Is It Fair????

So, you were brought to a different country when you were just a child; you learned the language, the culture, the way of being. You grow up feeling like you are from that country, respecting and following the laws like most other citizens should. You also have these god-given abilities in that you out-perform most people in athletics and in the class room.

When you get an offer for a scholarship, like any young person you take it with dreams of giving yourself a great life. At the climax of your excitement, the school calls you and tells you that because you are not born in the country you reside in, they are taking the scholarship from you.

Is it fair for them to take the scholarship from you? You work as hard as anyone else and out- perform most people, and you did not cheat. Why are they allowed to take the scholarship back?Because of politics? It was not your choice to be brought to this country, so is it fair that you must pay a penalty?

This depends on whether or not it explicitly said that one must be a natural born citizen in order to receive the benefits. There are some things, that for differing reasons, are only available to natural born citizens. I don't know much about scholarships, but I do know that the Navy will not allow foreign nationals of any kind join their nuclear power program, mainly for security reasons. Virtually all of the information is classified NOFORN or above. Is this right? Maybe, I can see their reasoning, but a natural born citizen can be just as much of a threat as a foreign national.

I do think it would be wrong to take a scholarship just because someone is a foreign national (unless it is clearly stated that one must be naturally born to receive the benefit) and I would think that there would have to be some other underlying reason. Otherwise, they could/should be open to lawsuits.

As long as you're leagaly in this country there should be no reason you couldnt get a scholarship. If you live here, born here, grew up here, you shouldnt be denied a scholarship, it is not fair.

I do not believe that it is fare to take a scholarship from someone after they have earned it. It should not matter were they from and what ethnicity they are if they earned the scholarship they should be able to receive it. To me that sounds like discrimination which is wrong in this situation.

First, you say that you didn't choose to come to this country--but you have chosen to stay, right? I mean, you could always leave if you're treated more unfairly here than in your own country.

I am an adult student returning to school after 20 years away. I have children to support on a single income. But there was no scholarship for me to apply for to help me pay for school. I have to pay everything myself. I don't think it's fair, either, but what defines you in life is how you respond to unfairness, how you get back up when you have been kicked down repeatedly. My advice is to stop yelling "unfair!" and to make your own plan to succeed despite the unfairness. Life is hardly ever fair!

Aaron, I think you were ripped off. America has plenty of foreign students going to colleges on schlorships for academics and theirs are not being taken away.

I think they took advantage of you as a student with very good skills at your sport. Blame the school, not politics.

I think you need to keep on plugging along and do the work. Make sure you stay in school because someone that works as hard as you will go places. Don't let an entity take away your dream!

Nothing is really fair, which sucks. I do not believe it was right to deny you the scholarship in this situation, but that is just my opinion. Early on I learned that this country sounds super great with all our laws on freedom of speech and voting for people in the government and what not (too much to get into), but there are a ton of rules, rules, and more rules. Sometimes a person gets caught up by these rules or laws what ever, but most of the time you just have to accept them and move on to a different avenue.

I don't believe this is fair. You should be allowed to keep the scholarship, after all they already gave it to YOU! You did not choose to move to another country. You did not cheat. Why should YOU be punished? I don't believe this is fair to you. You worked hard in jr high, and high school and now you are working hard in college so why should you be punished? I do not agree with this at all!

I believe that if your green card and if you have went to a school in the U.S. for most of your life than you should be considered as a U.S. citizen. Therefore, it should not be fair that you get your scholarship taken away. If you work hard for something you should be rewarded. This is somewhat an act of discrimination and our country frowns upon that subject, so there is no difference there.

Are you a citizen? If you are not then yes, you would be excluded from receiveing a scholarship from a university for athletics. Do international students get scholarships, yep. Check on whats available and reapply dont give up because you reach a speed bump in the road. If you where a citizen and they offered you a scholarship and you where convicted of a felony that summer before your first semester, no scholarship for you. There are various ways of losing.
