Domestic violence

How do you define domestic violence? How far is too far? Would you stay with a person who abused you? Would you keep letting it happen? Would you tell someone? Why do you think so many people stay with the person who abuses them? Is domestic violence a big problem in our country? Why or why not? If you think it is a big problem, do you have any idea what can be done about it?

Have a drink . . .

Do you think the legal drinking age should be lowered? Should 18-year-olds be able to sign their life away to fight in a war but not be able to order a beer? Do you believe that freshman college students wouldn't be able to handle drinking while away from their parents? Is it fair that a teenager could be trialed as an adult but he/she is not old enough to buy a drink? What are the risks of moving the legal drinking age back to 18? What are the advantages to lowering the drinking age? The disadvantages?

MULTIPLE DIALECTS

Why are multiple dialects for one language widely accepted and respected in other countries but not in the U.S.? In the U.S., it seems as though, if you don't speak proper English you are looked down upon. Most countries have multiple dialects and they are widely used and respected. If we speak any form of slang in the U.S., people assume if you knew proper English, you would use it. While my family and I know proper English, that is not how we speak every day. I look at speaking a varied form of proper English as adding flavor.Speaking this way represents who you are, what you are comfortable with, how you affiliate and often times your experiences through cultural differences which should be embraced.
Example: "Whatchu bout to do?" or "Ima be over here." or "I'm finna go to da sto."
Is speaking a varied form of proper English really hurting anyone? If so, who is speaking in this manner really hurting? Is it desecrating or causing proper English to become obsolete?

Does Divorce Affect a Child’s Life?

Does the child need a person to talk to in a divorce? What is the impact of the child’s life after divorce? Do the parents try to control the child’s feelings on how he or she may feel about the other parent? Can a divorce be a positive outcome towards the child’s life? Does divorce affect the child at school? What kind of reactions should you expect from a child whose parents are going through a divorce? Does divorce affect the child differently depending on their age? If so, what age does it affect the child the most and why? Is it a positive or negative thing to have step parents in the child’s life? When the child is an adult will he or she think it is normal to divorce?

Can Gaming Save the World?

As students in college, those of you reading this might be or you might know someone who is interested in games. Whether it is video games, board games, or dice games you most likely know a "gamer," and you have probably played a type of game before. Games have been around for a long time and they have made people happy and helped them come together throughout the word. Personally, I like to unwind after a day at school playing a video game on my Xbox at home or at a friend's house. Today there are a wide variety of games and different ways to play them. From healthier motion controlled games to controllers that require movement, to the ever recognizable game controller where you only use your thumbs. In your opinion do you think gaming is good? Do you think it is bad? Please watch the video posted in the link and tell me your thoughts and opinions about it. Do you think that in times of crisis those gamers can, in fact, change the world?

Should college athletes be paid?

  • Do you think college athletes should be paid even though they have scholarships?
  • Do you think college athletes should get paid when they do not receive scholarships?
  • What do you think they should be paid? Money? How much?
  • Should the athletes who play more get paid more or less than the ones who sit on the bench?
  • Should different college sports pay their players different amounts? Why or why not?

Pittbulls

Pittbulls. Are they born mean or are they trained to be mean?

Do you think that the attention given to Pittbulls is fair or just motivated by fear
from the public opinion responding to violent stories of them?

Do you think that Pittbulls are any more dangerous than any other breed of dog?

Do you or someone you know have a personal experience involving Pittbulls?
Is it good or bad?

Do you think it is fair for a Pittbull to be put to sleep only because someone accuses
the dog of viciousness with no investigation, and how can this be prevented?

For those of you who have never been exposed to a Pittbull, what are your
feelings about them without the experience of having met one? Did the rumors
you have heard of them cause you to feel this way?

[Please watch the video above. Thank you.]
What are your views on gun control? Would crimes like the Trayvon Martin murder be less likely to occur if we had stricter gun control laws instead of the concealed-carry laws prevalent today?
Give your opinion--which side are you on in the Trayvon Martin case? How sympathetic are you for George Zimmerman?
In the video, what do you think of Bobby Rush's behavior on the House Floor? Should he have been kicked out as he was? At the beginning of the video how did you think things were going to pan out?

Why do young people smoke?

Why do you think so many young people are getting addicted to cigarettes?  What is the allure for them to start smoking?  Is it a pathway to get rid of anxiety?  Is it simply a way to look cool?  Do you think it is really that cool?  Is it because of peer pressure?  If so, is there any alternative for dealing with the enormous amount of peer pressure many young people feel?  Do they not understand the terrible health risks, or do they simply not care?  Why are they willing to spend the money to feed a smoking habit?

Is there a Heaven?

What do you think happens to us after we die? Do you believe there is life after death, or that this is it? What led you to these beliefs? Were your beliefs shaped by those around you or did you come to your conclusion on your own?

Should cell phone use be illegal while driving?

On Aug. 5, 2010, an accident involving two school buses, a tractor-trailer and another passenger vehicle, near Gray Summit, Mo., is blamed on a texting driver. Federal safety investigators say a 19-year-old driver was texting when his pickup collided with the other vehicles in a deadly pileup on an interstate highway in Missouri.

Why should cell phone use remain legal while driving?

Is Congress allowed to step in, and enact a nationwide ban on cell phone use while driving or should it be governed by local jurisdictions?

Do you believe text messaging should be banned completely while driving?

What type of laws would you make if it was your decision?

Are hands free devices actually safer than using a hand held cell phone?

Video games' effects on players

Several years ago studies were saying that video games were bad for you, caused violence in children, but just recently a few studies are showing that games are good for you; help you with critical thinking and learning skills. Do these studies hold any proof or are they just full of hot air? Do video games cause violence in players or are these players already violent to begin with?  Do you think video games, even violent ones, have something to offer players in terms of something they can take away from the game into the real world? And children that play these violent games have bought these games by themselves or do you think the parent is to blame, because they are not paying attention to the ESRB rating, with them having access to these mature games?

Do college athletes deserve to get paid in more than just scholarships?

Do college athletes deserve to get paid in more than just scholarships? Do you think it's right that some colleges makes millions off of their student athletes and only pay for some of their tuition? Should college athletes get paid off of their jersey or ticket sells like the pros do? What are the advantages and disadvantages you see to paying college athletes? Do you think college sports will become less intense if they get paid? Would you pay them for all sports, or just the money-making sports? How much should athletes be paid?

Media: How Do Cartoons Affect Youths?

All children love to watch cartoons on the television while growing up. But with cartoons that the youth watch today why do they all have a hidden message for the youth? Most of what I tend to notice a lot of in modern cartoon is the idea of sex, the use of drugs to take them to other states of mind, and the idea of obesity. Do you feel that cartoons should have a regulation on what they convey to the minds of our youth? Is there anything that you notice in cartoons that youth should not see?

Marijuana vs. Alcohol

There has been a large debate on the comparison of two different “drugs,” alcohol and marijuana, neither of which in a controllable manner is that bad for you. But one can be much worse than the other when being abused. Alcohol has been proven to cause more accidents and deaths than marijuana and is all around more harmful. Why is alcohol legal to people of age when marijuana is outlawed to almost everybody? Why are there people in prisons for smoking a little weed when we have crazy alcoholics roaming the streets every night?

Over-Medication of Elderly

Do you think that doctors are over-medicating the elderly? Do they do it because family or other medical professionals suggest it? Is it a way for pharmacies to earn more money? Do you think nursing homes over-medicate? Under-medicate? Is over-medicating a way to control pain or behavioral issues? Do you think some elderly are being under-medicated, due to lack of communicating or ability to express feelings? What are the effects of getting the wrong medication? Dose of medication?

Trayvon Martin's Case

As I'm sure everyone has heard of the Trayvon Martin case, I myself feel a little guilty because I've just recently started following the case yesterday. While watching Nancy Grace on TV, I saw that she asked the mother of Trayvon if she feels as if justice has been served and whether or not she (people in general) think the judicial system has failed over the years.

I just want to know some people's views of the case. Do yu think Zimmerman will get a fair trial? Do you think second degree murder is a tough sentence for him? I personally believe that he should have been charged with first degree murder with the death penalty as an option. I say this because of his background and the way people that know him have described him to be.

Digital World

845 million people are active users on Facebook as of December 2011 and over 145 million users are on Twitter today. Are we relying too much on the Internet for social contact? Are we addicted to our electronic devices? Do too many people spend too much time online or on their phones texting and tweeting every day? Is it ok that we are connected to everyone at all times? What do you think are the benefits of all the digital connections between people? Are there also drawbacks to people living in an online world?

How much time do you spend on the Internet daily? How many times will you check your phone in an hour?

Childhood obesity

Did you know that between 16 and 33 percent of children and adolescents in this country are obese?  Why is there such an epidemic of obesity in our children? How can we reduce obesity in children? What can parents do? Do you view childhood and adolescent obesity as a problem in our society? Why or why not?
