Animal Testing

Some people think that animal testing is cruel and inhumane. Is it morally wrong to use animals in research for our own benefit? Hundreds of animals die every day for scientific research. It has been found that only 5-25% of the side effects caused by medicines are accurately predicted. This leads me to wonder what is actually being gained by animal experimentation? Every day a human being will talk about his or her rights. If a person feels their rights have been taken away from them they will fight back. Therefore is it not hypocritical for humans--who are generally obsessed with their own rights--to torment and kill innocent and defenseless animals? Why shouldn't animals recieve the same rights as humans? Do you think that animal testing should be put to an end? Is it really worth all the pain these animal have to go through? Whats more important, money or life?

Thanks for your comments!

I think animal testing should be considered wrong. Hurting and killing a human being is against the law and consequences of doing that are harsh. Humans are living, breathing things just like animals are. Animals have feelings just like us but are not able to really fight back against someone who is meant to cause them harm. No human would want to be a test guinea pig so why should any animals. If the product you are testing could cause harm to animals or humans maybe it should not be approved.

I think that animal testing is not right. Animal testing does not achmoplish any real useful information. Animals and humans are completely different and do not have the same reactions as one another. The only gain that I see by animal testing is to see wheather or not the animal dies. To prevent humans from being dead. This is still wrong. Animals should not be used like this for science. I believe that animal testing should be stopped. We would not test drugs on ourselves, why should we test them on our pets. Life is more important than money, but with out animal testing there would be no way for some life saving drugs to come on the market. Sure most of the animal testing is done for beauty supplies, but some is done for life saving durgs. If we stop animal testing then we might stop the cure for cancer for coming up. I think that there is a better way to test drugs than animals.

I think that testing on animals is very wrong and not needed.L personal am a huge animal lover and to think of those poor anmials being tested on simple because they can't say no is wrong and should be stoped. And if it has been found that only 5-25%of side effects are found then what is the point. And how do we know that cats and dogs don't have feeling.I do think that testing on animal is very wrong and we should find some other way to test are drugs by some other way than huring poor animals.

In high school i did a report on animal cruelty, i almost could not finish the research on my report because the details were way too graphic. Too many people look the other way and do not think that this is actually taking place. When animals are used to make a fur coat or ant other kind of fashion item, they are completely and utterly tortured and are inn unfathomable amounts of pain and suffering. the same occurs when animals are being tested on. They are not shown any kind of decency. People do not treat them as if they have any feeling at all. Animal testing is wrong, Period!!!!!

I believe this question is a very difficult one to answer. I strongly believe that animals should have the same rights as humans. I believe we as "humans" should be the voice for animals because as we know animals can't defend themselves. In the other hand I'm sure if we used real human beings as the test dummies that there will be a totally different drum everyone will be marching to. I believe a majority of the public will call it "human torture". They will say that humans can actually lived their lives normal. They will argue that they can or may have families to consider. They may even call human testing murder!!! I believe animals are the best thing to use for testing because what else can labs use to do testing on. I know it's sad for these animals and I hope that one day they can find an other way.

Animals are in no way equal to humans. To say that animal testing doesn't accomplish any useful information is ignorant. Would u rather some rat get cancer to find out what causes it, or would u rather get cancer. They help determine side effects and problems with medicine which insure your health.

It is easy for people to say that testing on animals is wrong, but the thing is there are people standing in line to test these products. These company's have been testing products on animals for many years, so i say if it has not hurt anybody yet then why change it now. Someone has to test these products because you just cant throw it out there and have people die because of some problem. So for people that say animal testing is wrong why dont you volunteer for the testing because someone has to do it.

This is one of those issues I know little about but still want to throw in my 2 cents. I am embarrassed and ashamed about how people treat animals, and yet I do nothing about it. I don't even find out what it is exactly I am so repulsed by. I just don't have the time, I guess. I think it's beneath humans to treat other creatures as we do just because we CAN. We should strive to be like our creator or like His son and not harm Earth's creatures. Using them for testing as we do is a disgrace. Maybe decades from now people will finally recognize that animals can be our friends and that we don't have to control them or dominate them or mistreat them but just let them walk the Earth in peace.

God told people that we have dominion over the creatures of the Earth. For Christ's sake, I can't believe we translated that to mean we can do whatever we want with them. We're supposed to take care of them! Man has dominion over his wife, and he TAKES CARE of her; man has dominion over animals, and he breeds them for mass consumption and laboratory testing. There's something seriously wrong there.

I quite agree, but on the flip side, it is also important to remember that they are different from us and that they are under our care. Therefore, if its humans or animals, humans must come first. Ethically we must keep this in mind when we make decisions

I think animal abuse is horrible. The laws should be stronger to stop people from harming helpless animals. We all have to live on this earth and belong here so we should all get along.

I don’t feel that animal abuse is defined adequately by the law. I believe that the law should be more specific. In my eyes, the law does not give an outline of the crimes and their punishments.
Last year my friend Cody adopted a dog came from a home that had 50 abused animals. The dog was blind in one eye and partially blind in the other because malnutrition. He also has a verity of diseases because of the amount of feces that the animals were living in. The person that was in position of the 50 animals was never charged with animal abuse.
I think that this crime should require jail time as well as a huge fine. I feel that the person that is convicted of animal abuse should have to pay for the medical bills for the animal. As well as that they should never be allowed to own a pet again.

I don't think animal testing should happen or be allowed to happen. I am not aware of the laws against animal testing in the US. It is like any other law or regulation that is out there, if it doesn't have top priority then not a whole lot is going to be done about it. It is very tough to catch some people in the act even if the rules were more clearly defined.

I get very angry when I hear about animal testing. No, I do not think the United States is properly handling the problem. No, I think the subject is not clearly defined and there are a lot of grey areas. We really need to change the laws regarding animal testing in America to make the laws much stricter.

I have to respectfully disagree with Mr. Horath. How does he know what God meant when He gave us dominion over the other creatures of the Earth? I know that Jesus himself was not a vegetarian, which tells me that it's okay for humans to use animals for the betterment of human life. No, we should not torture animals for no reason, but if we can improve human life by breeding, eating, and experimenting on animals, that is most likely what God intended when He gave us dominion over them. If people start crying about animal rights, what comes next? Plant rights? Rock rights? I think animal rights activists need to understand that humans have gained their status as #1 by being the strongest and smartest of all the species. That's what life on earth comes down to, survival of the fittest, and we have proved ourselves to be the most fit being for the planet.

I think the guidelines for animal testing are too loose and lenient. It has to be an extreme circumstance before people are allowed to do anything about it. Animals don't have enough advocates for them. Not enough people care. People in general would rather eat an animal than offer it love or care. If there's a heaven, people will pay in the end, I hope. Maybe for animal testers and abusers hell will an eternity of getting deoderant sprayed in their eyes.

I dont have a problem with animal testing. The way I see it is that....well I'll just ask you the question. Would you rather get a medication or something and get some very serious side effect or have an animal get it instead. I would rather have the test prove the product first. Humans are more important than animals.

God made man, he gave us aposable thumbs, and he made us dominant. This earth will benifit more with finding medicines to cure people, so I think we can afford to loose a few animals. Yes its depressing for these innocent animals to die. But then why dont we start punishing Lions, and Cheetahs and Sharks for killing and eating innocent animals. I mean there only doing it to help benifet them and their offspring. Which is why we kill animals, to benifet us and our off spring. It's not like we're killing off animals that we cant afford to loose. Testing animals is like hunting, it maintains certain animals from over populating. It's not as bad as everybody thinks it its.

I think that animal testing is definitely needed in America today. It allows products to be tested so that humans may use them. If the product is bad, the companies are able to take it out of production before it can harm Americans. There is an abundance of animals in this world, so instead of letting them be put to sleep, or killed in the wild, you might as well make something good of them and test a wide range of products to benefit Americans. Animals cannot talk and especially do not have feelings so what's the difference?

The way i see it is very simple. Animals are living creators that should not be abused and tormented for our benifit. Its wrong when peolpe abuse animals but its ok when labs can do all kinds of test on them and inject them with stuff. No human on this earth would subject to being a test subject that could kill them or ruin their life ; an animal can't speak for their selves but that doesnt make it right to do the things that are done to them.

"This earth will benifit more with finding medicines to cure people, so I think we can afford to loose a few animals"
We are losing more than "a few animals"
50-100 MILLION animals are hurt and killed in test labs in a year!
This is a horrible thing that is going on in our country, and it should be stopped.
There are laws against animal abuse, but animal testing is not considered abuse!
What is the logic there?
