phones. There are some people that are way too addicted to their cell phones and computers. You know it's a problem when your relationships in real life are affected. I think that having your phone on you all the time is okay, but when you start ignoring those around you and are more concerned with the conversations on your phone, then it's a problem. Texting and facebook can also cause big-time distractions when trying to do schoolwork. If you can't concentrate on work because you are focusing all your concentration on texting or facebook, then your grades or work load is really going to suffer.
