Own a gun?

Where do you stand when it comes to owning a gun? Should people be able to own guns? Should we follow the 2nd amendment? How much protection is too much protection? Does owning a gun lead to more or less violence? Many states now have "concealed carry" laws that enable anyone without a criminal record to carry a gun as long as no one can see it . . . do you think Illinois should pass this law? Why or why not? Other states have laws where you can carry a gun in plain sight. Is that better than concealing it?

I feel that owning a gun should only be available to very few people in very few circumstances. for example a farmer out in the middle of nowhere miles away from protective services should be able to own a gun to protect his own life, a new yorker 10 blocks away from NYCPD not so much. now if you know you've had deadly criminal encounters then you should go get approved by your local safety advisory. but regular households should not be able to carry them you never know what could happen a life is a life.

I'm against all use of guns and wish no one owned them but collectors. I think they do way more harm than good, both on a mass scale (wars) and much smaller ones (homes). That said, I would like to be able to say that NO ONE should OWN guns. Maybe cops can use them on duty but have to return them when their shift ends. Unfortunately, the way the world, I think we have to be okay with people owning guns because if we made it illegal to own one only the criminals would have them, which does give them a big advantage. So, we should all be able to own guns, and the smart people will keep them away from their kids and not use them when they are drunk, and the dumb people will continue to express themselves with their weapons rather than their words and leave their handguns on the kitchen table for their kids to find and fire just for fun.

Guns clearly make for more violence, but some of that violence is aimed at violent people who will continue to be violent unless we match them on their own terms, with their own weapons.

I think if people are going to carry guns, they should not be concealed. If a potential robber sees you with a gun, he'll choose another target, and the gun the would-be victim is wearing won't ever have to be discharged.

What is the second amendment. I always forget that. Is it the right to bear arms (own guns) or the right to form a militia if need be?

This is a big thing nowadays, owning a gun. There are some people who should be a loud to own a gun and others not so much. I think if you are out in the country and do hunting that is ok. I believe you should have to have your license before owning one in the first place and then once you own it hide it somewhere that only you know where it is. I don’t think it is that bad to own a gun if you know how to use it correctly. Especially if you have kids any age, it should definitely be kept high enough away out of their reach to where they cant touch it. People have guns to protect themselves, hunt animals, etc. If you really have no point in owning one then why pay to get a license for one. I don’t think people should be a loud to just go and carry them around anywhere they are either. That could really cause danger. If you are convicted of a felony I don’t think you should ever be aloud to own a gun. I don’t think owing a gun is a terrible thing as long as you are responsible and keep if out of reach of little ones.

I think that there are only certain people that should be able to own a gun. I think that people that are from the city or are from town should not be able to have a gun because they have the police in town and they can take the matter in to their hands. There has been a lot of violence that involves the use of guns. Many people think that guns are just toys and you can just have them for whatever and use them when you like. Well this is where I think that people should not be able to have them. I think that if you live in the middle of know were then you should be able to at least have some kind of protection so that you are safe. I think that Illinois should pass the law for concealed carry under one circumstance you should have a clean record and you should only have one if you live outside the city limits or in the country because then you would be using it basically for self-defense on you land if someone tries to hurt you or trust passes on you land.

I think owning a gun should be allowed to anyone that wants one. Just because people are stupid does not mean that it should affect the chances of others to own or carry a gun. People that live in the country need to own a gun because you have coyotes that want to attack your animals and you have to make sure that your animals are protected because that is what we live on. I think that a gun should be allowed anywhere because you always hear these terrible stories about people getting shot because they could not defend themselves. When you are in your house, you have to be able to protect your family and when you go hunting what is the point of hunting without a gun?

I believe that only certain people should be able to own a gun. I think people from the city or from a town shouldn't be able to have a gun because theres more protection such as police in towns that can take the matter in to their hands. There is a lot of violence that involves the use of guns. Many people often think that guns are just toys and can just have them for whatever reason and use them when they feel like it. This is why I think that people should not be able to use them. I think that if you live in the country you should be able to at least have some kind of protection since it takes longer for police to arrive.

I don't have anything against other people owning guns, but I never would myself, because I'm against violence.
I think its ok for hunters and farmers to own guns...and I guess if someone feels that they need it to protect themselves then more power to them.
I think it should be illegal for ex murders to ever have acess to a gun as well as mentally unstable people. Actually ANYONE with a criminal record shouldnt be allowed to carry a gun. I do not think illinois should pass that law because that could potentially put everyone in danger.
I dont think anyone should have the right to carry a gun in public unless your a police officer.

I've been brought up around guns and I feel safer knowing that I have a way to protect myself if i need to. I dont think that everyone ever should own a gun, bad things could become of that but thats why i think the state hasa good system right now. I have a FOID card and so that means the state approves of me owning a gun...THE STATE approves. As long as people have foid cards i think that they should be fine. the state goes through that persons history and if they find something that shows them that you are not worthy of owning a gun then they will not give you clearance to own one.
I think that it is important for people to learn how to use guns too. Just in case. I would personally never shoot a living thing, but if it was to protect my life i would just to protect myself. Its just something i don't want to think about but in self defense how do you think a person would react? I dunno. But i think that people would feel a lot safer knowing that they can carry a gun to protect themselves... because they know that they can protect themselves.
I dont really know if illinois should pass this law. Basically im used to the way things are now and i dont know what would happen if the law was passed. i hope for the best but with guns involved its hard to tell. Theres always a person out there that will scew something up becasue theyre crazy. So it may be a good idea but it may not too. Who knows.

I think anyone should be able to own a gun if it used in the right way for protection. I think owning a gun is a good thing especially to protect you or your family if someone has broken in and is trying to hurt you. But, owning a gun can lead to violence also like if you were not able to own guns people that do not know how to use them in the right circumstances it would not create as much crime. Also 49 out 50 states have passed this concealed carry. But, you should not be able to just carry a gun in plain sight. I think being able to have a gun in your home is defiantly fine and most people have guns in there home at least where i am from because I live in the country and a small town where people hunt a lot. I defiantly agree that Illinois should pass this law.

I actually feel as though this is a good topic. Since I feel as though we really don't have means of protecting ourselves then why not have the right to carry? I mean if you shoot someone under any means but defense your a murderer so those laws should apply however I feel as though maybe its a decent idea to let people carry a gun because it may stop alot of crimes if criminals think they may get shot in the process.

Yes I believe that people should have the right to own a gun. However I strongly also believe that there need to be stricter requirements in order to own a gun. I don’t think owning a gun would affect the violent rate; those who are violent are going to be violent with or without a gun and the same for those who are not violent. I believe that people should not be allowed to carry guns on them at all. What are you really going to use it for, rob a bank, or shoot someone? I mean really there is no need for people to carry a gun in public. I also understand that people hunt, however they should still not have a gun on them it should be unloaded and in its gun case in their car. Have a gun in your home I completely understand, if someone breaks in and you need to protect yourself.

I think that owing a gun should only available to certain people under certain circumstances. If you live out in the middle of now where then yes you should be able to own one. But I don’t think if you live in town that you should be able to carry a gun. I personally think that guns cause more problems than good. If the guns on you and you get into a bar fight or any fight for that matter then you have a better chance of pulling out that gun and using it, rather than fighting the old fashion why and with your fist. If Illinois would happen to pass a law then I think you should be able to carry one only if you have a clean record. But then again I have been raised where guns were in the house and I did feel a little safer but not much. But if it was up to me I wouldn’t pass this law. I’m used to how things are now and if their working for our state then why change them.

Being someone that owns a gun makes you feel like your protected if you need it. I've been around guns in my life and i would like to get my license to carry a gun and to fire it. i think that people should have guns if they think the need them as hunting or protecting themselves. People that have violence in their life will use the gun for violence. Others that enjoy shooting aren't going to want to go start violence unless they thought they need to be protected. i do believe that Illinois should pass this law. I know this lady that lives in South Carolina and she lives in the ghetto she said she's afraid for there life and that's the only place they can afford right now. Well she carry's a glock in purse at all times and is deadly(shes really good) with it. But she said without that she wouldn't feel safe. I don't blame her and if we had a law like that i think others would feel better for their lives. also you never know when this world will go to shit and what if you got to defend yourself people that were against the law and don't have guns are kind of out of luck. But i do think that guns should be were you can carry them.

yes i think Illinois should pass that law i mean if an 18 year old can buy and own an assault rifle but can't buy or own a hand gun that makes on sense to me having a weapon on you for protection is not a bad thing i do believe people shouldn't see it unless its in a holster and why are fully automatic's illegal up north but not down south i think anybody should be able to own any gun that they want the second amendment says we have the right to bare arms they specify on which one we can own J.Moody

A lot of people that I know own a gun and it’s for their own purposes. The world is a crazy place now. To certain people it’s either kill or be killed. There is no such thing as too much protection. A person has to protect themselves to the fullest. Any mean necessary. If that law was in Illinois there would be babies carrying guns. That law should not be passed anywhere if you ask me. The only person that should be able to carry a gun is the one who is liable to shoot.

i believe that people should own a gun for protection, unless you are only hunting. everyone should own there own gun, if they can take the class, and show that they can shoot one. i don't know if there is to much protection. owning a gun, could lead to more violence if the wrong person has a gun. there are becoming alot of killings especially in our own towns, so i do believe people should carrry concealed weapons, but then again, if they seen it maybe someone would try and rub you first, or maybe they just shot you before they even tired anything. so i could really go either way, and debate that for awhile.

In most situations these days, it is not safe for anyone to just own a gun. There are certain situations in which one should own a gun. In today's society any human can get a gun from anywhere, and I don't think it's safe. Only certain individuals should own a gun. For example like police, security guard and people who live in the middle of no where. I also believe if you live in a huge house by your self you should be able to own a gun. Why? Because you never know what could happen while your in that big house all alone. Owning a gun in 2011 is leading to more violence. Like I said before every and anyone has a gun in 2011 and before then. And no, I don't think Illinois should pass that gun law. Just because a person doesn't have criminal records don't mean that they are not capable of hurting someone. Also I'm not understanding why some states have laws where you can carry a gun in plain slight, that's just not safe to me and no it's not better than concealing it.

I am a gun owner and collector. I hunt and shoot for fun, i also will be getting my concealled carry permit as soon as illinois passes it. We will start with what every legal illinois gun owner has to go through to get a gun: foid card(fire arm owner identification card) every gun owner in illinois must have one. to get this you send in an aplication and a back ground check is done, if you pass you get your card. When you go buy a gun there is another back ground check through every data base the government has. it is a proven statistic that crime in states went down when concealled carry was passed. i think illinois should fallow suit. to get your concealled carry permit you will spend alot of money and have to take classes. i understand most people don't like guns or aren't comfortable around them and i feel its because you weren't brought up around guns. gun crimes are committed by people who either have the want to harm somebody or someone who is not properly trained on how to use and care for the gun. the only thing i would like to see is have everystate go to the foid card system and have a class that should be taken to get the foid card as well as a the background check.
