America

In the state our country is in, should you be proud to be an American? What does it mean to be proud of your country? Is it wrong to not be proud to be an American?

It is a blessing to be born an American. We live in a country where we have the right to speak what is on our minds, question our government, and vote to change it if we are unhappy. If you are feeling like you shouldn't be proud, remember back to September 11, 2001 and the way our country joined together to help their brothers and sisters in New York, Pennsylvania, and Washington D.C. The beautiful thing about America is that it is the land of the free, so people are free to leave if they are unhappy here.

Yes our country may not be in the best state. I mean we are going through a recession, we are currently in a war, and the unemployment rate is at a high but I am still proud to be an American. We have men and women fighting for us in other countries just to keep our freedom and I think that should be something everyone should be proud of. To be proud of our country means to stand up for everything that the Untied States stands for. We have to trust our government though sometimes it may be hard to do but we have to do it. Also to be proud of our country also means that if it came down to it you would do anything to protect it. I do think it is wrong to bot be proud of our country. I find that if you live here and get all the rights that you want you have to be proud of it. If the person is not proud of our country I think someone should ask them the question: Why are you here then? When they answer that question I am sure you will be able to find one reason they could be proud of being an American.

I agree with the first comment, it is a blessing to be born an American. We are having a tough time right now, but everyone has them, together we will get through it. Just takes patients and understanding. We are being tested on how well we will stick together and what we learn from this hard time. We are going though this together, as Americans, and we will learn from it as well. Everyone who lives here should be proud to call America their home.

I am very happy to be an american no matter what state the country is in. Being a proud American is to stand up for the rights of our country. No it is not wrong to not be proud. Everyone has their own beliefs.

They use to say everyone wants to live in America. Yes, it's a great place, but it's not perfect. I think you should be proud to be an American. It's your country, you should be happy you live in a country that is free, with some exceptions. To be proud to be an American means that you take pride and would stick up for your country. Also, that you wouldn't pick any other place over this one. Some people don't realize how good we have it here compared to other countries. Others from different countries see that though. That's why most of everyone is trying to come over here. You should take pride in where you come from but America is honestly just a better place for people.

I am very happy to be an American, but I'm not proud to be. I just got lucky enough to be born here, so what do I have to be proud of? I mean, it's not like I should get any credit for it, so how could I be *proud* to be an American?

I think people should be proud to be an American. I think we should be proud that we have troops who care about us and want to protect us. They would die for us and be away from families for a long time. In this country we have something other countries do not, freedom. We should be proud to have the freedom that we have here. Because of all this freedom, we have our own rights. I think whenever hard situations come around, we all stay by each other’s side and overcome any problems we may face. We are all lucky to be in the country of America.

Our country is not in the best state right now, but I'm proud to be an American. People have given their lives for this country and that is something that we should be proud of. Our country has gone through things like hurricane Katrina, 9/11. We as a country have come to help in any way that we could.

I am happy to live in the United States, but to be proud to be an American means more than you're happy to be here . . . it means that the country reflects your own values. Ever since our treatment of prisoners in camps such as Abu Garib (pardon my spelling) was documented I have not been proud to be an American. Since way back in the Revolutionary War the U.S. has had a rep for treating POWs with respect and a basic level of care. Under the Bush administration we did anything but that. We routinely tortured prisoners to get info out of them. The facts are well documented and easy to find on the Internet (see http://www.newyorker.com/archive/2005/02/14/050214fa_fact6 among many others). I consider torture to be unAmerican. It's something third-world countries do. Our president routinely condoned torture for several years. I am so happy he is no longer our president, but much harm has been done in our global standing.

I am and will always be proud to be an American. We are in a financial slump right now but, there are positive things going on if you look for them. People are being more careful about how they spend their money. (Something we should have been doing all along!) People are coming up with ways of saving money. (Making do with the things you have.) I know that there are things the our government does that I would find disturbing but, if you compare our country to many others, we look pretty darn good. I agree with the comment that if you aren't happy living in this country, you are free to leave. Instead of spending so much time trashing our country, take the time to show your pride in your home and community.

I dont know why people are complaining about being an American? We live in a country that gives us more freedoms then any other country in the world. Some countries dont even allow their women to show their hair, and they have to walk behind their husbands. I am proud to be an American and wouldnt want to live any where else in the world.

I think that a person living in America is so lucky to be in a country where you are quite literally able to anything you want as long as you are willing to go for it. American's should very proud to be called Americans, decpite that fact that the country is not in the best state right now, because things will get better because the country has been down before but we always pick ourselves back up.

I think no matter what you should always be proud to be a American. People have fought and died to make this country what it is today. Just because the U.S. might be facing some difficulties doenst me you should give up and disgrace your country. In the past we had some difficult times and got through them. Knowing what you believe and having your countries back while the flag flys high is what it means to be proud of your country.

im very proud to be an american. i like what america stands for freedom and the pursuit of happyness. i believe everyone can agree with that and see how its morely right. i just dont agree with every decision america has made like our war and our health care systoms. there are many things that america does better than anyone in the world, but at the same time i think we do some of the dumbest things too.

You should always be proud to be an American especially if you were born here. Even in bad times you should still have pride. Civilization as a whole in America has its ups and downs. Everyone hates it in bad times but everyone loves it in great times. Being proud in America is an understatement. All Americans are oppertunists and will jump on the band wagon when ever they get the chance. I am proud of my country not because of the way it is today but because of the history behind its philosophy. I don't think its wrong for someone to say they are not proud of the country because its their free will to choose what they want.

I am blessed to be an American even though our country is going through a hard time right now. I am blessed to live in a country where we get lots of freedoms that people in other countries don't get to have.

To be an American is a great thing. We can live in a free country and enjoy the ability to do whatever we want to and for the most part not have to worry about the government telling us what to do. Even though out country is in a crisis, we still need to be supportive and try our best to get our country back to where we were before. Again, this is a free country if you don't like it then leave.

People like to drink in America, when you're drunk you don't want to think too much about what you should and shouldn't do. The population as a whole should spend more time outside with Nature. I would more so say I am grateful I'm an American..rather than proud. The trap of the typical American lifestyle is how can you be happy with what you have and not want more. I think there are a wondrous multitude of paths to walk in life and Our country's focus might be too aggressively expansive.. I'm convinced that to keep America the land of opportunity the people should create another holiday where everyone wears their favorite helmet and dances around a central fire to remind us we should love thy neighbor as we love thyself. and our country will grow as one.

I don't feel It's wrong for a person to not be proud to be an american but It is good to show that you are proud if you are! America has been through a lot good and bad, and sometimes you have to look at things in a different perspective. Personally I am proud to be an American because thats all i know how to be, and If I could be anything else i probably wouldn't be as good like a am as an American!
