Teen pregnancy--is it a problem in the U.S. ?

Each year approximately 750,000 women between the ages of 15 and 19 become pregnant. In several states, more than half of these pregnancies end in abortion. The United States has the highest rate of teenage pregnancies when compared to other countries of similar status. Teenagers who have babies are less likely to finish high school. Given these statistics, do you think teenage pregnancy is a serious problem in the United States? Please explain your views.

Thank you!

I think teen pregnancy is a major issue in the United States. The reason why, is because majority of teenage women who get pregnant end up getting an abortion. I think why young women give for having an abortion because of their understanding of the responsibilities of parenthood and family life. As a teenager having a baby is a big responsiblity and you have to be finanially stable if you want your baby to have a good life.....

I do think teen pregnancy is a problem in the United States. I think there are a lot of girls that are irresponsible and not smart about having sex, therefore resulting in pregnancy. A lot of them think that it cannot happen to them so they are careless. One of the biggest reasons girls go straight to the option of abortion is because today's society frowns down upon teen pregnancy so much that they do not want to be looked at as an outcast. They need to realize that there are other options to choose from...abortion is not the only answer.

I think that it depends more on the person's maturity than their age, although most teenagers are very immature.I was 19 when I got pregnant and I am now 20. I did not ave an abortion, I am currently going to college, and I did graduate from high school, obviously. I do see that a lot of teen pregnancies are happening in the US, but most of the teen mom's I talk to are all having there babies and stepping up to the plate to take on their responsibilities. Most of them don't go to college, but nowadays there are many programs and support systems to help these young mothers finish high school. I've even seen some teenagers who do better as moms than adults do.

I do think that teen pregnancy is becoming a problem in the United States but I think that it can easily be fixed. There are so many forms of birth control out there. I know people say that they can't afford it but thats no excuse. There are so many free clinics out there. Planned Parenthood offers care and its based off your income. They also have baskets of free condoms for people to take. I think its wrong for them to end it with abortion but I see where they are coming from.

Yeah I think teenage pregnancy is a big issue. It has been for a while, but I think it is getting a lot worse. My sister got pregnant when she was 13 and ended up dropping out of school. The fact that she dropped out of school messed up her life. She has an eighth grade education, cant hold down a job, and finally had to give her kids up because she wasnt able to support them. Parents are also to blame for this, if the parents were more involved in their childs life this might not be as big of an issue. I know that is what happened with my sister.

If you’re data is right, then I do think teenage pregnancies is a problem. I’m interested in finding out how many of those kids don’t finish high school. When kids don’t finish high school they’re setting their selves up for failure later in life. If they don’t start selling stuff on the, “black market,” then they are destine to not making much money. This could help cause their children not to be raised with good road models. I’m very pro-abortion in a situation where the parents can’t support their kids. If they have an abortion, then a 15 year old can get an education of at least high school and maybe higher. This benefices all tax payers, because thoughts kids are more likely to become productive members of society.

I think teen pregnancy is a problem in the United States. I believe this is so because teeagers that are deciding to have sex and aren't thinking about all of the possible outcomes after it's over. I believe that some teens are just plain irresponsible and some may just be unaware of how serious pregnancy is and that taking care of a baby is one of the many difficult jobs in life. Once a teen has found out that she is pregnant, then she either takes care of the baby, have the parents raise the baby, or have an abortion. Wich ever one the teen decides to go with, she needs to remember that there are always consequences at the end of each action.

I don't exactly think it's a huge problem in the United States. I think that people need to be more responsible and use birth controll and condoms if they are going to have sex without the intentions of having a child. I don't think people realize what they are really doing when they have sex. What they are doing is trying to reproduce. Well if you want to have sex that bad but without the reproducing part just realize you need protection, or go to planned parenthood and get on the pill or something. It's all about responsibility. If you're not responsible enough to realize while having sex you could make a baby then maybe you shouldn't be having sex.

I beleive that teen pregnancy is a problem in the U.S. Since we are considered one of the most wealthy and powerful nations in the world having unexpected pregnancies is a problem that seems like we could control better. With all the advancements in birth control I think it is inexcuasable for so many people to have unsafe sex. When your young you want to have sex, but you need to plan ahead somewhat and go get condoms and birth control pills. The guy should always have a condom and the girl should always be prepared with a birth control pill or morning after pill. This would cut down on the number of teen pregancies greatly becuase I feel that most teens do not want babies at years ranging from 15-19. And with the whole abortion thing I believe it is the persons decision if they want to get an abortion and it should not be such a shameful process. Yes you made a mistake by getting preagnant when you did not want to, but don't destroy your future by thinking you can not get an abortion.

I actually do think that teenage pregnancy is becoming a problem. I come from a small town and had about 60 people in my graduating class. 5 of those students were or became pregnant by their graduation and that isn't even counting all the other classes. No teenager is close to being responsible enough to be able to take care of a child. They won't even have a good education from dropping out of school to take care of them for support. Alot of them fear of having no education, future, or childhood so they decide to get an abortion. This isn't right. It's becoming a serious problem. Alot of things need to be done to stop this. They need to offer classes over situations like this or even counceling. Offer to help them or give them help if they are wanting to become sexually active to prevent pregnancy from occuring.

Yes, it's a problem. I believe it's really the parents fault to some degree by not talking to their teenage children about the possible consequences of having sex at a young age. The teenagers themselves are mostly to blame by having sex without thinking. In this day, with so many different types of birth control, there shouldn't be this big of a problem with teenagers having children. If they are going to have sex, they should carry a condom in case they have a stupid attack at a party. Before having sex teenagers need to look around, there a plenty of examples around showing that teenagers that have children basicly ruin their lives. Abortion isn't the answer, birth control is a much better way to handle this problem.

I think if the teens think its ok to have sex, they should be able to handle a baby. If they think they are grown up to have sex, they should deal with the consequences. It is a serious problem. A lot of it is men forcing them saying "you don't love me if you don't want to have sex with me" You know what I would say to that? Get out of my life. That means that they don't love you enough. And when they do have sex, get you pregnant, they get scared and run off. That is typical. You have to be responsible to say no. The parents now-a-days do not force the idea of waiting until you get married. I know my parents always told me if I got myself in one of those situations, I was on my own. The proved that with my sister. They don't help her out that much. With the drop out situation, it was their choice to have sex, get pregnant, and not being careful. No one told them to go have sex.

i dont think it is a serious problem in the united states but it is a problem. i know that at my high school there were about 10 girls that got pregnant during the 4 years i was there, and my high school only had 700 students, so i guess that is a good number. i dont think its a serious problem because there are the people out there that know that there are other options rather than abortion or they want to keep the child themselves. i think that if a teen gets pregnant and puts the child up for adoption or keeps it that isnt a problem because they are being responsible about it, but those who get abortions are the ones that are the problem. i dont feel one way or the other about abortions but if someone is being irresponsible then im not for abortions and sometimes i feel that happens alot with teens.

It can be a problem and a blessing in disguise because new life is a beautiful thing but in most cases teen pregnancy happens in the inner city and areas of poverty so when these girls are getting pregnant they drop out of school and they already are struggling with money and they have to struggle more now that they have a child. I think they should advertise condoms as much as they advertise food and liquor.

I think teen pregnancy is a very big issue. I don't think teens know how big of a deal and how much money having a child is and I believe that when they have that child they find out very quickly and don't know how to deal with it. I think most of the problem is school do not teach how to protect yourself from pregnancy and teach more on abstinence. I believe it is wrong to bring a child into the world where you are not able to care for it or support it financially. But mistakes do happen...

I do not think teenage pregnancy is a serious problem. I know it happens all over the world many times a day, but it is a new life coming in the world. Teenagers who don't finish school is there fault. Just because you have a child doesn't mean you cant finish school. You can still do anything you put your mind to. I know a few girls that I went to highschool with that got pregnant and had their babies before senior year. They finished highschool, one on high honor roll, and continued to go to college. They both work and live on their own. If they can make it work everyone else can. I can't imagine anyone who can go through abortion. You would think that would be in your mind the rest of their lives.

Yes I deeply believe that teen pregnancy is a major problem that is going on in the United States. Many young females are losing their lives and opportunities in life over this. This problem really can't be stopped at all, all we can do is to tell our children to be careful and run them by the consequences of it. That's why when teen pregnancy happens they get an abortion which is the worse thing possible to do because they finally realize the consequences that are going to happen even though they have been told many things before about it. I couldn't understand that in some cases they used protection but it failed for some reason and they can't resist it because their teens but they don't even think about the consequences that could happen.

Having a child at any age can be hard. No matter how much you prepare for a baby there are things that slip past your attention. When it comes to teen pregnancy, most likly the child wasn't intended. Now you have (hopefully) two kids trying to raise a kid. Trying to find away to support a child, go to school, and work to support the new famly. This will be very stressful. Something most people of age have a hard time to maintain. with the young parents gone trying to make life stable, the child will grow up with limited time to learn from it's parents. Unless we get a handle, this will become a problem that will be harder to turn around.

Yes, I think teen pregnancies are a HUGE problem in the U.S. I feel like teens are not being smart! There are so many ways to prevent pregnancies; the number one way is abstinence! But if you cannot do that there are these alternatives: birth control, male and female condoms, Diaphragm, Cervical Cap, and many more. I also feel if a teen is to get pregnant (with her consent) she should not just go run off and get an abortion, because abortion should not be used as a form of birth control! I do feel like schools and parents can help this problem, schools can help by having more sex ed classes, and parents can help by talking to their kids more.

I think it is a problem but mabey not a serious problem. Most of the teens that have babies i think happend by accident or they were unexpected. If you want to have a baby at a younger age and have your life straightend out then go for it, but in most inccedents this is probably not the case. My parents had me when my mom was only 19 and the managed to give me a good life and earn a good living. so i dont see anything being wrong with it if you are ready to be commited.

I think that teenage pregnancy is a very serious problem in the United States. A teenage pregnancy can have so many effects on a person and their family. When a teenager gets pregnant they are done with high school and typically have to put of thoughts of attending college for a while. Another problem is that at such a young age, young women are not ready to take care of a child. Teenagers aren't always mature and can make many wrong decisions, but I think that this would be the worst because it affects the life of the teenager, the parents, and the child that is coming. Something has to be done immediately to prevent more teenage pregnancies or the percentages will continue to grow.

Yes- there is no doubt about it, that teen pregnancies are definitely a problem today, ad it is increasingly becoming more acceptable in our society. Teen pregnancies bring problems with the maturity level of the mother, commitment issues with the parents, not to mention the great deal of debt that could arise. It is also very hard to finish school because of the new huge commitment you have.

I wouldnt say it's a problem in the U.S. but a lot of girls are starting to have sex at an early age. Probably unprotected as well but if a girl really doesn't want to have the baby she can have an abortion. I would say it was worse in the old days because therr wasn't that kind of technology and no condoms.

yes it is a big issue now-a-days in this country, girls and guys are both irresponcible when it comes to this, and it would be hard having a baby fresh out of highschool or even still in. this is most of the reason for abortions and kids not even attempting college.
