Highschoolers main focus

Im Benjamin from John's Monday evening class please respond!!!

How effective do you think it would be for high school students, freshman to senior, to focus on a major for college*for instance taking psychology classes to decide whether they want to pursue a career in psychology? Do you think that it would deter students form pursuing a high school diploma or higher education?

I dont think that it is too early for a highschooler to think about what he or she want to do in college. if that student want to purse a college life then i think that they should start thinking about what they want to do now instead of later. Planning ahead always help.

I think it is never too soon to think about your future and the path you want to take. Take a look back to your childhood when you would say I want to be such and such when I grow up. While they are in high scool they can take extra classes in areas they want to study in college and also maybe work along side with others who have the same goals. Maybe if students would start thinking about their college major in high school then maybe they wouldn't be so confused on what classes they need to take in college. The advantage of focusing ahead of time they won't be taking classes they really don't need and won't be in their senior year in college and find out they need to take a class they could of taken before to beable to graduate.

i think getting a head start on your future plans is very effective. Starting to think about what you're going to do in life can help you break down your choices. Planning early is an excellent way to get going in the right direction. leah perde

I think that because highschoolers don't truly know what they want... They shoud use electives wisely--to find out where their strengths/interests lie. I also believe that the curricculum should get all students ready for college by the time they graduate. By that, i mean: Everyone takes math-through basic trig, science through basic physics, and english to the point where exceeding college 101 requirements is easy!

hope this helps

no I don't think it is to early for high schoolers to start thinking about what they want to do for their carrer or future. high schoolers should start to relieze that time is going by fast and sooner or later they will relieze that they need to move on... mom and dad aren't going to be there all the time.. I guess that the ones that want to wait or don't know, which is ok becuase there is still college but by then you should be pursueing your education in the field you plan to further your furture in. All i know is that when they decid eto wait for college they will be trying to crame everything they need in little amounts of time..

I think that this is an excellent idea. I don't think there would be a down side to having students in high school focus more on life after high school.
I think, if any, the effect this would have would be to remove some of the mystic surrounding higher education and make the idea more approachable to every student.

I don't think that in the students should be worrying about those things in High School....the students are being their to get there basic education. Not all students go to college so they dont need to worry about that.

I really think it would be very hard for a high school student to take college classes for a specific study. I think they are to young. There minds are wondering all over the place. No!

I think that taking college bond classes in high school is a very good idea. I just graduated from high school and at my school it is required of you to take two electives before you can graduate. These electives are set up to your advantage in pursuing a college degree. There are classes that range form Child Development courses to Auto Body courses. The main goal of these classes is in order to help to decide on a college study.

Taking these classes in high school have a lot of advantages. It can save you a lot of money. Taking a class in high school may make you decide that is deffinatly not something you want to do in the future. High school classes are free..college classes are not. It's better to get an idea about what you want to do until its to late and your out in the real world.

I think that it might actually help them. So many college freshmen end up changing their majors two to three times because they try the first thing that they thought they might want to do and then find that their interest is really in something else or it is too hard for them. If they have some classes in high school then they could give it a try and see if that is really what they want to do or not. I don't think it would deter students from getting their high school diploma. For some I think that it might deter them going on to a higher education especially if the classes they take in high school are harder than they anticipated.

I think it is a good idea for them to start considering ideas for their future while in high school. I doubt that these high schoolers are going to be very focused though and serious enough to keep up with it and pursue that actual college major. I am a freshman right now and I have already changed my major more than ten times. It could help to offer psychology classes and health career classes while in high school just to see if they are actually interested in it or not. I found out my junior year of high school that nursing wasn't right for me. I'm glad I wasted that time in high school figuring that out than now.

I believe that all depends on how sure or how serious a high schooler is about what they want to do with their lives, some have it all thought out while others like me wasn't too sure until they started school. Yet if they are sure i believe it would be very helpful if they focused more on what they want to major in college in high school, and while in high school it would allow the student some "play" time. Which would allow them to try a couple things to see if one of them is what they want to do. I don't think it would deter students at all, since most highschool's either don't or can't go into as much depth of a subject as in college because of time constraints.

I think the intentions are good, but I don't think it would be effective. I think high-school should be spent trying as many different things as possible. This way the student gets to test the water before jumping in. College students usually end up changing their major several times so I don't think high-school students are going to be able to pick something and stick with it. I think the majority of high-school students would just pick which one they thought would be the easiest. Plus, high-schools arn't equiped to provide students this opportunity. It would take a lot of extra classrooms, teachers, and supplies to provide all these extra classes.

Good Luck,

I really think it would be a good idea to learn early on what you like and don't like. I am taking a Psychology class and i think it is a fun subject, but did not know that it is a deep subject, and requires a lot of attention in order to pass it. If i had taken it in high school I would not be wasting time know in college to find that out.

Sadly today you need a high school diploma if you want to have a good job. Today many jobs are looking at how many year of school you have and whether or not you have a high school diploma.
I really don't think that high school really makes you think of what you want to purue for. There are many classes in high school, but you main take some class because your friends are in it or you want a better application for college. I think high school should only be taken for 1 or 2 years and then head to college. Mainly what you didn't get in high school you can get in college.
When I got of high school I didn't know what to be or what to pursue for. However, here I am taking a career in policing to see how would that turn out. It's not really helpful.
