Layoffs and plant closings both lead to not just families loss of income, but also to marriage problems and the children are effected in a big way. Sometimes the children aren't even aware of the family problems until the family losses their house and everything else they own. This also has a great effect on all the cummunities where the layoffs or closing occur. It has a domino effect, when people lose their main source of income they don't have the money they used to spend in the local stores. Then the businesses have trouble making ends meet and they fail also. Yes, I'm scared of how the current economy is. With the cost of energy driving up everything, it's starting to become a problem making ends meet. I think we will bouce back, but it won't be until they start controlling both the cost of energy and the cost of healthcare.

I know someone who worked for Motorola for years. Motorola outsourced to China so that they could pay workers lee, and my friend lost his job. It not only affected him ad his family, but the whole community because it was the only major company in the area. Many people in the community lost their jobs because of this and other businesses in the area went bankrupt because no one had any money to go out to eat or buy anything that wasn't an absolute necessity. It affect our whole society in these ways. Unemployment rates are going up and the government is running out of money to give everyone it.

I think the economy is on a downward spiral and I do not see it slowing down. I am one of the people affected by this. The company I worked at for 14 years closed their doors last year. My husband and I both worked there. It has been been very stressful. I have had to return to school because there are just no jobs out there in my pay scale I can enter without a degree. My husband has had to carry the finical burden. It has put a huge strain on our marriage. It has changed every aspect of our lives and our children's because we have to change our spending habits.

I think it does affect the family as much as the person being laid off. I know when my dad's print shops have gone under, we were always had the fear of moving. Dad really had to get out there to find another shop that did offset printing. I guess if your shop/plant is losing money from a lot of paychecks to pay, and not a lot of business coming in, you have to close. If one big plant shut down (i.e Kraft) a lot of jobs would be lost and a lot of people would lose their job. Where would these people go? They would have to move somewhere else. Meaning, a lot of houses not being owned, apartments up for grabs, and then land lords would lose money. It is a big chain of bad. I think that we need bosses to learn how to run businesses. Then nothing would go bad.

I think that more people are affected than just the workers. The familys of the workers are affected in a large way too. There is so much more than just a person getting laid off or fired due to lack of work in this situation now. I personally have been affected with this, I work construction and have been for the past few years. With being in the union it has been hard. That is why they call it workin in the trades, because at sometimes work isnt hard to find at all, but with the economy going down hill it makes it hard to find work. So at times when there is work that is why you make very good money but then when the economy gets slow and business slows down as well you suffer. You go from making good money down to not making anything. The economy has also gone from good to bad, i mean we bounce back from the great depression so i think that there is a chance for the economy to slowy get better, but certain prices will never be as good as they once were for example gas prices. The economy going down hill especially during an on going war is something that would be expected especially with the length of this war. I think that the economy will get better and there will be steady work once again.

These events all affect communities in negative ways and the effects can be very broad depending on the community. Closings and layoffs directly impact employees, who are now jobless and their families who they provide for, but they can also affect the entire economy of the area. Smaller communities can be absolutely devastated by a major plant closing because it is their major source of income and is their whole economic lifeblood. Like in the movie Tommy Boy, the town revolved around Callahan Auto Parts, and if the company closed down, most of the town would be unemployed.

I don't personally know anyone who has been affected in this way, but I hear stories all the time and understand that the economy is bad right now. It's hard for a lot for a lot of people to find work in what they studied in or if they lose work in their field, and many have to settle for lower-paying jobs that are more blue-collar just to get by. I am scared by the current econonomic situation and hope that it will bounce back soon, but think it'll take a few years. The oil prices are usually a good indication and they're not stabilizing at all. It'll be a while and it's hard now, but good times will come back in 3-5 years.

Mass layoffs, plant closing, and bankrupcies all lead to community problems, as well as family problems. Small rural communities usually live off of the plants or factories in their area. Once these close, most of the surrounding area is layed off and broke. The whole community suffers once factories close. ALso home life gets very stressfull. Marriages end, banrupcies in the homes are usually filed to, unless the other spouse has a well paying job. Stress levels increase dramatically. A close family friend of ours worked at a factory near our town. The factory closed beause it was bought out. Now they are struggling a lot just to put food on the table. That factory was their life, and now it is gone.
I am very concerned about our economy right now. The dollar just keeps weakining and it is only going to get worse. I hope that we bounce back soon or else who knows what could happen.

Employees may have rights under WARN(Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification Act.)WARN protects workers, their families, and communities by requiring employers to provide notification 60 calendar days in advance of plant closings and mass layoffs. Advance notice gives family time to adjust the loss of work and time for them to find a new job. I do not know anyone that has lost their job because of layoff or plant closing. I can't imagine what they go through not knowing how they are going to pay for their bills. I am not scared, I just hope it wouldn't ever happen to me or someone close to me. I would feel horrible for someone to lose their job, when losing their job they could lose their home and everything else they own.

Job issues will always be an issue in our nation's society, due to companies downsizing, closing, or other various reasons. They put a bind on many societies due to the lack of jobs and families who need work cannot find it. When a company downsizes, closes, or gets rid of employees for whatever reason, their production will almost inevitably decrease as well, so their profits will more than likely decrease as well. When a company decreases in size, in many cases, that means that the economy is struggling for some reason and that a change must be made to compensate for this. Im not scared at the current state because I have 4-5 years before i begin looking for a career to pursue, so I think that the economy will recover to at least a certain extent by that point. On the other hand, it is scary to see the costs of everything increase while you rarely see an increase in pay, which is very frustrating and makes getting along more difficult.

I think layoffs do lead to people being poor and homeless, I dont see a reason ever for a layoff with all this money that we waste in america. The country should be making it where this cant happen. It shouldnt be any reason that everyone in america doesnt have a job unless they just dont want a job.

layoffs effects everyone, families, marriage, and sometimes friendship. My mother was got layed off of her job and that effected our house hold. My little bother was just a baby when this happened,so he was not even aware of what was going on. My mother only had the money that she was saving for a rainy day.we had to use the money only for the important things. These layoffs really effected our family, most of the money had to go to bills and food to eat.We lost our healthcare so we really didn't have money to go to the doctor.layoffs effect everyone.

When a lot of people are let go from a job it doesn't just affect the person who was let go- it effects everyone who is involved in a relationship with that person. Money is the biggest cause of stress in our society today, and once it is taken away, there is no telling what some people will do in order to get on top once more. Also- the number one reason for divorce in the united states is because of money problems. When a lot of people are let go it affects an entire community- it's very hard when you think something is set in stone and is reliable and then it is taken away from you with no warning.

I think mass layoffs affect are a really big inconveinence that are just part of life. From products being produced to a money issue for a lot of families around the world. I think you have to move on quickly and overcome the adversity.
