Let It Fly?

Is the Confederate flag a symbol of racism?

Should Confederate states be allowed to fly their flag?

If so, how should it be displayed relative to the American flag?

If no, why not?

What do you think when you see a rebel flag hanging on a house or truck?
Thanks for your thoughts--

I really don't think the confederate flag is really considered racism. I think confederate states should be allowed to fly the flag anytime they want. I'll let you decide on how it should be displayed relative to the American flag. When I see a rebel flag hanging, I think hell yea and power to the flag. I also put it this way man, if it is sooo racist, then tell me why I saw the rapper Lil John with a rebel flag in the back ground of his music video.

I don't think the Confederate flag is a symbol of racism anymore than I think the Union flag is.There were many Northern states that were pro slavery during the civil war.The flag so many call the Conferate Flag was actually the battle flag of North Virginia aka Confederate battle flag, due to its popularity people just started calling it the Confederate flag. The flag in the picture was never officially recognized as the national flag of the Confederacy. That is another reason I dont think it's a symbol of racism.I think one reason people relate that flag to racism is that 500 or more extremist/racist groups have adopted that flag as their symbol of recognition.Southern states should be allowed to fly their state flags under the flag of The United States of America. When I see a Confederate Battle flag on a house or truck I think one of three things,That the people are rowdy rednecks that hold a romantic view of the past and they fly that flag because Hank jr does.I think they could be Confederate soldiers here through a time warp and are preparing for battle.Or maybe they just think its a cool flag like i do. I come from a small town, so whenever I think of the Confederate flag I do happen to think of racism. In my town full of hicks it was sometimes stapled on the ceilings of their loud trucks, and you didn't need to ask what for.

I think it really depends on what they are trying to say by the flag. A lot of the time unfortunately it is to symbolize racism. When I see it in people’s cars it does call forth a picture of hicks and/or rednecks and unfortunately they are usually very racist because they were raised that way. While the question of how high should it be raised -- According to http://www.ushistory.org/betsy/flagetiq.html “When flags of States, cities, or localities, or pennants of societies are flown on the same halyard with the flag of the United States, the latter should always be at the peak. When the flags are flown from adjacent staffs, the flag of the United States should be hoisted first and lowered last. No such flag or pennant may be placed above the flag of the United States or to the right of the flag of the United States (the viewer's left). When the flag is half-masted, both flags are half-masted, with the US flag at the mid-point and the other flag below.”

The confederate flag doesn't stand for racism. One of the reasons it was designed was to tell the north soldiers from the south. Some people may fly it to symbolize racism but that is not what it stands for. Tons of wanna-be country boys fly it just to be cool and know nothing about what it stands for. If your going flying it, know what it stands for not just to be a follower.

I personally do not believe that the confederate flag is a symbol of racism. There many people now that fly the confederate flag, but that doesnt not mean that they are completly racist. There are many people that have the flag just because they like the way it looks. There are many people from my home town and areas around there that either fly the flag or have some kind of display of it and some may not even know the history behind it or are not even racist at all. I believe that people should be allowed to fly the flag or display it any way they feel.

Everyone has their own view on about everything. If people think that the flag stands for racism then that is what there going to think. I have no idea what exactly the flag stands for, but i know that it is not for racism. As far as the flag hanging in a house or truck, I dont care what anyone does to there house or truck. It is their house and/or truck they should have the right to put whatever they want in there house or truck.bob burnard

No, it's not racist to fly a Confederate flag, but a LOT of racists fly Confederate flags. Does it make me a racist if I recognize that many racists like the Confed flag and I still choose to fly one? No--but I might have trouble explaining my choice to my Black friends. I mean, it's not like I was ever a southern Rebel or a member of any southern or confederate alliance, so why WOULD I choose to fly their flag? Who am I trying to support exactly? I think these would be legit questions for my Black friends to ask me if I chose to fly the Confed flag.

I dont think the rebel flag is considered racist. I feel if someone whats to fly the flag they should be allowed to do so, however when it comes to displaying it with the American flag flag it should be flown below it in a sign of respect. The confederates lost and their flag shouldnt stand as tall as the American flag.

i think that the confederates lost the war. so i think that people need to give it up and accept the american flag as their only flag. there are no confederates any more, thats the problem with this country its to divided. i think people intend the confederate flag to be a mark of racim. and it needs to stop. i think theres nothing wrong with having the flag but i dont think it should be used in the way some people use it. it should be a historical marker and thats it

The Confederates may have lost the war, but the flag is still a symbol of unity and passion. True racism has lost its meaning over the years, so I do not see the Confederate flag as being symbolic of racism. The Confederate flag was originally used as a symbol of a nation that separated itself from the United States. The colors are still there, the stars are still there. The only difference between the Confederate flag and the United States flad is that the Confederates have bars and not stripes. I come from an incredibly small German town, so I grew up without a concept of racism. However, college has instilled a sense of the word and its meanings. In my opinion, the stars and bars should be displayed at the discretion of the person(s) displaying it. I am a country girl and I have no problem with the stars and bars being flown. More power to those that have the nerve to do it!

I believe that people only see the confederate flag as racism. it is all in what people see it as. The only reason people see it that way is because the confederate states were racist. But then again you have to look at the people who fly the rebel flag and the majority of them are racist so in my opinion if you are going to be racist keep it to yourself why do you have to fly a flag that you know people conceive as racism.

How can a flag stand for racism? Flying the confederate flag is a freedom of speech, so anyone should be able to fly it. But it should never be flown above the USA flag.

The first thing that comes to mind when i think of the confederate flad is racism. though I do believe in the freedom of speech. If the Neo-Nazi's can have their swastica and it can be legal then the southern states can have their confederate flag. However, becuase the north won the Civil War it is not the American Flag and should be flown below the American Flag ALWAYS!!! with no exceptions.

No, I do not think that it is. It is a proud family doing, more than likely, what their family has done for many generations. So yes, I think that conferate states should be allowed to fly their flags. As long as it is flown below the United States flag, and they are both displayed at the same time.

I dont think the confederate flag is a racist symbol. If someone wants to display the confederate flag then i think it should be desplayed like the state flags. It should be lower then the National flag. We have the freedom in this country to express what we want to. i know that the confederacy didnt go to war with the union because of slavery anyways. I dont think that the flag has turned into a racist symbol.

rasism is not something that you can avoid no mater where you are and who you are with there will be rasicm. Like last nigh ton cnn they were talking about all the black people jokes since the president is. There was a black gentlmen they interviewed was laughing at the jokes that he got via text message. but in some way or form rasicms is everywhere. so if someone wants to fly the flag then lets them but i fly the flag. it means your proud of the south not slavery.
