Matt's question on whether or not college athletes should be paid

This has been a very controversial issue among the NCAA for the past few years. Should college athletes be paid? College football and basketball players bring in millions to their universities; should they see a share of that money? We are not talking about giving them millions of dollars like the pros, but what about $200 a week? Or are they already getting enough by getting a free education and free housing at the university? I would appreciate any feedback you have on this topic.

Thanks for your comments-- Matt (11:00)

I believe student athletes should not be paid by colleges because, in my opinion, it would ruin the game of college sports. The reason I'm more apt to watch a college game is because the athletes are playing more for the love of the game than for money. Pride for their school is at stake each time they play a game, and you can see that in the speed of the game. Also if money was involved with college athletes the competition between schools wouldn't exist. Schools with more money could just sign all of the nations top players in the nation. Student athletes are also given scholorships towards these schools which is enough money for them anyways. These students should take pride in the fact that they are bringing more money to their school to make it the best it can be, rather than worring about getting payed to play for them.

There was a point in time when I thought college athletes should get paid. Like you said they bring in tons of money for their schools, as well as publicity. They deserve part of the cut. But after thinking about it, they already get more than enough of the cut. They get full-ride scholarships (or at least some scholarships) helping reduce their cost or leave them with no cost at all to attend college. They have very little living expenses because the college pays for it. They are offered private tutors. They are excused from class for sport events. They are treated like legends on campus. So I would have to say they don't need any money. They are essentially already getting paid in more than one way for the hard work they put into their teams. And lastly, I have to agree with Pat - these athletes should play for pride, not money.

I dont believe that athletes should be paid. They are already getting free education and housing. A line needs to be drawn between amateurism and professionalism, and the line stops at direct payment from universities.

I never really thought about it , but maybe a good solution would be for the student athlete to receive a discounted rent or a few meals a week for free or free transportation to and from classes. I, being a student athlete in high school, know that it takes alot of work and time to play a sport while also keeping up your grades so it would be nice to receive a small token of gratitude for all their hard work. I don't really agree with being paid money directly to the student because it will only lead to more controversy as to certain players that work harder than others might feel they deserve more. A simple dedution in rent would be sufficient in showing that all their hard work is appreciated and maybe if their grades drop than the student doesn't get the deduction.Amy Soneson

One of the tough questions involved in this issue is, If you start paying athletes, which ones do you pay? Do ALL athletes get paid, including fencers and lacrosse players, or only the athletes in high-revenue sports? How about team managers, student trainers, team helpers? Do we also pay them? Should walk-ons get paid as much (or more?) as scholarship players? It would seem unfair to pay some and not all, but could universities afford to pay every athlete? There are so many tricky questions, and maybe it's too much of a hassle to open this can of worms.

Maybe athletes should be paid on an "as-needed" basis, in the same way that some students get need-based grants, and others don't. I would think that no one should be paid more than $1000 or so a month.

Personally, I'm against paying cash money to student athletes or to any other students on the basis of possessing gifts that others lack merely through luck. If we were going to pay athletes, I'd like it done through grants that they earn via some sort of effort, be it writing a paper, helping in the community, or doing a service for the college.

I don't think that they should be paid because of what they already get for free. College athletes and pros are different and there should be a line drawn. Getting paid $200 is almost enough to pay for an apartment and that they could waste on something not important.

in my opinion the idea of college athletes getting paid is absolutley ridiculous. college athletes recieve so many free handouts already. many of them get to go to college for free
which adds up on average to 60,000 over four years. second, many colleges reduce their admissions expectations for good athletes making it much easier for them to go to good schools. then on top of all of these things many of these athletes go on to make millions of dollars doing nothing but playing games. i enjoy many sports but the salaries of these people is out of control. our eighteen year old brothers and sisters are out getting killed and maimed in Iraq and Afghanistan for twenty thousand dollars a year, but apparently being an athlete is more important.

I must admit that sports does not interest me in the least though I know that is probably the most favorite past time for most people. If paying our college athletes a salary as well as the scholarship they receives, and everything else, brings the cost of tuition up, than diffently no. The cost to get a college education is sky rocketing and colleges, universities don't need another excuse to raise tuition. Linda Francis

No they should not be paid. They are paid enough by scholarships and grants. They are at college to learn not make money. Because someone is good at somthing does not mean they need money for it. If athelets get paid in college so should the people that are great chemist or grat at math.

I believe that college athletes should not be paid. One of the reasons why i like college sports is because the athletes are playing the game with a lot of passion and take pride in the game and work a lot harder. So many college athletes are already given full or half scholarships and are given many other things that any student would love to have. The tough part is who gets paid more than other and how much? Do all of them get paid the equal amount, no matter there accomplishments on the playing fields or by how they do in academics. There is no way to distinguish who gets what or a few good reasons why they should get it.

I don't think college students should get paid. The players are at shool to actually learn and finish their degree. Although some college athletes end up in the majors, they are initially at college to learn. Sports in college is meant to be recreation; a way for the students to let off steam. Some students eventuaally take it more serious and shoot for the majors. The athletes need to realize that it is a privelege for them to even play on the team. They are able to heighten their skills and learn to be better players. As for the money they make for the university, the university would still get the money without them. The university thrives on alumni to donate money to their athletic department. This is evident at the U of I, if they have a losing season the money still pours in. The college athletes should admire the knowledge they are gaining from their years at college.

I dont think that college athletes should get paid. Tuition or scholarships are fine but not money for good play. If you start paying college ball players they are going to start putting all of their focus on the game instead of their studies and then what? Dont pay them. Let them continue to play for the love of the game. There is meaning to it that way.
