Jenna's question on the effect of t.v. and video games on children.

Do you think t.v. and video games are affecting children today? If so, in what ways? Do you think that children are seeing too much violence in video games and on t.v.? How do you think this will affect their lives later on in life?

Here are some interesting websites about this topic:

Thanks for your imput!

I believe that the viedo games and the movies that have violence that children should not watch or play the video games unitl they have fully understaned the concept that these games and movies are only fake and that the parrents need to do a better job of raising thier children. For instance my sister has three children one boy and two girls which are the ages of 4,3, and 2. She does not let them watch any voilent movies or lets them play games that teeneagers are playing. They are only alowed to watch what is on PBS, PBS Kids, and the Disney Channel. This what all parrents need to do so that their kids don't go walking around with fake guns in their pockets and to disrespect thir parrents. When the parrents look back when their kids were innocent and sweet and now their cursing and fighting in school and at home the need to disipline their children and be more stricfull on them with their school work and what they want to do in thie lives.

I feel that TV and video games are affecting children today very much. Children are influenced very easily by things they see, and if they see things on TV and video games they are most likely going to do these things. There are so many stations on television that show many innappropraite things that kids watch then they feel it is ok for them to do these things. Also, in video games I feel there is way too much violence. My brother plays these types of video games, and it is scary to watch. These video games let children and teenagers kill each other and choose all types of weapons. To me I feel that this is a horrible thing to do and this influences children that weapons are not very bad and in some cases, it is ok to do these horrific things. I feel that kids that do not have a balanced life will be affected by these video games and TV shows more than the kids that are involved in other things. If a child is sitting at a TV all day, they are going to get brainwashed. But if a child is involved with sports, clubs and other things other than just TV and video games, I do not feel these types of shows and games will affect their life.

Of course these are affecting children, some positive some negative. But, years ago children would see people being beatin in the steet for haveing a differance of opinon. I don't think violance is a new concept that our children are all of a sudden interduced to but we are able to see and hear the effects more with the media.

I do think violence in television and video games can affect children. It will affect them later in life. They will see a lot of violence and think it's okay as adults. They may think nothing about it to get into a fight on the street, steal cars, carry guns or commit burglary. Some of these shows show the consequences, such as getting sent to prison, but they don't really show prison life. If children are going to be allowed to watch those shows and play those games then I think the consequences need to be explained to them. I don't think that's happening. I don't think we can totally blame the t.v. and video games. Most of the blame falls on the parents. They dictate what their children see and hear. Again, if they're going to allow their children to see the violence they need to explain the consequences.

I think that t.v. and video games affect children today, but only to a certain extent. I believe that if parents find video games or television to be too violent for their children to be watching, then they shouldn't be allowing their kids to watch these shows or play these games. That's why all movies and games have a rating which shows the age that people are supposed to be at to be able to buy certain movies and video games. No store that sells R rated movies or M rated video games will sell these games to anyone who is not over 18. I know for a fact that these stores will check people's ID to make sure they are of age. As far as violent movies and games affecting children later in their lives, I don't think that this can be proven. If a child sees something on t.v. or in a video game, then they should know that it is not reality. A child who is seeing suck images should be old enough and mature enough to distinguish the difference between reality and fantasy.

I really do think that the content in television and video games these days is a terrible infuence on young kids. Sure, there are such things as educational television and educational video games, but how many kids are you going to see choose to watch these on their own occord? Most curse words have been accepted into normal culture now, being accepted on television, the radio, and also plenty of video games. Being a parent myself, I don't want my child learning how to say certain words from a TV show. Also, just a couple of days ago I saw a show on TNT network in which a couple was clearly naked and having sex--it was ok to show the sides of the two as they were entwined, just as long as the male and female parts could not be clearly seen. I mean, the producers of shows today are just taking as much as they can get now-a-days, and I hate it. It seems like you can't find a single video game anymore where people aren't getting stabbed, shot or blown up. Some things can scar kids for life and even influence their behavior. For example, if they see someone they like on TV, even in a cartoon, kids are very likely to emmulate what they see and that could cause some serious damage to themselves or others. Bottom line: parents should be as careful as they can when exposing their kids to these images.

I do think that video games are affecting children today. It is a blessing and a curse. kids that play video games have better eye, hand corridtion. They could use this skill as a operator of machinery. It could also hurt them. they could become lazy and not want to do a thing around the house. At a certain age limit i think that they could watch some violence. but the younger kids I don't think that they need to watch or play those games.
When they grow up they have to make the choice, to become something great, or just sit on thier butt and just play video games.

I defineltely think that t.v. and video games are affecting children today. When they sit around playing violent video games they go outside and play with their friends the same way. I think that parents today need to do a better job of restricting what their choldren play and watch because their is so much that they could get into these days. There are many cartoons on t.v. that are made for kids, but they have tons of violence in them. With my boys, I never let them have toy guns or watch violent shows on t.v., but when my oldest boy started preschool, he just learned it from the other kids, which means they are seeing this stuff somewhere. I think that all the video games kids are playing are going to make them more violent and agressive as they get older.

The children of today are effected in way of physical acttivy and also there stress levels are higher than when i grew up. So of the children are gaining weight by playing vidieo game. The game system can stress out the children so they are a stressed out person when they are older. If the game system is not a contunious on for hours.

When I was young I remember watching saturday morning cartoones and seeing Tom try to kill Jerrry every weekend. Growing up I would play Mortial Kmobat on my playstation and watch many violent movies like eight heads in a duffle bag. I did not turn out violent and I have never been in trouble for fighting or acting in a violent way. With saying this I don't believe that violence on T.V., in video games, or even in the news, has any affect on the behavior of children. I think it goes back to the parents and what they tought their kids. Almost everyone knows that what they see in games or on television is not real and that is not the way to behaive. Looking back and watching the movies I watched as a kid I realized how violent those movies are. I did not turn out violent because my mother tought me better than that and tought me the difference between reality and fiction. I believe that fighting and violence is also human nature and even if children see these imiges, they are not nessarly to blame. I think seeing adults in their everyday lives, such as relitives and close family friends, are what influnce children to become violent.

i am all for the banishment of television all together. i personaly have not wathed a television in probably a year. i think that parents these days just sit thier children in front of a TV to make them be quiet. dont get me wrong i did watch tv when i was a kid. we all did. the problem is that kids these days are not learning the value of the outdoors. most kids have never felt the grass on thier bare feet. i dont think that the violence on the games and tv is the problem. i have a problem that makes me not understrand other peoples problems i think that "oh, your depressed? get over it". therefore i dont see how people can blame violence on videogames. it all boils down to the lack of true parenting. how this will affect them later in life i dont know, but i do know that it sure wont teach them any parenting skills.
