You have read of prisons or heard of them. The most famous is Alcatraz prison in san francisco. the official escapes is zero, but there is a rumor that a couple of guys escape. Was prison that bad that these guys escape? Prisons have changed in hundred years. Are they as fair as they were in the past?
Are they getting too much freedom/ or not getting enough freedom?
are they overcrowded/or do they have plenty of room to add more prisoners?
what do you think of prisoner having free cable?
How do you think prisoners should spend their time in prison?
Do you think they are there mainly for punishment or for rehablitation?
What do you think of chain gangs or having prisoners work outside as a part of their sentence?
Are the 4x8 cells big enough? should they be bigger or small? If so by how much?
Do the prison get enough state aid to operate right or are they short staff?
How do the prisons today differ from prisons in the 1930's?
Thank you,

I have actually been to the Alcatraz prison in San Francisco, which of course is not in use anymore. I don't think that this prison was any worse than any other prison so that people wanted to escape. In my opinion, a prisoner is like a caged animal who wants to be free. It doesn't necessarily mean the prison is a bad place to be, it's just the freedom factor. Hundreds of years ago, prisons were a lot less caring, and even the simplest crime meant being hanged at the gallows. Today of course, our law system is a lot more lenient. Prisoners are getting way too much freedom now. They can work out, play sports, watch television, etc. These are freedoms that should be taken away from prisoners--they committed a crime and they are still living better than homeless people. I'm not sure what prisoners should have to do while they are in jail, but I know they should be a lot more limited in their activities than they are. I don't think jails are the main punishment for rehabilitation, though. Probation and civil service are used a lot more for more minor crimes these days. Perhaps this is because the jails are getting overcrowded. As long as security is strong and there is no chance for escape, I see no problem with chain gangs. I don't know much about the size of cells, so I don't have an opinion on if they should be bigger or smaller. There should probably be more staff in prisons to keep the place more secure and inescapable.

My feeling toward your question is prisons should only have cable in one area for the prisons which have been on best behavor the television can be eduacational. The pisons should not be too over crowed to help the safety of everyone. Crowded prisons can lead to more fights and more prisoners in the heath care areas. The question about working outside should only be for best behavor prisonors. Chain gangs working outside can lead to excaping idea if these prisonors are already acting up.
I think that 40 or 50 years ago prisons were too easy to escape from. Not so much anymore though. I think that most prisons have gotten done what they had to do to make sure that the prison would be secure and safe for all of it's prisoners. I think that as criminals, the people in our jails are allowed to get away with too much. They should be given no more than 1 hour a day to be outside, and I think they should only be given 2 hours outside of theirs cells. And 1 hour should be used to eat and shower. There are some prisons in the country that are definitely overcrowded, but I'm sure that others can fit many more prisoners. I can't believe that prisoners would be allowed to have free cable. I personally think that nothing should be given to them for free. If they are going to be in jail for committing a crime, then they should be forced to do something that will give them a responsibility. I say we need to give all of our prisoners jobs while they are in jail. They don't deserve to get anything for free. I think that a lot of prisoners are in jail for punishment, when in reality they need to be there for rehabilitation. I think that having prisoners work outside for their sentence is a good idea as long as there are enough guards there to make sure nobody can escape. I think the cells are a good size. Priosons today are much more secure, and more supervised then they were in the 1930's

I think prisons are getting over crowded. I think there should be more rehabilitation in prisons-maybe that would keep people from committing crimes more than once. I think there should be more counseling and education. I do think prisoners shoud work outside of prison, like in a chain gang. If we have to use tax dollars to pay for their incarceration then lets put them to work. I don't think the cells need to be bigger and the prsoners don't need cable tv. They're there because they committed a crime. They need to be rehabilitated, but don't have to watch ESPN to get rehabilitated. They don't need to have luxury suites to get rehabilitated either. I have heard the prisons are overcrowded yet the staffing levels aren't going up. I do think the prisons need to have plenty of staffing to make sure there aren't any riots, breakouts, or fights.

Prisons these days are gettig more over populated and are hve more speacial treatment than what it was like back 50 years ago. Now in the prisons the inmates get to have free cable and access to the internet. Its like they are living free off of the tax payers money that is comming out of my paycheck each week. When Paris Hilton was in prison for 23 days there has been talk about her getting her own mail, cell phone, cabel access, internet access, and also she got a different prison outfit. Didn't the judge order her to spend the full 45 days in jail? It seems like that when celeberties go to jail they get specail treatment than me if I was in jail. The 4X8 cells are just fine for them to spend their centance in. It also seems like the prisons are letting their prisoners get more freedom as the year goes by than what they used to get 50 years ago.

I believe that it isn't about that the prisons are so bad they want out it is about the lifestyle they had before was more free than prisons. I also think that it depends on the prisoner on wether they think the prisons are bad or not. If the prisoner came from a really poor backround than they probably think prisons aren't bad. Since you get hot meals and get to watch tv. On the other hand if you come from a somewhat well off backround, than prisons don't give you as much freedom as you once have had.
I do believe that prisons are not bad at all. Prisoners get 3 hot meals a day and get to lots of things. If they have good behavor they get to watch tv and go outside and other things. They are prisoners they have done something bad to get their, so we put them in prison to take their freedom away but really that hasen't happened at all. I think prisons are to leanent and need to be more strick.

I think prisons have changed since the 1930's because in the past the officers would tourture the prisoners and was able to get away with it. Today, with the advances in tecnology, the officers cannot get away with it as much. I feel they pour enough money into the prison systems, maybe even too much. They place many people in these prisons in which it my not be nessary, instead looking for a ulterior method of punishment. Many of these people, such as DUI and durg possesion prisoners, cloud be sent to a rehab and serve time there or at home on house arrest. The prisoners that should be at the prisons should be given even less freedom. Givening these prisoners too much freedome is the reason they form gangs in jail and they may get into more trouble because of the people they met while serving time. Also the point in sending these people to jail is to try to make them "learn their lesson", but in return they meet more connections and learn even more from their crimal peers. As far as what they should do with their time while they are behind bars is go to school, work as much as possible, and in their "free" time they should only be given a book to read. They should not be able to watch cable television, other than the news.

As far as i am concerned the problems with prisons today are that most are overcrowded and understaffed. what is our world coming to that the free peoples tax dollars are paying for those who are imprisoned. i am concerned at the fact that we can not control our society any better. Of course the sentence and the conditions of the jail depends on what crime has been commited. for instance if someone commits a murder, the conditions of thier cell shouldn't matter because in my opinion they should be killed. the amount of freedom that a prisoner gets also depends on the extent of the crimes. i fully believe in the chain gang work programs for prisoners. they need to earn thier keep in a prison. as far as the free cable thing goes i dont think prisoners should even have televisions there are people in this world that are starving to death because they cannot afford food but our prisoners are fully nourished. does that make any sense? you might as well tell the people who live on the street to commit a crime because then they would have a place to stay, food to eat, and clothes for thier backs.

I think that in the past prison was easier to escape form and now it is harder. I do not think it is fair that they have free cable. I think that they should be working while they are in prison. Our tax dollars are paying for them to be in prison. I don't think that it is right for them to have free cable and I don't think that they all do. I know one guy who just got released after serving three years in prison. When he got out he couldn't believe what cell phones looked like today because he said he hadn't seen any, or been able to watch t.v. I do think prisoner's should be allowed to go outside frequently as long as they are obeying the rules in prison and on their best behavior. A sociology class I was in took a field trip to three prisons and I saw the part of the prison that they kept the mentally ill patients. The guard that was guiding us said that most of them became mentally ill from not being allowed out of their cells very much and very limited time outside. I think just becuase they commited a crime we shouldn't put them in situations that would cause them to become mentally ill. Then if they ever do get out of prison we are going to be spending more tax dollars on them becuase they won't be able to get a job and support themselves. I think that there should be more education, counseling , and work in prisons so that when they are released they can do something else other than something to get them right back in there.

I think prisons are fine the way they are. People are put there for punishment. People that are going to prison, have more freedom than anyone. They think, before their crime, that they are invinsable. They think they can do anything without getting caught, and this is why it is such a shock for them to go to prison and be confined for a while. For prisoners that have committed a crime like driving on a suspended license, or little crimes like that, i feel that free cable is ok for an hour a day. Nothing more, they are prisoners and have done something bad. I think prisons are for punishment, but while the prisoner is there, they might be rehabilitated. Most prisoners go back again though. Prison cells are big enough for the criminal. They should not get a bigger room because this is punishment. Most criminals are let out daily and for them to mainly just sleep in a 4X8 cell should not be that big of a deal. They committed a crime and should be punished. Prisons today are different than prisons in the 1930's because they are much more high tech and are very up on their security. There are much less escapees and probably less problems due to the technology and highly trained guards around prisons.

The prison system is something I hope I never learn more about. I use to work for Habitat for Humanity and the prison in Decature made the frames for our houses. I meet the guys that volineered to do this and they were great. They all felt like they had a chance to give to there comunity rather than take. A frind oh mine was a warden at a female prison and he saw is share of good and bad. The main thing is if you don't want to rehablitate then you should not get any perks. Giving people freedom in prison can be a good thing but needs to be bassed on the prisoner.

The prisons back then were not the nice places they are now. Prisoners did not have rights. They were numbers in the system and not treated as human beings.
I think they have too much freedom when it comes to things that are not necessities to living. Let them read the bible or classic books or educational books. They do not need to watch 45 cable channels or talk on the phone more than a couple times a week if that.
Prisoners are people who have done something wrong and are there to be punished.
Sometimes they are in long enough to get rehabilitated for different work out in the world. Sometimes they are only there for a couple days or a week. Not long enought to get rehabilitated but maybe long enough to think about what they have done wrong.
Chain gangs are not humane. Manual labor outside the prison while being extremely well supervised for some prisoners that only have minor offences is acceptable as it keeps them from having "Idle hands that do the Devil's work".
The cell size should actually be in proportion to the size of the inmate and if he/she has a roommate. 4 ft by 8 ft should be a size cell for a small person with no roommate.
The prisons never get enough aid as they have to estimate how many inmates and guards they will have working. If the numbers, go up and they do most times, then the money they get just does not match the need.
Prisons today are more comfortable and geared toward the safety of the prisoner not the people who take care of them. Better food, bedding, medical services, prisoner rights and lots of extras make the prisons of today almost seem like a Super Hilton Hotel than the roach motel of the 1930's prison.

It is animal nature not to be inprisoned so they escaped.
The prisons now are more fair with more priveleges than in the past.
They are not free but they are still isolated from society.
There are some that are overcrowded but then again there are some that are sitting empty.
No Free cable, network tv only and then a limited amount of time.
Prisoners should spend their time providing a service to society to help pay for their keep in the prison system.
They are there for punishment as most can not be rehabilitated in the prison.
I think chain gangs are a good idea with proper supervision.
4x8 cell are pretty darn small.
Cells should be bigger at least 9x9 cell should be suffient.
Not enough state aid because citizens do not feel that they should have to pay for someone else who has broken the law.
Prisons in the 1930 you had fewer privleges, fewer conveniences, and mostly likely did not commit another crime when you left prison.
Today's prisons tend to be glorified vacation spots for a few and they do not seem rehabilitated when they leave. They even run their criminal activity inside the prison.
Tom
Prison was never like home that is why prisoners had to get back to what was normal by escaping.
Prisons were dark, bad food and medical, poor working conditions, and handlers that were not always nice to the prisoners.
Today they get way to many freedoms. Freedoms that even the poor people that have nothing do not get. Good medical and dental, clothing, roof over their head, good food, phone and tv privleges, etc.
Prisons are over crowded with those people that some times did not have anyone to guide them to do the right thing. And that is a great many people.
Punishment for crimes that they committed that sometimes they had no choice but to participate or sometimes there because they just like to commit crime over and over.
Chain gangs are something that is done in foreign countries but then again they do not have the crimes that we do.
Making the prisoners contribute in some way is a good way to make them think better of themselves and maybe make a difference when they get out.
The cells are pretty much standard sizes. they are not meant to be comfortable.
There is never enough money to pay the guards for the risks that they take.
Prisons today are cleaner and healthier than the ones in the 1930s.
