Every
year millions of dogs, puppies, cats and kittens are euthanized simply
because there is no home for them. Every hour in the U.S., more than
2,000 dogs and 3,500 cats are born, compared to 415 humans. Many of
these animals are euthanized. It is estimated that at least
61% of dogs and 75% of cats in shelters will be euthanized. Most of
these ill-fated pets are consequences of unplanned litters and bad breeders.
Should there be laws about getting your pets spayed or neutered? Should there be laws or regulations for breeding dogs and cats? For instance, should all pet breeders be required to earn AKC (American Kennel Club) certification in order to get a special breeders' license? Should pet owners be required by law to get their pet spayed/neutered before their pet reaches a certain age?
Any other thoughts on how to avoid the mass euthanization of hundreds of thousands of dogs and cats each year?

Euthanizing pets is kind of the same thing as to give a death sentence to a person. We have no right to kill cats and dogs. I don’t have much to say about how to deal with euthanizing pets. All I can say is that limit the breeding of cats and dogs. I am sorry I don’t really know much to response for this kind of topic.

No one wants to deal with a freakishly large population of cats and dogs. When trying to control the population of certain species,spaying and neutering , should be left up to the professionals only. Truthfully I feel that there should be higher qualifications to breed any animal rather than a simple certification. I also believe that pet owners should be required by law to have their pets spayed or neutered. With such an abundance of animals it takes responsible animals lovers to make this into a controlled situation that has every potential to go wrong.
There may actually need to be laws about getting your pet spayed or neutered. The way I see it is, now a days it’s hard enough to support for a child, let alone a pet. My family has had pets, and they’ve grown old to die. But yes there are many pets being born day to day. But why should we feel shamed because we don’t want to have a pet at this very moment. Yes, I think that once a pet gets to a certain age, the owner’s should be able to determine whether spay or neutering is a good idea or not. Maybe once an animal gets to an animal shelter, they should be neutered or spayed.

I really do not like cats or dogs, however,the population is growing. I do think that the animals should be spayed or neutered before a certain age to have some type of control. There are people that mistreat these animals, and there are too many of them going to animal shelters.

I think there should be a certain time in a dog or cats life, that they should be neutered or sprayed. Just like the legal age for sex in the U.S. is 17 to 18 years of age, there should be an age for animals to stop having sex by getting neutered. The owners of animals that are going to have a litter of dogs or cats should be able to take the responsibility for the litter produced. If the litter cannot be taken care of, there are plenty of animal shelters where they can go.

You have a good point John, and so does everyone else, but when they do send them to the shelters, they then get euthanized due to the fact that the shelters get packed and can't/don't want to take care of the animals. It's pretty sad that they can take an animal's life just because they supposedly don't have the means to take care of it. To me, that's basically like killing children that are given up for adoption, just because the adoption center doesn't have the means necessary to care for any more children and don't have any more room for more children to come in.

Yes, I believe that breeders should have to get a certificate to prove that they are knowledgeable in the certain breeds that they are caring for and breeding. It also shows that they are serious about giving animals to other people and let the consumer know that they (the breeder) is not just doing it for the money. Also, I hate to see so many sweet animals euthanized because those same animals could give people lots of love and friendship. However, I feel that people should not be forced to neuter or spay their pets if they want to breed them legally and have a license to do so. Otherwise they’d have to spay and neuter them because there are too many animals in America being euthanized and when you think about it, how many of us have adopted from a shelter? I have, and when I think about it, I consider the fact that it could have been my dog Squeaky on that cold metal table, if I had not adopted her so many years ago.

If I wanted a pet, then I will get one. I do not want a random cat or dog running around in my yard. Those animals will be put down, unless there is a way to prevent such a large number of stray animals from running around wild. Oh wait, there is—we can euthanize them. If people think it is too tragic, then maybe we should create a park/zoo where all strays are taken and left there to live by theirselves.

They do need to have laws regarding breeding and spay/neuter. Even these laws need to be stricter. The USDA regulates puppy mills but most are horrific and the numbers are so large that it is nearly impossible to properly regulate them all.
When it comes to spaying and neutering I can only shar the story of little Brigitte who was saved by Villalobos Resuce Center and Tia Torres.
"Only a few days old, and this innocent little girl now named Brigitte (as in in Bardot), was almost dead before she got to take her first breath. It was just days ago, that a good samaritan brought us the newborn pup in a box. He had taken her away from some neighborhood kids who were running around the streets and showing her off as if she were some prize. In addition, she had a severely injured front paw that required immediate medical attention. We thanked the kind man and Bridget was put into a foster situation along with vet care. Within a couple of hours, the good samaritan returned but this time he had a woman with him. She jumped out of the car "screaming and hollering". Honestly, it was such a Jerry Springer moment that I couldn't understand most of what she was saying. Her story didn't match up as she claimed to "love her puppy" and "she had no f'n idea how those damn kids got her puppy". She began to hit the man/good samaritan, blaming him for everything and that's when it was apparent that she had other plans for this pup. When I refused to return the puppy to her, that's when the truth came out. She physically came after me, only to be dragged away by the "good samaritan" as she yelled..." I don't give an "F" about that puppy. I got 6 more at home that I can sell!!!". And they left. Sadly, word came back to us that the woman was seen selling the puppies from a box in front of a store just this past weekend. Though we don't hold much hope for these defenseless little ones, we can only thank the higher powers that they were watching out for Bridget. Though she won't be ready for quite awhile for adoption, you can follow her life each day as she grows into a little miracle. Each day we will post photos and video of the tiniest intake that Villalobos has ever taken in. This is one very very special teeny tiny little gem. I heard these disturbing statistics when I took classes in Animal Science and Companion Animals. We visited the Humane Society and were introduced to the harsh reality of what happens to most animals in shelters. Clay from the Humane Society explained his job in which he investigates animal abuse. He shared information and a slide show that highlighted the horrendous abuse that some animals experience by their so-called owners. Animals are neglected and tortured. They are treated as if they are less than a true life form. We had a neighbor who had once been a reputable cat breeder. I’m guessing she developed dementia, because one day some investigators arrived and found 63 cats in her home. They were not receiving proper care, and some were even dead. This is what can happen when breeding goes awry. I believe there is the need for some level of regulation. If people want to breed animals, they should have to follow some guidelines and be certified. Others should have their pets spayed or neutered. I hate to have to go to the extreme of putting these regulations in place, but they seem to be needed to prevent such atrocities from happening. I am also in support of people donating more time and money to animal shelters.

Just recently I have been searching for a new apartment for the upcoming school year, and I have found that it is very hard to find a place to live that allows dogs as well. There are all sorts of rules and regulations, however, for those buildings that do allow pets to live in them. There are size limits, weight limits, breed regulations, and they even make you have your pet neutered or sprayed in order to live there. So, in some situations, there are some rules regarding pets. I think if people own that pet, though, others should not be able to tell that owner how to raise their animal. However, it would be smart to spray and neuter animals in shelters to reduce the population. I don’t think all pet breeders should have to be AKC certified because that would make each animal ridiculously expensive, and that would make getting pets harder for a lot of people. Let’s face it, nobody really wants to pay 1,000 dollars for a dog.

Sometimes euthanizing a pet is for the best, but nonetheless, it isn't something that you should resort to in a lot of the situations they use. Overpopulation might be a problem, but if we dealt with humans the way we do with animals, our overpopulation wouldn't be bad either. It's a matter of opinion and if other people view animals the same as those that believe we deserve the same care.

I hate the commercials that show the animals at the shelter and have Sheryl Crow music playing in the background. That being said how to control the pet population is a complicated issues. I think that it is a good idea to have laws requiring breeders to get certification, as well as laws requiring people to have their pets neutered by a certain age. However, even if all these laws would be passed they would be nearly impossible to enforce.

It breaks my heart when animals are euthinized for no reason other than overpopulation but I do believe it's necessary. We can't have hudreds or cats and dogs roaming around everywhere. I think there should be regulations about spaying and neutering pets that should be applied when the cat or dog is adopting. Of course when you take in strays this wouldn't work but a lot of people adopt so that would help. If you aren't planning on having puppies and kittens, you should be forced to fix your pet. Eventually, the population will be under control enough that these poor animals won't have to die.

Due to the fact that the ultimate thing that we need to avoid is the killing animals that do not have a home, stricter laws and regulations with neutering and breeding licenses may be required. While I don't personally agree with this, it is much better than the alternative, which is packed shelters and killing animals that cannot fit into them.

I feel that there should be some way of regulating the overwhelming epidemic of pets. I know that they shouldn’t kill the pet but we as Americans have got to do better at the rate that we breed these pets, and as a matter of fact most states have a law that says if you do not own an ask certification you are not allowed to breed or sell any animal. Having you pets spayed or neutered is also a way of stopping your pets from urinating in your home if you have that problem.
