Driving while distracted. (DWD)

With cell phones becoming more and more popular, driving is becoming more and more dangrous. 25% of all car accidents are caused by talking on the cell phone. A cell phone can be more dangrous than drunk driving. 4 out of every 5 accidents (80%) are attributed to distracted drivers. In contrast, drunk drivers account for roughly 1 out of 3 (33%) of all accidents nationally. Texting while driving is about 6 times more likely to result in an accident than driving while intoxicated.

Teens and cell phones.

Despite the risks, the majority of teen drivers ignore cell phone driving restrictions. Talking on a cell phone while driving can make a young driver's reaction time as slow as that of a 70-year-old. 56% of teenagers admit to talking on their cell phones behind the wheel, while 13% admit to texting while driving. Each year, 21% of fatal car crashes involving teenagers between the ages of 16 and 19 were the result of cell phone usage. This result has been expected to grow as much as 4% every year.

Do you use cell phones while you are driving?

Do you think cell phones cause a risk in a car?

yes I use my phone will driving. I have been driving for eight years and have not been in an accident while using my phone. Saying this does not by any mean condone what I am doing. I just wanted to point out that you can know what is right and what is wrong but as long as you get away with it what's the point in changing. I believe that this is many people's view even if they don't realize it, they just keep doing it because there are no consequences. So in my opinion it should be illegal to use your cell phone while driving.

I use my cell phone a lot while driving, even though I know the statistics of accidents caused by driving and texting. I think that I do it because I don't think that something like getting into a serious accident will ever happen to me and that is not the way I should think. I completely agree with the no texting while your driving law, and I really need to stop doing it myself. These are to really great questions and I can relate very easily with them. I have had friends who have gotten into accidents, thankfully small ones, just from driving and texting.

I do use my cellphone while driving. However, there are times I put it down and pay close attention to what I am doing. I do not use it in a school zone, construction zone, or when I am in a bigger town that has a lot more traffic. I do believe there is a right and wrong time to use your cellphone when you are driving, but also if you are able to drive and have a cellphone you should be know your limits of being of your phone while driving. I understand that talking on your phone is still a distraction, but texting is much bigger distraction, because you are typing, reading, and correcting what your are telling the other person. I believe using your cellphone while driving should not be illegal, but if you caused the accident, or damage or whatever the circumstance maybe the punishment may be being for a cellphone being involved.

it is all about commun sense, engineers have had tons of sleepless nights developing hands free and voice activated divices, to make it safer for people to be on a phone while driving, people are just cheap and dont want to purchase the equipment, and if you do not have the money to afort it which is very unlikely because if you have a phone you got he money to affort the equipment, or just dont talk on the phone while your driving. like people ask what do you do to not get pregnant? do not have sex. how do you not have a car accident while on the phone? do not talk on the phone while you are driving, and if you still get in an accident you are just a bad driver.

yes and no. Yes because I use it for music(I have an iphone) and no because I don't text or talk to people on the phone while driving. I'm very cautious while driving and I'm even paranoid at times so I don't use my phone.

Anything can cause an accident. Just turning your head for a split second can cause you to get into an accident. I think that only people who have been driving for 35 years or longer and are experienced drivers should be able to use their phone while driving as long as they pay attention to the road but I don't think that people who have only been driving for 4 or 5 years should be using a phone while driving.

I'm guilty as most when it comes to using my cell while driving. I know I shouldn't, but I do. In my opinion texting/cell phone usage isn't to much different than many other thing we do while driving for instance: putting on make up, lighting a cigarette, looking for something in your car, eating while driving, using navigation, having an infant in the car, screaming kids these are all dangerous distractions.

Like everything else, the law will eventually put this to a stop, using cell phones while driving. I think teenagers should get harsher punishments. They do need to learn how to drive well before anything else, for everyone's safety.

As you know from criminal justice, yes I do use my phone when I drive. I know it isn't the best or smartest thing to do but for some reason I can't put it away. It is a big risk that I am taking because I know that when I do text and drive i tend to swerve. I nedd to know when to put the phone down.

Cell phones in cars are a risk, but they can save you to. If you get in a wreck you can call 911. Yet if you were texting you and its out adn you get in a crash then you probably have no clue where its at. But I will honestly say I use to text and drive. But I don't any more I have my reseason why I don't and if it wasn't for those reasons I would honestly probably still text and drive. Texting and driving is extremel dangerous and stupid. SO DON'T DO IT.

This is a great subject to talk about. Everyone does it that has a cell hone. Rarely illegaldo you see people pull over on the road to use it. If everyone did that we would have serious traffic issues.

I agree with Jessica, that cell phone use while driving should be illegal. If we punish people enough it will slow down the use of cells while driving. It is just as dangerous or more dangerous as drinking and driving. I would much rather drive while buzzed than to text while driving. This is not the correct thing to say but it is true.

I have seen my neice loose her license for driving like aan idiot. She never admitted that her three accidents in less than half a year were due to texting at the wheel but we all know how she drives. She is now taking the bus everywhere and we are all safer for it.

I hate to hear my daughter call me when I know she is driving or I am driving and the same goes for my son. They all believe that they can continue to do this. I can only hope and prey they don't text and drive at the same time.

I think that is going to be a much bigger problem that it is already expected to be and the only yway to stop it is to take away the right to the road. We all have a right and responsibility to be safe on the road.

People need to slow down and realize that the important thing is not the phone that they have but the life they have ahead of this. This can be stopped in a tragic heartbeat if this doesn't stop.

only for people who abuse the use of the cell phone know what i mean. my sinsai ben says you cant ignore the importancce of usage of a cell phone in a car such as calling the ambulance for help or checking on the safety of the family. As for the people who drive the car they should not be texting.

I do believe that cell phones are a big distraction while driving and no I do not use my cell phone while I am driving because it is against the law and I am scared that I may cause an accident so to be on the safe side I just do not do it. I also believe that cell phones do cause a risk in a car alot of people say that they can multitask but why is it that most car accidents are caused by people being on the phone, somethings just not right with that picture.
