Stars or the real world

Is it right that every time we turn on the television six channels are reporting Lindsey Lohan going to jail but the soldiers who die overseas go unnoticed by the general population? Why is it that American society is so obsessed with what their favorite celebrity is doing instead of what's happening in the world? Do you see this as a problem?

I'm afraid the answer is simple: Americans are not very bright. We have earned our current reputation worldwide over many decades of acting quickly and decisively without proper consideration beforehand. A culture's sense of humor always gives them away--look at the kinds of things we think are funny--bathroom humor, slapstick--and you can see right there that we're simple, dim people next to most Europeans, who have a much more sophisticated sense of humor with a particular appreciation for understatement.

The people of our country re-elected George W. Bush. That sort of speaks for itself about our level of intelligence.

It's embarrassing to be associated with the yahoos that make up 70% of our country, but we're only going to get more and more stupid.

I don't think it's right that we give celebrities more news coverage than our soldiers fighting for our country. However, we are the ones making these types of people famous reading, watching, and buying these magazines. We wonder this all the time, but we are guilty for watching reading letting our mind get consumed with this drama. Which brings me to another point, most peoples lives are filled with drama and they feed off of this type of news.

As for the soldiers fighting for our country, I believe the government has some control over what is publicized. They don't want to put all the bad stuff out there, fearing it will cause more protests and controversy. They do have many stations that give remembrance to the soldiers who have died in war. I think this very honorable.

I believe that the media is more focused on celebrities when they do wrong because they are suppose to hold this standard because they are celebrities and so much pressure is put on them like they can't do no wrong but what the media forgets is that they are human just like us. They are just on television and their salaries may be way bigger than our's but at the end of the day we are all human. It is a problem because we live in this fantasy world and we as Americans are not looking at the bigger picture, them people could care less about them soldiers in Iraq, the media is more worried about whats going to be popular on television and whats going to get them more air time on television which is so sad. Americans do anything for money and money talks.

I agree with Melissa and Sierra.I think that the lives of celebrities are being published because the people involved in the media know that people in our society today will "eat it up" because we thrive off of this kind of stuff.(Not me, personally)I think pre-teen girls really get sucked into it because they are at an age where their self esteem is at a low level and they need models and celebrities to look up to because they are "perfect" and they want to be just like them. Once they get sucked in at an early age its tough to get out. Celebrity shows and magazines are like a drug addiction. and once you are hooked it affects your maturity level when you are still reading/watching religiously in high school, college, and even as a parent! Personally, I think it is all trash and a waste of time. Its promoting: wealth, materialism, drug and alcohol abuse, and sex in so many different ways above everything and all else in terms of importance--including what is really important, like the real drama going on in the world that just gets swept under the rug.

There are so many soldiers who die that it's hard to notice all of them. Some people would rather hear about their favorite celebrities than hear that someone they don't know has died(I know I sound harsh but thats just what I think). I think that if they talked more about the soldiers in America rather than celebrities then maybe more people would be more interested in what is going on them instead of what is going on with celebrites.

yes i belive it is a problem every time i turn on the tv it seems there always talking about witch celeb was caught were or what sex scandel is happing. it is very wrong because we really do not know what is going on in our world. it is almost like they put that on tv so that we dont really know what is going on over seas which makes me mad because there are thosands of familys that have unaserd questions. it is a problem that is only getting worse and needs to be corrected

People like lindsey lohan should be role models and people look up to her. When she does the stupid stuff that she does of corse it will be on tv. Its not every day that we have cameras in Iraq we wont always be able to keep up with the war.

No its not right or fair that soldiers who died every day for this country go unnoticed as if there not ova there going through hell away from there families everyday while our general population have made it a priority to know what there favorite celebrity has been up to,but you have to come to realize that that's what our society has evolved into. money and celebrity are life source. americans are obsessed because they only see the glitz and glam and see the money that's being mad even if they are being seen in a negative light. i see this as a huge problem but honestly i feel like even if it got addressed people still wouldn't take it into consideration.

As a former military member, this does piss me off. The other thing that pisses me off is the way some people view the military. The men and women serving the country did not ask for the events that have unfolded to take place, but they did decide to make the sacrifices so that everyone can enjoy what is left of their freedom. If anyone wants to bash the military, I challenge them to put on the uniform and make the sacrifices, or shut their mouth.

As for the celebrities: To me this speaks volumes about where we are as a society. More people vote for "American Idol", "Dancing with the Stars" and whatever else stupid, glorified talent shows may exist, than do for our own president. People would rather get caught up in stupid petty bs than be informed about what is really going on before opening their mouths to complain.

Who cares what they do? If you have to watch TV, then watch intelligent TV. HD net has a great news program with Dan Rather if you want to see real news. I don't give a shit what happens to these people.

Try to do some good where you live and don't worry about these people. We are not there and they are not here. There is too much emphasis put on people who contribute to society in what,? movies? Who cares?

I want to do good here, where I live, I want to be a positive influence here.

James has got it right, Americans are stupid when it comes to the media. We spend too much time dreaming about these people when we cal all be little starts right where we live.

I agree with Hillary, I persoanlly would change the channel if something like the deaths of people over seas was on. Not because I dont care but because it doesnt seem real, which is sad. I think that our society does need to put more information about the things that are happening outside of the celebrities life. If I knew more about it I would pay attention and care a lot more.

Oh theres a lot of things wrong in this country. That being one of them. But you have to give the people what they want if your shows going to make any money. To change that you would have to change most everyones interests within our society.

There are a lot of people who do pay to much attention to celeberities, but in my case I know nothing of what any actor or actress is doing I am oblivious to that world, because it doesn't matter to me. It is the people's choice that stars are where they are at today and ahead of soldiers, and other important people. Yet if you are like me you do put soldiers first. I honestly never watch but maybe 3 hours of tv a week. There are only a few actors names I know. Yet I can name many more soldiers and veterans than I can famous people. So I think it is wrong that the majority places entertainer higher then freedom fighters.

I believe this is true. What our American Heros do should be more important than what celebrates are doing. Are they fighting for our freedom & gone from their families for months or years at a time. No they aren't.

this is defenitely a problem they have young kids wanting to be like these stars but they nothing about whats going on in the world. They know what their stars are doing, how they are spending their money, who they are dating and the whole line but if you ask them a question about the economy or anything else they have no clue because they didnt see it on tv.
