Violent Crimes in Schools? Is there any way to prevent this violence from happening? What are some ways to stop this? Do the schools need to have better Security? Are the parents to blame? Are weapons too easy to get a hold of?

I will be the first to admit that Villa Grove doesn't have a whole lot of extreme violence, but I still feel that there is always a way to prevent the violence in the hallways. This is just a personal feeling, but anytime I see something on the t.v. about a hate crime or violent attack in a school I think that there must have been a clue, a sign, SOMETHING! I am a babysitter, and I cant tell you how many times I walk into a house, and a gun case is locked with the keys inside of the key whole. Seriously people... What good does that do??????? That calls for a big fat DUHHHH!!! Well in order to answer your question hun, yes weapons are way to easily accesible for people of all ages. Guns save Lifes, maybe, But they also take them away.

I don't know if violence in schools is preventable, but there's got to be a way to decrease the frequency of it. Students should be able to feel safe in school. Yes, I think parents get a lot of the blame for the violence. People raised in abusive or neglectful homes are more likely to act violently. The school should be able to help with this epidemic, too. Students who commit violent crimes are troubled emotionally and mentally; school psychiatrists are a must. Recognizing the signs that a student is troubled and capable of acting violently is key in preventing these crimes. These students just need help from someone, and I think they are often neglected.
It's nearly impossible to prevent violence, because we cannot read people's minds! The only way to 100% prevent violence is to be constantly going through the students' bedrooms, house, lockers, bookbags. Guns are very easy to get to, knifes are even easier! Just grab the butcher knife from the kitchen...Increasing security in schools can definitely help, but it does not raise the "protection rate" to 100%; maybe 95%, or 99.999%, but not completely 100%.
There are many excuses people come up with to explain what causes school violence. Some blame the media, concluding that the violent programing that saturates T.V. and movies has somehow brainwashed today's youth. If that is the case, why aren't there thousands of violent acts in schools every year? If the violence in the media only affected the few dozen individuals that commited acts of violence in the past few years then the media is not the great problem everyone wants it to be.
The same can be said for the accesablity of weapons. Yes, weapons can be easy to obtain, but then why does'nt every student capable of getting one, almost all of them, bring it to school?
The fact is that the only thing to blame for this is the expectations society puts on our youth. A student that acts out in violence is one who sees no other path for thier life to take. All the pressures put on a fifteen year-old kid to get perfect grades, get into college, be socialy accepted by everyone, and essentially plan thier life before they get thier driver's license. These pressures push all most every youth in American to thier mental edge, and for a few it is too much. Because God forbid if someone is to do something wrong when thier young, society tells us thier is not fixing it.
It is this sentiment that drvies kids to violence and if society can not stop pilling on this unessesary pressure, then neither will the violence.

I don't think that you can really prevent crime from happening, but it can be reduced. Just paying attention to students and building a closer student-staff relationship could prevent many of the problems. If a student felt like they had someone to talk to about the problem, it could be addressed before it escalates. I don't think anyone is to blame. Humans are animals, animals have violent tendencies. Counselors can also help by talking to students about more than their class schedules. Other than that, I think having a school police officer or two would scare kids out of fighting.
It seems that a lot of the true violent crimes we hear about are linked with kids feeling disassociated and sometimes bullied by their peers. It is so sad to hear people being interviewed, talking about the terrible teasing- after the crime has been commited. Did anyone try to stop it, or are we so desensitized to rudeness in our schools that teachers pick their battles and let these children that are time bombs tick away? Fostering an environment were bullying is treated like the most serious offense instead of "kids being kids" could go a long way. It takes an incredible amout of work and follow up to stay consistent, and teachers need support staff that aren't always in their schools because the district dosen't see it as the priority that it is until there is a tragedy. Suddenly, there is money for lots of counselors.

I don't think there is any way to completely get rid of violent crimes in school. I think something has happened in society. Back when I went to school in the seventies, I can't ever remember hearing of a kid going into a school and killing ten people. It was probably easier to get a gun back then, where I'm from guns were a common thing in the house. I think that video games and television glorify violence and that's a lot of the problem. I guess schools could put metal detectors and security guards at all the entrances, but that would be expensive and we all know that the funding wouldn't be there for the schools. Not only that, there would probably be some group out there that would say that we were infringing on the children's rights. I don't think you can put all the blame on the parents, but I think a lot of parents aren't tune with their kids the way they should be. Maybe if they were, they would pick up on some signs and things would turn out different.
I think that there is violence in schools but not in all schools. I was raised in a mostly hispanic school, and yes there are gangs, and crime. I think are teachers and staff prevented it a lot though because they always stopped it before it would even happen. My schools were really strict and parents would always get involved. Some parents are to blame though because they let there kids do whatever they want. As far as weapons if you are raised around a father with guns then i think it would be really easy to get a hold of them but it would be the parents responsiblity to lock them up.
I don't beleive you can stop School violence completely because of the enormous rise in the population.I beleive the level can be brought down by more money being invested in after school activities and programs to enhance the awareness of students on ways to report any suspicious behavior without having their identities revealed.

There are ways to prevent violence in the schools. In the school I went to, they had the school security officer walk the halls and they had cameras in the halls. If weapons are an issue, then the schools should have medal detectors and baggage check. It is easy to gain access to guns, but when it is in the house the parents should put them in a gun safe or put a trigger lock on the guns.
