Does music make you smarter?
Please check out this link before you answer:

Are students who play a musical instrument smarter than the average student? Do you think that playing an instrument when you are young makes you more capable of doing well in school? Why or why not?
Thanks!

I think this is a true statment. Playing an instrument can be very good to a student. Just learning the notes and instrument it self can make you smarter. I do think playing an instrument while you are young makes you more capable of doing well in school.

I think this is true because the younger they start playing an instrument the more they'll be into music instead of drugs and parties. I think that if a child plays an instrument at a young age their brain with learn more since they are counting the beat and notes which can help alot with math. If they become more interested in reading music they will be more into homework and studying which means higher grades where as someone who sits around and plays video games have lower grades.

Yes i do believe learning to play an instrument at an early age will help your development throughout your life including: learning a new language, being social, and not being afraid to try new things. I know a nine year old boy who is very small, but his parents have raised him to always be challenged, and he thrives under the pressure. Probably because he is so young he does not feel as if there is pressure to learn. He seems to take everything in, and even recently learned how to play the electric guitar. Let me tell you this little nine year old is better than most adults I have seen, and has only been playing for a few months.

Its does seem like kids who play instruments are usually smarter and usually go on to make good grades and go to college. Their are so many things to know when you play an instrument, it makes you think a lot more. Learning notes isn't easy business either, so the people who do read notes and play instruments seem to have an easier time learning in general.

I personaly do not believe that playing an intrument makes you smarter, i believe if you love it i gives you motivation to continue doing well in school. the better you can do in school the more you can probably play intruments. I also feel like playing music takes more of an intelectual and self motivated person because it requiers you to read notes and learn about the intrument you play, unlike sports that if mostly based on the physical ability. Playing intruments sharpens you in a intelectual way it keep you on the top of your ablities, like training keeps and athlete in top shape. So it makes it seem like the poeple who play instruments are smarter because of it. Also we have to add the big american sterotype of nerds playing in the band and meat heads playing sports, when people grow up listening to that and watching movies and tv shows the put that stereotype in persond head the whole time they are growing up, ofcourse they are going to think that way.

I don't believe a child would be smarter just because they started playing an instrument when s/he was young. I child is going to grow into a person most likely similar to what his/her parents are, because that the kind of environment they grew up in. I do believe children should be encouraged by their parents to try new things and don't be afraid to take new steps in their life. Not to be distracted by what others what you to do, or say is right. Stand up for yourself and make your own decisions and you will be just the person you wanted to be and however smart you have let yourself become.

Its very possible that playing an instrument can make you smarter. I never played an instrument but i did notice that my friends who did excelled higher in the class.

I think music can make you smarter. It teaches you phrases and things you may not have know about before such as farming or sex, or drinking. But does playing an instrument man you smarter? I don't think so I have had many friends of mine that were in the band and they are funny but they are some of the dumbest people I know honestly I am sorry to say it but luckly they are my friends.

I believe that a student needs to be more mentally fit than others in order to play an instrument. I use to play the flute and let me tell you it wasn't easy but I don't think it made me any smarter than a regular student.

Statistically speaking this true, but it is the ones who truely study music and play instruments that I think this statement applies to.
There is something in written music that applies to math like the beats of songs. Are the songs played in a four beat rhythem or an eight beat rythem. This somehow applies to math. I don't know how but my kids are wizzards at math and they both play guitar.
I couldn't get the website to come upp so I am just speaking from experience that I have had from my children.
If you look at people who play professionally in a large orchestras, I would bet that they would score higher on a test than say a lawyer. Just a guess but the seem to be smarter all around because of the general studies that they would have to take to graduate whereas other studies are more specific related to that degree.

I do not believe that music makes you smarter but I do believe that it broadens your purspective on work that you may do in the class room or outside of school. Some people could be really good at playing an instrument but they cant een spell their name backwards. Everyone is different and unique in there own ways.

i dont think that a child who plays an instrument is any smarter than the next child who doesnt play an instrument i believe that the child will do its best at whatever if it has some kind of support behind it.
