Lower the drinking age?

Should the drinking age be lowered from 21? If people can vote and join the military at 18, why do they have to wait until 21 to drink legally? Did raising the drinking age from 18 to 21 save lives? Do you think teen drinking is a serious problem? Why/why not? If you are over the age of 21, do you have reason to care about the drinking age? Do you think at 18 or 19 years old people are adult enough to debate the drinking age--or will they only see their side of it? Would lowering the legal drinking age make alcohol less of a big deal and less attractive to teens? For more to think about before you answer, go here: http://drinkingage.procon.org/

Thanks!

Honestly I don't really care if the drinking age is lowered. I myself rarely pick up a drink, but I know a lot of underage kids would love to be able to go out and get wasted at 18...not that they don't anyways. When I was a junior in high school my family housed a foreign exchange student from Belgium and the drinking age there is 16, but you can get away with it at 15..you can go to bars, clubs parties anything you want...however the driving age is 21. So I think that if the driving age were to be lowered then the driving age needs to be raised to prevent drunk driving..in Belgium most people ride buses so they don't have to worry about being drunk behind the wheel, which I think is very smart.

I believe that the drinking age should not be lowered. The reason that I am standing to this is kids under the age, their bodies are still growing an if they drink way to much alcohol then they are just more an likely to have health problems down the road. Also like Kristina said if they are going to lower the age of drinking then they need to rise the driving age. I can tell you first hand that this should be done if they ever do lower the drinking age, because I just had a best friend not even two weeks ago go to a party an got wasted. Well she thought that we would be awesome to drive home while she was intoxicated, it didn’t turn out how she planned. Ends up that she got in a car wreck and was not wearing her seat belt at the time and she got ejected out the seat, through the windshield. Luckily she has made it through it but she is still in the hospital still to this day, and she will not go one day without seeing the scares that were from going through the car wreck so that is why I don’t think that the drinking age should be lowered.

I don't think the drinking age should be lowered. When your 21 you are more responsible. I am 21 and im happy thats the drinking age. Even though you can purchase drinks at 18, 21 is just a better number in my book. Yes teen drinking is very bad, but its something that cant be stopped. If they lower the age of drinking it will be a major issue.

i believe that the drinking age should stay where its at. If it where to drop lower it would be 20yrs old,and the driving stay at 18yrs old to balance the maturity of the adult age. As Kristina and Cheyenne said, "even if there are kids drinking under the age don't make it okay for them to drive at the same time. Even though at the age of 18 being able to vote and fight for our country dose not mean you can waist your life away. more and more teens get out of control when drinking and driving as it is today so why change it to a lower age that would only cause more deaths than there are now .

Personally, I think it should be lowered to 18. My family has taught me to drink responsibly and i can say that I have a good relationship with my parents.if i go out drinking they want me to call them and honestly i would feel safer if they came to pick me up than some person driving me home. I'm not saying that every person like me with parents like mine should be able to drink, but I'm just saying that there would probably be less risk if the age is lowered because, hopefully, by the time that 18 year olds turn 21 i would hope that they have matured enough to handle the responsibility of drinking. I'm pretty sure a lot of teens have been drinking at least once so in my opinion I think why risk getting arrested? Lower the age to stop young arrests. In come cases though it could be a problem since some younger people find it "rebellious"? It just worries a lot of people that young people can be in danger if in public and drinking I guess... there are presentations that tell young adults to not drink and drive... which should be obvious... it can be dangerous, but some people still drive.
I do think that lowering the drinking age would make alcohol less of a deal and that it would let them drink at their own choice but i just hope that they would be careful.

I believe that the drinking age should stay the same. My major reasoning for this is that during your teen years, your brain is at a crucial stage in it development. The human brain doesn’t stop developing until a person is in their mid to late twenties. I believe that teen drinking is a problem because at my high school I would over hear several people saying that they were going to go and get drunk that night. Also I think that eighteen and nineteen year olds would not be able to debate this issue, they would only see it from their side. I am not saying that every teen would not be able to see the other side but I feel that the majority of them will only be able to see their view as the right one.

At the age I'm at I'm not a big drinker, it every once in a while i will pick one up. So to me the age for drinking really wouldn't matter. but to think this way when my mother was our ages they were aloud to go by alcohol at the age of 18. I asked her if there was really any wrecks and kids driving around. She replied that kids were responsible and would stay some were, also they didn't get so drunk they didn't know what was going on. now days kids are going out and not caring about their lives or others. So as this day and age i don't think they should lower the drinking age. maybe they can take up a different law such as in Wisconsin, if you are the age over 18 you are aloud to drink with your parents, but that's only if your with them. To me this is a good solution, some parents won't allow it and some will. it just shows that control over someone more responsible can make a better out come.

I don't think it has anything to do with the drinks. it has more to do about the drinker, if a responsible young adults gets intoxicated i think he will be just fine because regardless if you are drunk or not you are still you. i think the reason that it is at 21 is because the government thinks people get "responsible" at age 21, that's a damn lie i know some adults that act like 6 year old and its nothing fancy. people have been thought to be responsible, and if they are responsible drinkers they should be allowed to drink, that is that

I feel that it could be lowered to the age of 18. Anything lower would coincide when most teens are able to start driving, which I feel would equal more drunk driving. I that minors would not feel the need to drink as much, because they would not have to wait until they are 21, and could possibly learn to drink more responsibly. It would make it less appealing, knowing that they will be able to do it sooner than before. Many teens will be able to adjust better to when it comes to drinking and will be able to do this more responsibly.

My opinion is this, if you ask me it really doesn't matter if the drinking age is lowered or not. There are still going to be underage drinking going on. I say this because I know plenty underage teens that have friends that's 21 and older that could buy them drinks. As a matter of fact most bars are 18 and older or 19 and older and those teens seem to find them someone to purchase them a drink anyways. I who barely drink as much as I did when I first came to college would like for the drinking age to stay at 21 of age. Not to say I don't know mature underage drinkers, but I think it's best if it stays at 21.

You also have to think of it this way your mom is 50 something? this is a completely new and different generation. If the drinking age were to be lowered to let's say 18 and you were still allowed to drive there would be so many accidents...how many teens are going to just go sit somewhere at their friends house and get drunk?..not very many these days..and if you can drink and buy liquor at 18 you can go to the bars hence leading to drinking and driving. Kids are out of control..not all but a lot and we all know how many people are killed by drunk drivers...so in my opinion if you are going to give you have to take something away and you shouldn't be able to drive...however like i said I don't drink if i did it would be a glass of wine and thats all, but not all young teens are smart and i can see bad things coming from lowering the age because not all people like Sam are that mature and can handle their alcohol.

Since i am already 21 i honestly don't care about the drinking age. But i do feel if they lower it underage drinking will decrease. I partied and drank before i turned 21 like most 18-19 year old kids do but when i turned 21 i just didn't feel the need to drink as much. No that its legal it is no fun. I feel that this will happen to lots of teens if they lower the drinking age.

I don't feel like lowering the drinking age would be a good or bad idea. I mean I think anyone around our age group can say they know of atleast 10 people not 21 who drink so really I don't feel as though it's going to change things other than minors will buy there own alchol rather than pay a 21+ to get it for them.

I think it should be lowered. If you can vote and fight for your country and 18 you should be able to enjoy a drink at 18. I know people say that you are more mature at 21 and responsible.. then why are people in their upper 20s and 30s and higher getting DUIs? Yes it does have to do with maturity but at what age are you full mature? My family has told me to drink responsibly and I do. If I go out drinking and need a ride I can call my mom or dad for a ride. I’m not saying there wouldn’t be more of a risk at a younger age I just hate when people pull the maturity card. I think that it would lower the arrest rate of underage drinking because more kids are getting caught drinking at a younger age. Personally it doesn’t really matter what age you can drink because kids are still going to do it rather their 16 or 18. Because they’re going to rebel.

I'm kind of stuck in the middle I believe that lowering the drinking age wouldn't doing anything but cause more problems. There's already enough teens dying because of driving under the influence, and shooting because of kids being intoxicated at parties. But at the same time if your old enough to put your life on the line for the country and make important decisions about voting shouldn't you be able to drink at 18. I Think they should test it in certain states and take studies to see what happens because this is one of those things you wouldn't know how they will turn out until you try it.

i think that the drinking age should be 18. people don't want to wait until they turn 21 so that can get them liquor. there are a lot of young people out here in the world that loves to drink liquor. they don't wait a very long time to drink. young people have to pay older people to buy their liquor for them since the cant get it at 18 and they have to pay for the liquor to. the driving license is 16 why cant the drinking limit be 18 to buy liquor. drinking is very important to people that loves to drink thats why they should lower the drinking age.
