MLG, and the future of competitive gaming.

The 2007 MLG (Major League Gaming) completed their first tournament of the season just recently, thus insuring the gaming community a competitive season. MLG and other competitive video gaming leagues are very popular these days due to the increase in video game publicity and new technology. But should we recognize the MLG and other video gaming leagues as main stream sports. Should MLG have the same publicity as basketball or football or is competitive video gaming just a waste of your time, you decide.

I think that gaming is not in the catogorie of sports beucase spots are pysical in nature and vedio games are not so phsical as what they are mental. Gaming has a catogorie to itself. gaming has got alot of publicity throught commercials and have been on tv like madden challenge but it would be nice to see more gaming events on tv.

I realize that in today's society there are more and more things becomming popular as sports, but video games, give me a break. There is no physical activity involved other than sitting on a couch moving your thumbs. I believe that MLG is in no way a Legitimate sport and therfor shouldn't be recognized as one.

Hell no it shouldnt be considered a sport. and it deffinetly shouldnt get the same publicity as sports. I'm not into "gaming" witch might make me think differently than those of you who are, but i just think it is dumb for a video game to be played as a sport. It shouldnt even be called the MLG

I don't think video games should ever be considered a professional sport.

Granted, I do love to play video games, mostly computer games, but a national sport? No, it just doesn't make sense. "Ooooh, I can sit at home all day and kick ass in Halo! I rock!" It just doesn't work for me as a sport.

However, that's not to say I don't think tournaments and other things for video games are a bad idea. Those type of things are for fun and prizes.

But paying money to these people like professional sports? No, I don't agree with that.

This is a very interesting question. I have actually never heard of the MLG just because I just havn't had the time like I did when I was younger to play video games. I think that there wouln't be anything wrong with allowing for this to grow into such spectator sport. I personally would much rather play the games than watch someone else do it. Gaming is a multi million dollar, so it is far form being not very popular. I think that the only way that it will get view as much as a football or baseball game is if it really draws in a crowd. If they get the publicity, good for them. If not, then I feel that it will not hurt th gaming industry to much.

I don't think that gaming is considered a sport because it does not require much physical movement. Anything that requires you to sit on your couch is not a sport. Video games have grown a lot there is even a channel on cable that is dedicated to video games and ESPN has shown footage of Madden challenges. But I could not call gaming a sport.

I have never heard of the MLG, but in no way do I think it should be considered a sport. In a sport there must be something physical going on. I admit playing video games takes talent and practice, but it should not be a sport. Maybe it could have a category of its own. It is cool to watch some of the stuff on video games, but I don't get into that kind of stuff. I just don't have time. I would rather being playing the sport than using my thumbs to do it for me. I think this just decreases the idea of kids getting involved with sports or getting exercise. I just don't see this as a good idea. Some people have the talent and it is their thing, but maybe this is taking it too far?

I don't think we should think gaming as a sport. Sports are test your phyical fitness and your skills. Some video games do require skills to play but they are not up to par with real sports like basketball, volleyball and golf. Playing video games is like driving in the Nascar races, they take skill, and alot of awareness to your surroundings, but they are not sports because they don't test you physical abilities. Gaming in fun and enjoyable but I think it should stay as entertainment and a hobby if someone competes in gaming events.

The thing that you have to think about is what is a sport considered? that is a game. Now i have heard of some pretty weird games that you can play, and now they have made it into a major league where anyone on the face of the earth can play. Some people are better at somethings than others. For these people it is playing an animated game on a tv screen rather than playing it on a field where some people would have an advantage. People are put on this earth for a reason and for these people this is their reason.

I will be honest, I knew nothing of MLG, this is new to me. I do not play video games nor do my children. I know so many people who play and are addicted. To me, this isn't a sport because it doesn't entail physical activity, just mental challenges. How healthy is it, to sit in front of the television for hours and days on end to play games? I don't like to hear someone was up all night playing video games. I know there are a lot of you out there playing them, but it isn't my cup of tea.
