Can Gaming Save the World?

As students in college, those of you reading this might be or you might know someone who is interested in games. Whether it is video games, board games, or dice games you most likely know a "gamer," and you have probably played a type of game before. Games have been around for a long time and they have made people happy and helped them come together throughout the word. Personally, I like to unwind after a day at school playing a video game on my Xbox at home or at a friend's house. Today there are a wide variety of games and different ways to play them. From healthier motion controlled games to controllers that require movement, to the ever recognizable game controller where you only use your thumbs. In your opinion do you think gaming is good? Do you think it is bad? Please watch the video posted in the link and tell me your thoughts and opinions about it. Do you think that in times of crisis those gamers can, in fact, change the world?

Video games can be both good and bad. It just depends on how the player uses them. The player could be using video games maybe for entertainment, studying, researching, learning, etc. There are things that are good about video games such as learning something, like you said it can improve problem solving, and people who research these games for their job. Video games can also be a great stress reliever and great for entertainment.

Video games aren't entirely bad at all but if used wrongly then they could be seen as that. If someone spends hours and hours sitting there playing video games, they may not be sitting there trying to learn anything at all without ever getting out into the real world. It just depends. However, spending so much time in video games limits your physical activity and eats up much of your time to do other things. Enjoy in moderation!

I think playing video games are o.k. just as long as it is kept in the right prospective. I say that because there are so many people that get hooked on the games and can't function or choose not to function, due to them becoming addictive to it. There are adults as well as, children that choose games over school work or playing outside(socializing.) Adults will choose games over relationships with their suffocate other, their children for the games or even not look for work because of the games.

I looked at the poster and what I thought about was it gave me the opinion that playing video games will solve all problems, which I don't believe to be true. In my opinion, playing video games is just that playing a game. The last time I played a video game was about two years ago and that has not change. People need to get their priorities together. Parents should give a time limit of how long their kids should be able to play and adults should only play the games when they have taken care of their family and if the game is played it should be a family thing.

Unless, "gamers" can discover a cure for cancer, can end homelessness, create more jobs or end world piece, then no gamers can not change the world, especially, in a positive way.

In my opinion, It is really up to the individual. Me personally, I'm not much of a gamer. I do, however, like tom play card games, and some video games. Today's games are a lot more sophisticated then those in my time when Atari came out. In some ways gaming can be good, due to you can exercise,or it keeps the kids occupied for a while, also games can be a teaching tool, they teach kids how to read, and they help some with coordination, and motor skills. I guest what I'm saying, there is good and bad in everything. It's up to the individual what they chose to do with video games and such. Now I watched maybe 15 seconds of that video. the lady to me sounds crazy. You can not play games and expect to solve the problems of the world. A game is just that a game. Yes you can learn to read or write, but those aren't games those are educational devices set up to make learning fun. So there is a difference. Yes they are fun, relieve stress, etc. But change the world, noway. But then again they way society is today there's no telling what the future holds.

I think gaming can be a very good stress reliever. I know from being in college personally that it can be a very stressful day by just putting a lot of pressure on yourself.I think a lot of people take gaming as a bad thing by it can be a good thing by i said earlier a great stress reliever. But i do see how people think it is a bad thing such as not getting enough exercise and not getting outside enough.
I don't see gaming changing the world at all. I can see gaming helping out our economy by gambling and buy games but i don't see it changing the world. I haven't seen a gamer get a lot of headlines for changing or saving the world from anything.

I do not play video games but sometimes I like to play board games with friends. Video games can be good and bad. Video games and board games can help bring people together and be helpful when someone is bored. Sometimes people are spending way too much of their week playing video games and that can cause problems. Video games can cause problems when a person is sitting down all day and not getting any physical activity. Also, educational video games would be better to play than the violent ones.

An interesting topic may i add, my brother is a hard core gamer matter fact he does nothing but game all day, i kind of wish he would come outside and go places but that's alright because i remember when i was his age that's all i would do. Video games saving the world? ehhhh i would say they can help with therapy or calming someone down, but nothing close to saving the world. i am all for video games but like i said before moderation is key.

I think video games can be good, I remember playing board games, card games, and action games, like ping-pong,pool, and pitch and catch with my family. So after all that I think those wee games, can be educational, and great for excersising. I think some people can get lost in videos games, and forget to get out there and enjoy the world. Dont know about gamers saving the world, maybe if it came to fast hand controls, or figuring out where the enemy is hiding i guess so.

That was a very interesting link. Before I viewed it, I remembered an episode of Bomb Patrol where a young soldier used a game controller to operate a remote robot used to place c4 on a roadside bomb. That alone made me think of how these skills that are gained from gaming can be utilized. I did have a cousin who was addicted to online gaming though and it literally ruined his life. He didn't even leave the computer to eat. I think everyone has some gift and if that is your gift you should go for it. I think Jane McGonigal makes some great points.

i dont think that games or video games can be the best because for young children these days because they like to imitate what they playor what they see on the tv. then on the other hand they have some video games that are educatinal , to me those are the games that need to be made instead of grand theft auto, some thing that will influence kids to go to school and try to get an education instead of trying to become the next big king pin or the next murderer.

I have never really played videos but I could see where people would say that it would be good for kids. You have to think quickly in order to not get killed or whatever will happen. I could also see how it would affect kids in their learning skills because it would take time away from their school work. But its just a personal opioion.

I think gaming could be good or bad. It could be a good thing because it lets the person have fun and a fantasy land where they can really express themselves and show what they are made of. At the same time, studies have shown that gaming can lead to violence, and i completely agree. Games such as Grand Theft Auto, or World of War craft show that it is fun to shoot people and kill others when it is not okay. I think another reason that gaming is not good is because some people game so much that they are lost in the fantasy world and they are not living their lives and they will have so social life.

Gaming itself is neither good nor bad… it all depends on how you take what you see and use that… those questions also make me remember an old saying “To much of any one thing is bad for you…” As for my comments on the vid…. I am a huge gamer… but even I know if all you are doing is sitting there wanting to be someone else and not working towards who you want to be then you are not going to change the world, not saying you can’t, because any one person can change the world, Just look at Hitler, Or Gandhi, or even some of the great conquers of history. So basically what it feels like this woman is saying is if you guys (gamers) get off your butts you can change the world if you put your mind to it… something we all know and have witnessed. We change the world every day… it may not be on as grand a scale as my ad for mentioned people but we are the ones changing it… maybe not for the better maybe not for the worse but it is changing. Also along that line of thought yes anyone can change the world but anyone can destroy it just as easily humans are actually quite violent in nature… just like the rest of the animal world. So I would say that some of these gamers shouldn’t try to save the world… they could very well come to the conclusion that humans should not be here and that would save the world… That is something we need to think about too I would say and I am not sure she has really taken that into account. After all that is one reason why it is so much better to work in a group, multiple points of view and the ability to try to do what is best for all as a whole not just a select few, getting off topic right now but I think governments forget that too much. I think one way to save the world is to find a balance in this world where it can sustain us and everything else... that is not going to happen but it is something to strive for… that can be taken as an evil or a good point of view cause to achieve said balance there are multiple ways…. One and most likely the way that it will is genocide (evil) as we again try to destroy each other for some ungodly reason the other way would be that we find a way to colonize space, be it massive space stations or other planets. Until we find our balance we will continue to fight over the stupid things. Answering your question a little more to the wording yes I think that gamers can save the world in times of crisis but so can a grunt with a gun. We as a race have great power but we are like children with it… we don’t quite get it and we use it poorly.

As a gamer myself I believe that games can help. There are all different types of games that can teach you many different things. Such as time management, learning advice, and ways to make you smarter. Yes, there is amount were gaming is good, but when you play it non stop and do not do anything else in your life then it is bad. Yes, games could change the world as we know it.

Gaming, although not a hobby of my own, can certainly be a therapeutic way of winding down at the end of the night. The pastime is used as a means of entertainment, just like hitting the gym or going to watch a film at the cinema. Gaming, however, can be a little different in terms of the social aspect that in entails. While gaming can be a MMO (Massively Multiplayer Online) social experience, it does seclude users to a certain extent. While gaming does involve social interaction, typically it will be with users that aren’t in the same geographical area. This can cause issues with a user’s ability in real-world social interactions with physical (yes, real!) people. Rarely do I meet a ‘true gamer’ (I.e. someone who plays online several hours a week) that has the social capacity of a non-gamer.

On the other hand, I am only addressing issues that arise if gaming becomes an addiction. Just like anything else, things are typically good for you in moderation. As a pastime, I would say that it’s certainly a constructive use of time that can develop both cognitive and micro muscular skills as well as hand eye co-ordination. With regards to ‘Can gaming save the world?’, I think that the concept is ludacris. I’m sorry but a player who is a fantasy world hero, is exactly that. A fantasy world hero……

i guess it depends on how the person playing the games is using it that determines whether they are good or bad! i personally dont have a care for them. they seem like they can be addicting. video games especially. i do however, like playing cards games. me and my siblings like to gamble! i havent done it in months, but if i were given the chance to, im sure i wouldnt pass it up. i guess the way we play could be considered bad, because you arent suppose to gamble! i dont play videogames, but i know people that do and it seems like thats ALL they will ddo if they could. my son even assks me to buy hima SHOOTING game! i guess when he visited his dad, he was paying Call of Duty and maybe let him play. i try to tell him that those types of games arent suitable for chidlren his age. i would mind getting him a game system and letting him play edducational games. but i dont see how they are SAVING the world!? im not seeing how people who are homeless, in poverty, has aids, cancer, etc are benefitting from games!!!!
