Should college athletes be paid?

  • Do you think college athletes should be paid even though they have scholarships?
  • Do you think college athletes should get paid when they do not receive scholarships?
  • What do you think they should be paid? Money? How much?
  • Should the athletes who play more get paid more or less than the ones who sit on the bench?
  • Should different college sports pay their players different amounts? Why or why not?

No I dont if they are paid that makes them pro's. No, on second question. Arent we all going to school to better are selves and get an education to find a profession we want to work in. Why should they get paid and we dont? I didnt know college players were getting paid, are they? I know some ex-players that played in college and they didnt get paid.

Really? Why can’t the athletes take out a student loan, just like every other poor college student? I’m sorry, its hard when they are “working” or playing ball 50 hours a week.. but you know what else is hard? Working 50 hours a week, with two majors, and enough student loans you’ll be paying off for the rest of your life, not to mention there is absolutely no guarantee you will have a job when you graduate. But wait, some of these athletes have the tough decision to either stay in school, or enter a draft? And you want to pay them $25,000 a year on top of this? Some graduates would kill for a real job that pays $25,000. And please, so many of these athletes get the free meal plans, free housing, etc. What do they need the money for? They are already given the essentials. If they want more, take out a student loan, just like everyone else.

This is the second time I've had to answer this particular question. So I say again, no college athletes should not be paid to play sports in college or to go to college. College is for those who want to learn and excel further in life. Yes we have sports but that is for entertainment, and no I don't feel they should get paid if they don't have a scholarship. Get financial aid and/or loans like the rest of us. Unless your already rich and pay for it yourself. Athletes are very much over-rated,in and out of college. Overall no college should be paying their athletes anything to play sports. That's a waste of tax payers money. People already feel athletes get away with to much in college, because society only want to have a winning team to make their city look good, instead of focusing on the most important part of college, any school level for that matter, is the education. Without it we won't be able to excel, make this world a better place. As for paying athletes that ride the bench less than those who play, if they were getting paid , they should make less because all they're doing is sitting there watching the games like the fans. now on the last question, I don't feel they should be paid with money, just school scholarships, and their room and board if they don't live in their hometown.

I think college athletes should be paid at least a little bit more than they are given because of the money they are given is not enough to live off when they are going to school to play a high major sport and dealing with school. Even though they have scholarships some of these athletes come from homes where they don't know where they are going to sleep or their family couldn't afford to let them come here. College athletes get paid maybe the max of 2500 dollars a month for food, grocery, and stuff to entertain them. Also some of them send it to their parents to help them out. Also the NCAA doesn't allow you to get a job while your playing a sport because they call it "improper benefits" by a local fan giving you a summer time job.
I think that all schools should be paying everyone on their team more money and the same amount. I don't think that any school should pay their players different amount of money because then it would just like playing in the professional sporting world. I think they should get paid at least 5,000 dollars a month at all NCAA schools.

I do not think that college athletes should be paid. They should not be paid because it isn't a job quite yet for the players it is a sport that can lead them to being pro one day and eventually get paid really good money for playing their sport. Players often get scholarships and I think that is payment enough when most other people have to take out loans to pay for their education. I can see how many people think they should get paid for playing a sport in college because the players do not have time to have a job when they have school and a sport to focus on.

Athletes on scholarship in my opinion should not be payed. College athletes that don't receive scholarship should receive scholarships from the school especially if the team is bringing the school income. They shouldn't be payed in cash but should be rewarded in other ways. Starters should not receive anymore money but should get percentages of the jersey sales or some kind of recognition. No but the most popular;ar sports that bring in the most money should be recognized and have the money returned to their program.

I don't think that college athletes should be paid for more than an scholarship. I completely agree with Shane's comment above. And don't major college athletes get scholar ships anyways? I mean why do something for the college if you're not getting anything out of it? Seems like a waste of time. I don't see why they should be pay when some if not all of their tuition is being payed.

I think that athletes should pay sports but should mainly focus on the books, because that persons sport days will only last for a period of time or if they are injured their career would be over but if they obtain a degree while they are in school then they have something to fall back on.

What happen to going to school to learn a trade and if they do not receive a scholarship for then how good are they in their sport. I don't think that they should get paid, they are not professionals. They should be able to get a scholarship for attending classes. No Money! If you are still talking about "School," Then NON, whether they are on the bench or not.

I think that being a "college" athlete/student, with emphasises on "student," should be the focus, play the sport at school, but focus on a more meaningful career.

No
I dont see why just because you're an athlete you should get paid...
Am i getting paid to be an art major? NO and they shouldnt get paid for playing sports, if you wanna get paid for it become a pro because thats the whole point of playing sports in college anyways. If they can't afford it, then they should take out a loan or apply for financial aid like every other student!

I do not think that college students should be paid for sports. Hell it's a damn past time. I see no reason for them to get a free paycheck every month. There's plenty of students that aren't receiving financial aid or any type of income to support their education, but they aren't getting paid for playing sports or ant past time for that matter. If what they are getting isn't enough then maybe it's time to make sacrifices and get a part-time job. I know plenty college athletes that's working a part-time job.

I think they should offer free tuition or a portion of for all players on the team. Although it is an honor to play on a college team, why recruit the top players and pay their way when there may be another equally valuable player on the bench that at some point you may need to rely heavily upon or may contribute in an equally valuable way but perhaps their contribution is not really on the court.

I dont think they should be paid for playing college ball. They are here at college to better ourselves. Not to pay them for playing something they are suppose to "love" and if they was good enough to play college ball they should be here in college with scholarships that should be enough pay!!! They are in college playing ball to possibly go pro, and when they are there they're going to make a bigger salary than more people combined. I believe athletes should stop being ungrateful, if they want to be payed, get a JOB!

I don't think that any type of college athlete should be paid at all, besides the scholarships they receive. College athletes go to school just as any other student goes to school and they should have no special treatment at all. If colleges were to pay their athletes people would see tuition sky rocket, ticket prices increase, and less people would be more likely to attend colleges where tuition is extremely expensive.

The simple answer to your first question is no, because while being a pro athlete is a worth wile endeavor I do not think it is more important than say a career as a doctor or a teacher. For Colleges to make money off of these athletes is justified, not because they recruited them but think of it like this they are being “taxed” for using the college’s facilities. But I think that they should be treated like any other club, and have to earn their own money for their equipment and renting time on the court/field, but this is not the case they are pampered by the college. They get perks and it does not seem like they are there for anything else than a “better” chance at becoming pro. Now if they are there for school they should not be getting paid for playing a sport because their tuition is already being handled and they are getting paid a lot via the knowledge and tuition that they would have had to pay anyway if they were just going to school. Again I don’t think college athletes should be paid for PLAYING a game or else you would have such and influx of “students” that are only there for the chance to be seen by recruiters that the college would suffer academically I think. And let’s face it pros are overpaid, all pro sports started as something someone did on the weekend they had a regular and productive job the rest of the time. I think the sports would eventually become flooded by the type of athletes you would not want to see on the court/field, the ones that take things way to serious and would be better off boxing of mixed martial arts competitions. So to make my point nice and blunt college athletes are being paid by their tuition and knowledge. They should NOT be paid.

I don't think that college athletes should get paid to play, scholarship or no scholarship. School is for learning and progressing in our career, not for getting paid to play.

The fact is the NCAA is meant to be an amateur league, and as such, the players do not receive any monetary payment. Do the colleges that the players attend monetize them? Yes, of course they do, but in return the player receives a free education and a wealth of exposure to professional scouts. In terms of college sports being less intense should the players be paid – I don’t necessarily think so. In my opinion, the reason behind college basketball being more intense than professional basketball has more to do with their followers. College students tend to be a lot more passionate for their team, and as such the players tend to work harder for their fans.

My brother, Joe, plays basketball for the University of Indianapolis. Their program is a huge money maker, but Joe is receiving a free education at $50,000 a year, and so he gets to graduate debt free and play for a professional team somewhere in Europe. Is this not enough?

No its not fair to the other students who are just regualrs , and No, on second question. Arent we all going to school to better are selves and get an education to find a profession we want to work in. Why should they get paid for playing a sport. its not like most of them are going on the pros or anything. its not their job so they shouldnt get paid. Why cant they take out a student loan like everyone else does? I know people that are currently playin a college sport and they dont get paid so why should this even be an option?

No, why should they be getting paid when they are getting a scholarship to play. They should not be paid at all, is it fair for students who have other scholarships that do not get paid. If there getting paid all the players on the team should get a fair amount. NO, cause there should not be getting payed to play a college sport. This is ridiculous if you want to get paid get a job, or become a professional athlete.

im kind of undecided on this. i often wondered if they got paid or not. i guess they dont. i can see why they would want to...especially those who play for a big school. do they get something (the school) if the sport teams go to like national champaionships or something? i dont pay too much attention to college sports. they just arent as interesting as professionals if you ask me. i guess if they are gettin a full scholarship, that is their payment. but those who arent, yes, they should get something. i dont think they should be paid much, and i dont think those who are riding the bench should get paid as much if they arent playing.
on the other hand, being a student myself, i will think its unfair. im not gettin paid for what i am doing, so why should they? so, idk, i can understand both sides!!

I don’t think that college athletes should be paid to play in sports in college or even for that matter go to college. College is about learning and building your career and yes of course having fun. I feel like they should have to take out loans just like the rest of us or even use financial aid. Leave getting paid for sports to the pros. It’s in my eyes a waste of the tax payers money because you’re paying for them to play and go to college.

No, I think they should only get paid if they go pro. They should not be getting paid especially if they have a scholarship. You choose to do a college sport and their are people out there that don't get scholarships and have to pay out of pocket just to get educated and all they are doing is playing a sport. That would be crazy if they got paid for that. I just think it is unfair in general, no one else is getting paid for having to learn or play sports. Your only playing for a college level.
