Champaign-Urbana Smoking Ban

Should the smoking ban in Champaign and Urbana expand to be state wide? Why or why not?Should the ban become nation wide? What places should be exceptions to the ban and why?

Its hard to have an opinion in this matter. I love going out with my older brother and his friends to the campus bars, and when they smoke its not really a problem for me. At the same time my mom doesnt smoke, and hates to be around people that smoke. Since the ban went up she's gone out more and more to see bands play at places she wouldnt of gone to because of the smoke. She doesnt drink at all either, so just going out with her friends to social drink just isnt in the cards. Its good to see her and go out to live her life again. The only problem i have with smoking is when i'm around a lot of people that do i tend to get a headache, and in the morning i have the worst smelling clothes ever. Plus, I've herd from bar owners that their money intake has significantly dropped, and that the bar hours would extend to make up for the money loss. Then that creates a problem of dumb kids saying "lets get another round" Then more and more kids will be driving home drunker than ever. We'll have to see what the bar results will be for the summer days. It'll prolly pick up because of warmer weather. If the ban sticks for good i'm happy with it because i dont smoke, and i'd hate to get a cancer from it. I have a better chance of not breathing it in outside because of the wind. We'll just have to see what its like after this summer. If the majority of the public says "leave it on" then that sounds good to me, or if the public says "Take it down" then thats also good to me because thats what the public wants and its not really hurting me. I'm not breathing the smoke in everyday. So, having to tollerate it a day or two out of the week is fine.

i hate being around smokers when they light up in a restraunt or anywhere. i think the ban is protecting the second hand smokers and trying to urge the smoking pop. to stop. it is defintly a progresive law and i am very greatful for its aproval. Now if Smoking ban grow large i might just have to have a feild day.

I think that the restaraunts are reasonable to the smoking ban because people who take out their family's shouldn't be forced to inhale second hand smoke. I myself hate second hand smoke because it gives me headaches. The exception to the smoking ban should be bars. People go to bars, drink, and smoke cigarettes. Thats the atmosphere.

Yes, i think the smoking ban should be expanded to champaign and Urbana because of the obvious problems it causes to the people who smoke and to the innocente people around them. I think the ban should become nationwide, but that wouldn't happen for a long time. Pretty much anywhere there might be a large number of people like restaurants, and sporting events. Lung cancer has spread to a larger amount of people every years, and its not always the people who smoke that get it, but also the one's around them.

i think that the smoking ban in champaign is a good thing. Whether or not it should be spread over the entire state is another issue. I think it is best to see how well it will actaully work in champaign before we make it a statewide issue. I think that this ban is good because i dont like the smell of smoke. I will admit that i will have a occasional smoke every once in a while maybe when im drinkin or whatnot but to smoke every minte of the day gets to me. If im around people smoking for a long time i will start to get a headache and feel a little bit sick. I think this ban is good to keep innocent non smokers aways from the harmful effects of smoke and be able to go to places they normally wouldnt go and have a good time.

Before I begin with this question I would like to share my feelings about smoking in general. I am frankly disgusted with smoking all together. I grew up with a parent smoking and I will never understand why anyone would be willing to do that to themselves and the people that they care about. New age smokers are just plan morons. There have been studies all over the world telling us for years that smoking can kill you. These kids that start smoking either have absolutly no willpower or a just completely braindead. By the way, practicaly all of my best friends for since being kids are now smokers so I have the room I think to rip on them as much as I deem necessary.
Now the idea of a smoke free enviornment in in public places is a good thing. People shouldn't be forced to be exposed to something that can kill them. It unfortunaly will affect small bars and businesses that allowed for smoking in their bars.
It is unfortunatly people's right to be allowed to smoke even if it is a form of suicide. Therefore, I think that the nation and the states should give some insentive of any kind to those bars not allowing for smokers. I don't think that a full fledged law is necessary. If you don't like to inhail the smoke, go to another bar. If bars and other places get insentives for the government for not allowing for smoking, they will adopt the regulation.

I also think that the smoking ban in Champaign-Urbana should be expanded to state-wide.

I, personally, hate even walking by smokers. The smell just overwhelms my senses and it's disgusting.

Also, I think, it will help promote people to think a little healthier. With the smoking ban stopping people from smoking in most areas, they're forced to wait to smoke, which may help them quit if they want to. Granted, thinking this is a pipe dream, but it's an idea.

Another great thing is that people won't smoke around children, in public at least. We've all seen the anti-smoking commercials, where parents are smoking next to their children, and the people saying the children will start smoking at an early age.

All in all, I think expanding the smoking ban state wide, will help at least try to make people think healthier, and protect children and others from smoking.

I honestly hate the fact that you can't smoke in Restaurants or bars and etc. But in reality it is the best thing. While we were smoking it was harming anyone around us including kids. They shouldn't have to be around smoking people. In some ways I think it should be expanded state wide, but also take into consideration of places that you should be allowed to smoke. Such as Bars, rarely do children come into places like that. In other places maybe put a time limit on it for when you are aloud to smoke indoors such as at bowling alleys maybe after 9pm most places send children that are under 19 0r 21 home.

I am in between on the opinion of having a smoking ban. I believe there are good and bads of it. I myself am not a big fan of smokers or smoking in general. After while it gets to me and causes headaches and the next morning it feels like I am stuffed up. I find people will go out more because of the ban. Places might also lose business because of the ban. For example the bars could lose a lot of money from this. I nmy opinion though, if people want to go to the bars they are going to go no matter what. I don't have a problem with the ban at all. In fact it might be a good thing. I think the ban protects the people who don't smoke. If people need to smoke that bad, they can go outside. The idea of the ban nationwide would take a long time, but I don't think it is out of reach. This might keep people healthy or make people healthier.

The smoking ban was a very good idea I can't stand smokey restaurants while eating. But as for bars I think they took a good idea and ruined it, I don't really enjoy being around smoke that much but I know its a part of the bars and i have no problem with it. For some people it's important to be able to smoke while drinking and I don't think it's fair to make them stand outside in the cold in the dead of winter just to smoke a cigarette. Pat Busey

No place should be exempt from the ban. if it is so bad for you and everyone else, then why the hell is it legal. Dont half ass it and just do the state do the whole nation. honestly it shouldnt stop there but we dont have much control over that. If its harming others than it shouldnt be dont. That just sounds like a law anyway.

I don't really think there should be a complete ban state wide or even nation wide. I am not a smoker myself so it doesn't bother me one way or another, but isn't that what smoking and non smoking sections are for in resturants. As far as the bars go that is ridiculous people have always been allowed to smoke in bars. I think it is just a bunch of do good-ers trying to save the world by cutting down on places people can smoke.

I definitely feel that the smoking ban in Champaign-Urbana should expand to be statewide/nationwide. I think that when someone wants to go out to eat they shouldn't have to worry about being in a smoky restaurant and having to deal with the thick air, terrible smell, etc. Everyone has the right to go out and enjoy a nice meal without having to deal with that. I mean imagine how some people can't go out to eat because they have bad asthma and just can't be around smoke. Why should they be punished for someone else's bad habit? A smoker can sit through an hour meal without having to light up, and if that's all they have to sacrifice to be respectful to others then they should just get over the smoking ban. I understand that businesses (especially bars) are feeling the financial problems from this smoking ban, but if the state or nation decides to have the ban, then what are smokers going to do?...just not go out? Yeah, I seriously doubt that. Business will pick up again. I don't think there should be any exceptions to this ban because people have the freedom of choice - and that means they should be able to choose to go to any place for a meal without having to deal with that terrible habit.

This is a very tough subject to talk about. On one side you have people that are smokers saying that they should be allowed to smoke anywhere they want to because this is a free country. Then on the other side of things you have people that do not smoke and does not want to deal with the second hand smoke. As i see it people should be able to do what ever they want to. and if people do not want to smell the smoke then they just need to get up and leave and not worry about it. On a finacial side of things either way it is going to hurt business. If you do get a smoking band people will that smoke will not do business with you and if you do not have a smoking band then the people that do not smoke will not do business with you. The way i see it is if its not broke dont fix the problem.

Smoking is a very big problem in todays world. Alot of people smoke and thats fine, but alot of people dont smoke and thats where it conflicts. I work at a hotel here in Champaign and i get alot more people coming up to me asking for non-smoking rooms than people asking for smoking rooms. Im pretty sure that everyone who smokes knows its not good for them, but yet and still they still have the right to do so. If we ban smoking from every where we are taking away there freedom to smoke, but if we kept it then we are taking away all the non-smokers right to a clean and healty environment. The whole smoking ban is split right down the middle. I mean i dont want someone who smokes to be blowing their smoke all in my face but i do want them to have the right to smoke because its what they choose to do.

I don't like going into restraunts and sit by smokers the whole time I'm there. Then later come home smelling like smoke from your clothes. I think the ban is good, but my brother-in-law works at a bar and thinks that they might lose many customers from people who use to come. I don't think that it should be nation wide because other states have a lot of smokers and restraunts may close down. Having it state wide may start letting people see that not smoking will let them live longer and may stop.

I think that the smoking ban is a good thing in restaurants, and public places, but bars. I just never would of imagined it passing for the bars. I don't smoke, but know several people who do. I just think that the bars should be different, because now all you see is a group of people hanging outside the bars smoking (this is true for restaurants as well). I think places should have beer gardens or garden seating to allow smoking. I hate going out and smelling like smoke when you leave.

yes I do think smoking should be banned nation wide because it only does harm to people. Smoking not only endangers the person smoking but other innocent people that happen to be around them. like restaurants for example, little kids go to eat and they are being affected by it.
