Have a drink . . .

Do you think the legal drinking age should be lowered? Should 18-year-olds be able to sign their life away to fight in a war but not be able to order a beer? Do you believe that freshman college students wouldn't be able to handle drinking while away from their parents? Is it fair that a teenager could be trialed as an adult but he/she is not old enough to buy a drink? What are the risks of moving the legal drinking age back to 18? What are the advantages to lowering the drinking age? The disadvantages?

My personal opinion is that the drinking age should stay the same. There are so many people under the age of 21 that are already drinking. And if they lowered the age, it would cause a lot of trouble. There will be more people drinking and driving and risking their lives. If people were able to drink legally at the age 18, they may be more at risk to be involved in drugs also and slowly become alcoholics.

I think that I am indifferent in the lowering of the drinking age. I am 25 so lowering it doesn’t affect me but will affect me when I have children. I don’t disagree with lowering it to 18 because they are able to fight for our country, vote, by lotto tickets and cigarettes. They are tried as an adult at the ages of 17 to 18 so why not have other rights. I think it gives them time to get out of there system while their young. They will do it anyway; whether it is legal or not kids find a way. It is risky but health risk involved will happen whether its 18 or 21. They should have programs for 17 year olds telling them risk and health related issues so they know how it will affect them, their friends, and family and let them decide if they want to drink. If they lower it they should reconsider when it is okay for them to enter college. Make sure they have matured enough to handle the pressures of college and have the partying out of their systems. People will drink if it’s legal for them or not.

18 or 21, there's really not much of a difference between these ages so I don't feel it really matters in the long run.

What I do see as being necessary is to stop the glorification of alcohol as this is what causes most of the problems out there. A child is shown how alcohol is such an adult thing to do, how much fun people have drinking and how it's advertised all over the media. But, it's denied to them and they're told, "wait until you're older". This however just makes them want it more. Finally when they are of age, they go to the nearest bar with their friends and get totally tanked up on whatever they can get their hands on. Some of these kids will wind up dying of alcohol poisoning which is tragic, but could have been avoided.

Alcohol should be made available in a safe and controlled setting when the kids are still young. Look at France, the legal drinking age there is 16 and yet the rates of alcoholism are much lower than they are in the US. A big reason for this is that wine, beer and other drinks are simply a part of life. They're not glamourised, they're simply there.

What are the risks at lowering the drinking age to 18? America tried lowering the drinking age to 19 back in the 1970's after the Supreme Court ruled the draft was unconstitutional. What happened? Drunk driving accidents soared and rose up over 1000% percent.

I think the drinking age should be reduced to 18 years old in the united states. Actually it should be controlled by the state what the drinking age is. Every other country in the world has their drinking age at 18 or don't even have a drinking age. I don't believe their would be more drinking and driving because you wouldn't have to try and hide your drinking, you could just go to a bar and drink.

I think that they should keep the legal drinking age the same. They should keep the legal drinking age the same because teens would drink without the fear or being caught so that would lead to more problems beacause consuming alcohol has health risks. If they did lower the drinking age to 18 I would not be mad because in many countries you can legally drink at 18. I do find it odd that people can go fight for their country, buy cigarettes, and buy lottery tickets when they are 18 but have to be 21 to drink. I believe part of the reason that the legal drinking age here in the United States is 21 because the logical part of the brain is not fully developed until a person reaches the age of 21.

I think i answered this last semester. In my opinion, i dont really care because i'm not a big drinker anyways. However no matter what the "legal" age is for anyone to go out and get a drink, if you're a young person and you like to drink you'll find a way to do it anyways age doesnt matter. Which leads to more teenagers getting DUI's. So if the drinking age were to be lowered then there needs to be new rules. Like in belguim, you can get into the bars at 15-16 years old, but since the drinking age is so low you cant get your lisence till you're 21 and i think thats a great idea...only if this situation were to happen. Kids can drink, but there isnt anyone getting behind the wheel.Or in louisiana kids can drink as long as they have permission from their parents so you can go over to your friends house and get drunk as long as their parents are there.....however i dont think that drinking at a young age is going to make you become an alcoholic or become a drug addict. I drank when i was younger(not bragging)which is not a good thing, but by the time i got into highschool, i rarely ever drank..it just wasnt appealing to me anymore and now. If i were to drink it would be a glass of wine, sitting on my couch, not getting wasted..and i didnt even try any kind of drug until years later, but again i didnt become an addict and im as sober as can be! So it's just a matter of opinion, but i dont really care anyways.

I don't think the drinking age should be lower unless certain things. Such as serving your country in the military. But other than that the drinking age needs to stay where it is at 21. I don't think college freshmen students could handle while away from their parents. I think college kids drink to black out and don't drink to just socialize like the mature adults do. I think it is fair because they aren't mature enough to drink like a responsible adult. I think the risk of lowering the advantages there isn't one. I think the disadvantages is the raise in DUI arrest will go up due to kids being stupid, getting drunk enough and get behind the wheel.

I think the drinking age should be lowered because you are by law, legal at the age of 17. At eighteen you have no say so in whether or not your drafted into the army. Whose to say that eighteen you are not mentally mature to be around guns, bombs, etc.? Most DUI occur from people in their mid and late twenties. I do understand the complications with age limit for drinking, hell I know people that are in their late twenties that can tolerate liquor. I don't think drinking has much to do with age but more with responsibility and tolerance.

Wow, I never thought of this issue in this way. You make some extremely valid points. I would have to say that even though I think there is a double standard, I truly believe that there would be dyer consequences for lowering the legal drinking age. I know that there would be an increase in drinking related deaths and accidents. Looking at the driving age, they have enacted new laws about how many people can be in a car with a 16 year old at a time and so on. This is for the safety of all. I think we need to maintain the age for drinking at 21. It isn't hurting anyone and probably helping save lives. Honestly, many teens are drinking before they turn 21 anyway. Still, we don't need to make it easy for them to do it.

I do think the drinking age should be lowered. I do not believe that all freshman students can handle drinking because some grown ups can't handle drinking. I do believe if a man can die in active duty he should be able to have a few drinks. I don't think it is fair that young adults can be trialed for life in prison before they are about to buy or consume alcohol. The risk of lowering the drinking age will increase teen drinking and driving , it will also increase death rates potentially: but its not like teens don't get their hands on alcohol. Lowering the drinking age might reduce crimes with minor possession and minor consumption. Disadvantages would be all the obvious things more people drinking, and probably more alcohol related crimes and accidents.

to be honest, i dont even think it matters, whether it was lowered or not. Kids today 18 and younger are drinking although they aren't allowed to. I think if it were lowered, there would be a lot more crime and accidents, but again, really doesnt matter because they are doing it anyway. I know that i experienced drinking alcohol before i was of drinking age, and it isnt something that i want my children doing until they are old enough to do so legally (if they choose). The whole being old enough to go to war, tried as an adult, yea, i think its a bit unfair, but i still dont think it would be a good idea. a lot people under the age of 21 are immature, and when it all boils down to it, thats really what it's about. responsibility and maturity. I drink every now and then, and even if i get tipsy, I know that i have to go home to my kids, so i know how to control myself. many people dont. . .

No I think if anything the legal age to drink should be higher.

At 18 you can vote, and at time of war to me 18 is too young to go out and experience things that men in their 20's - 50's are still struggling to forget. Therefore, I still believe that "18" is still too young.

I don't think it matters the age, but the maturity and frame of mind of the person that is drinking.

Unfortunately, when a person young or old gets thrown into situations, drinking should not be the answer or solution.

If you pay attention to the news, there are several reasons why the legal age to drink should not be 18, how many young drinkers had been behind the wheel and didn't make it home, not to say that adult drinkers are any better. Bottom line drinking is not the answer.

I don't see the advantage in letting teenagers drink. Alcohol is not like drinking milk, it does not make you stronger, it makes you weaker, it's a delusion in believing that drinking can make it all better, but it actually only stops you from being who you should be, which is a responsible person that have better things to do with their lives than watch it go by.

In my opinion, I think that the age for legal drinking should not be lowered. This will only affect younger people more. If we already have problems and many accidents because of drinking and driving when drinking is legal to 21 and older. Many younger people be drinking when they can’t legally and if they have the chance to do it legally then there will be more accidents because people do respect that rule and if they know they can now drink then they are going to do it. I think that 18-year olds have the right to vote but not the right to drink is fair. They can vote and make decision but they are still not responsible enough to be drinking. I still think that 18-year olds should not even have the right to vote. For me there are many 18-year olds out there that act like little kids and do not have the sufficient responsibility to make such big decisions. I think that not only will it affect lowering the drinking age to 18 to the freshmen college students away from their parents but any situation.

I think they should lower the drinking age to 19. If your old enough to get into the bars then you should be able to drink. We are in college and were going to drink anyways. Every other county has a lower drinking age and when we go there we can drink so why not lower it here. People complain about the drinking age and it gets annoying to hear about how your not 21 you shouldnt drink. I am strongly for lowering the drinking age

The drinking age should definitely stay the same. There is a reason why the drinking age is set at where it is. 21 is usually the age when the body is able to better digest alcohol. People younger than 21 will have a harder time processing the alcohol and are therefore more susceptible to alcohol poisoning. Also, people younger than 21 tend to be more immature than those older than 21. Those old enough to drink should be mature enough and responsible enough to know how much alcohol they can drink without doing irreparable damage to their body. Granted, there are always exceptions to these types of situations, but generally, those old enough to drink should be mature enough to handle it. Besides, lowering the drinking age would just give college kids more excuses to drink. If the drinking age is lowered, then they will have more access to alcohol. Those who are underage and drinking are already doing it, and if they want to suffer the consequences for their actions then that is their choice.

I think the drinking age should be lowered to 18. I feel people who are 18 are just as responsible as a 21 year old. Chelsea actually said all the points that I wanted to say about the situation. I think if you're able to vote, be charged as an adult,or go to war then you should be able to have a drink. How is it possible for a person to own a gun at 18, but they cant have a drink. By the drinking age being 21 its going to cause more under age drinking.

I don't think there is any reason for the drinking age to be lowered to 18. To me, the level of maturity it takes to sign up for the military or vote is completely unrelated to the level it takes to be a responsible drinker. In my experience, 18-year-olds can be really stupid, and are prone to making bad decisions. While 21-year-olds can also be equally stupid, they are generally more mature and able to make good decisions about drinking. Another point is that currently, if 18-year-olds want to drink, they go ahead and do it, therefore I don't see any real point in the idea.

The age should indeed be lowered. If you are allowed to serve in the armed forces at 18... You should be able to drink. If you are old enough to be tried as an adult...you should be able to drink. The system is really screwed up. I don't understand it at all. But of course the age set will not be lowered. They really should just have one age that you can do anything and that age should be 21.
