GOVERNMENT PROGRAMS

It seems people everywhere are jumping on the band wagon, whether they need it or not. A lot of pressure is being put on different city budgets across the state. Government programs are supposed to be a hand up, not a way of life. Do you think these programs are a burden to society? How do you feel about people cheating the system? Why is it some people needing help are refused? What do you think about a woman having a baby every two years and is on the program so she doesn't have to work to support herself or her children?

Thanks for your response, Jesse

I think government programs can be of great assistance to those in need. However, it does seem like the government picks favorites if you will. The government should be willing to help all people in need with out them having to jump thru hoops to get the NEEDED help.
As for people cheating the system, I think that is totally wrong. THey are the people who make it extremely difficult for the ones who may need a little extra help. It is not fair, and I believe a system that would equally help out anyone who qualifies is in need.

I don't think these programs are a burden on society. I think that the people that cheat the system, are the burden on society. There are way too many people colecting benifits that shouldn't be. I personaly know two that are cheating the system, and brag about it. They are both quite capable of working, but have managed to get doctors to say the right things on paper to get benifits. I feel that a person that truly needs help, should be helped. It's sad when a person that does needs help is turned away, and other people that don't realy need it are helped, even though they are capable of helping them selves. It's to bad there isn't a better way to trace the pattern of a woman having a child every two years. I'm shur that employees that handle this type of stuff are under staffed, and probaly have to let alot slide through the system. She needs to get a job and help her self.

I don't think government programs are a burden to society, because some people really need the help. Every situation is different, and there probably isn't enough people working for these programs to keep track of each one. It's sad that people will take advantage of this fact, but the truth is that most people only think about themselves, not how they are affecting others. A woman having a baby every two years just so she doesn't have to work is just sick. How can someone be so lazy that they bring another life into the world that they can hardly care for--and probably don't even want--just to get money from the government? Sadly, there isn't much that can be done without more funding for the programs and more employees to keep track of individual situations.

I don't think goverment programs are a burden. Others who don't absolutely need it, THEY make it a burden to society. People that cheat the system are the ones who don't need any help at all. They make it difficult for struggling people to make it through each day. The woman with the baby, who is on a program and doen't have to support herself or her children is wrong for entering the program. She has a child every two years. Which sounds to me like she is only doing it to get support. That in itself if so wrong. If she decides she wants a baby, she should get out there and get a job and support herself and her children like the rest of society.

There are people who are drunks, low life people who don't want to try and get their full education and actually take responsibility for their actions. And then there are people who have been the taken advantage of and now they are barely getting by. I think there should be background checks on the people wanting to join these govenment programs. So then evidence proves that these people really do need a little push to get by. If those others that really don't need it want to make a big fuss about how they can't get money for their alcohol, then too bad. Everybody is looking out for numero uno, and it disgusts me.

I think that the government programs are a necessary burden to our society. What kind of people are we if we don't try to take care of the poorest in our country? We could ask that now with the Katrina victims still waiting for help. The people that scam the system cost everyone, mostly themselves. I think it is good that welfare reform shortened the time someone can stay on welfare. The system wasn't meant to be a way of life, just a helping hand to get started. I wish people could still recieve some welfare while they work a minumum wage job. How are you suppose to live on that?! If welfare alone pays as much as the job there isn't much incentive. Maybe there could be a "step two" kind of thing where a stipend is paid while the person works a low pay job. Right now we only give checks if you are at home.

Helping the need should be a big priority for the government. However, i think that the people who cheat the system are the ones who are burden to society. And as far as the mother who is having a baby every two years so she doen't have to work is so stupid, people like that are the reason the government spends so much money. If this person was not so lazy this child could have a real life and not have a mother who is so worried about getting govrnment money.

I think that government aid is very important to our society. Disability and social security checks help many who cannot work. Though it is unfortunate that people cheat the system and abuse the programs, I think it is unavoidable. People always look for the easy way out. I think that when comparing paying for some people who don't need the aid versus eliminating the programs, you have to ask yourself which is worse: forcing handicaps, elderly, and poor people into poverty, or dealing with a much smaller number of freeloaders. Though it's not fair that people take advantage of the system, I think it is a small price to pay. College students taking advantage of Link cards for groceries even though their parents send them a monthly check is selfish, but what about an elderly widow who is supporting herself off of the card and social security checks? Would it be fair to take that from her?

The fault with goverment aid does not lye with the programs, but with the people who see them as their personal piggy bank. When many of these systems were put in place I can imagine that the goverment banked on the great sense of honesty that many people don't have to keep from paying out free-loaders.
The only real solution is to change the systems in place, because people who get a free ride from the goverment sure as hell aren't going to change. I do not know what that change needs to be, but I know it needs to be soon, because people who genuinly need help are having to jump through hoops just to prove they are in serious need.

I think goverment programs are great for people who need them. I can't stand the people who take advantage of the help they are given. They are collecting the benefits when they don't even need them. I don't think that a woman who keeps having more and more children should be allowed to keep having more when she can't even support the ones she already has. There should be a limit.

WOW thank you I was hoping someone would talk about this. I'm going to call it state help! for those who need state help, get it thats why its here. But to those that dont, you should be ashamed of yourself. What bothers me is that I went to Central High School and i watched so many young girls get pregnant during my freshman year and over half of them had two babies before we graduated. This is the saddest thing to me because its not that they "accidentally" get pregnant which is what i thought at first because I was ignorant to the system. These fools were getting pregnant on purpose. The first time may have been an accident but they become excited upon learning that they can now recieve a free medical card for them and the baby if they didnt already have health insurance. They can also get food stamps. yippeee! I get food and free healthcare I never have to work! lol i dont understand it! It is the saddest thing to me because as a working girl whose trying to make something of myself I only make a dollar over minimum wage but yet I'm paying for kids to keep having kids. What is society doing? NOTHING! I just wish the "state programs" could differ between those who really need it as opposed to those that dont want anything more out of life. To my understanding, state help isn't for you to be on the rest of your life, its for a person who needs it at one time or another to get on their feet. Some programs are cathching on though,to recieve food stamps here in Champaign you have to have a child, be 65 or older, blind or disabled. It used to be that anyone could recieve them.

I think govenment programs are not burdens to society because everyone needs a little help sometimes. People cheating the system should be prosecuted because the benefits they're recieving should go to someone who truly needs the assistance. Nobody said the government programs were perfect so alot of needy people who could benefit from assistance do get turned away because maybe they make a few dollars too much according to the poverty levels. Well, a woman who keeps having babies just to stay on assistance should be told by the government agencies that they're cutting them off and the woman should be looking for work so she is able to support her own babies.
